Pink Tutu Milan - Post #70 - Wednesday, 1996-10-09

Ciao, darling tutus! It's Emma, your favourite pink tutu-clad ballerina, signing in from Milan, the fashion capital of the world! Oh, I simply adore this city! It’s such a visual treat, with stunning architecture, vibrant streets, and a sheer abundance of fabulous fashion – exactly the kind of scene I like to slip into with my signature pink tutu!

Today’s adventures were extra special as we had a date with La Scala, the famous Milan opera house. Imagine a beautiful 18th-century building, the most magnificent marble foyer adorned with paintings and sculptures, and you get the feeling. Just breathtaking! I can’t quite describe it, the way the ornate details intertwine with the majesty of the stage. Truly an inspiration for any ballerina, with so much history and drama woven into its very walls. It's no wonder it’s renowned worldwide for its grand opera productions, stunning ballet performances, and world-class musicians. I felt the thrill just walking through its entrance!

And what a show we saw! The programme this evening was Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, and darling tutus, this ballet simply melted my heart. You know how much I adore a good romantic story, and this classic tale, a tale of forbidden love and tragedy, set to the most divine, evocative music, just filled me with a bittersweet, fluttery sensation. The principal ballerina, she was a dream – she danced with such power, grace, and elegance, and her white tutu just glistened under the stage lights! Honestly, her leaps and turns were nothing short of miraculous, like she was flying across the stage, all white and light against the darkness of the theatre. The entire production was just breathtaking – from the gorgeous set design to the exquisitely designed costumes, it all added to the spectacle. Oh, I just feel so lucky to experience these performances, all for a good cause, of course. You know I always have to use my gift of dancing to raise money for charity.

Speaking of which, I’m excited to announce that I will be performing at the Teatro Sociale di Como next week! This beautiful old theatre nestled in the charming lakeside city of Como promises to be a splendid setting for my show. And of course, I’ve chosen a new pink tutu just for this special occasion. We’ll be bringing the magic of ballet to life under the glistening Italian stars, which makes me even more excited about the whole adventure. After the performance, we are hoping to catch a few shows at the Festival delle Nazioni, the annual music and performing arts festival that is happening right now, in this region. It's an absolute haven for lovers of art, and there are shows happening everywhere you look - theatres, concert halls, open-air spaces, and even churches, some of them right on the shores of Lake Como! The perfect spot for a post-performance picnic or a bit of stargazing before tucking in for the night! Oh, this journey has become an absolute treasure trove for a little ballerina like me, and it’s only just getting started!

But enough about the upcoming events. Let’s backtrack to the lovely cobbled streets of Milan. After enjoying our delightful pre-ballet pasta lunch in a charming, family-run trattoria close to the theatre, we spent some time wandering the city, taking in all its beauty, and of course, soaking up the fashionable atmosphere. Did I mention that Milan is truly a shopper’s paradise? I swear, every boutique and department store here is more alluring than the next, each showcasing a delectable array of clothes and accessories designed to make any fashionista swoon.

As I was browsing through the beautiful Italian leather goods at a street stall, I realised it was the perfect chance to snag myself a new travel bag to keep my tutu safe when travelling. You know, the perfect ballet dancer has a chic pink tutu, a glamorous outfit, and a stylish bag! What's a girl to do with so many incredible things to discover? What can I say, sometimes shopping can be a form of art, wouldn't you say?

Naturally, I’ve already spotted a few stylish places I can't wait to revisit, from the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, this stunning shopping arcade with its ornate glass dome, to the designer boutiques lining Via Monte Napoleone, known as Milan’s 'Golden Square'. Oh, the sheer decadence, the creativity! The displays of elegant shoes and handbags, the mannequins sporting the latest trends... every corner was an explosion of colour and design!

After our shopping spree, we found a little trattoria serving traditional Italian cuisine and decided to take a break from the city bustle, sitting outdoors and enjoying some pasta and the view. I even treated myself to a slice of Tiramisu, you know I do love my sweet treats! And to wash it all down, we opted for a refreshing glass of Lambrusco – Italy just has such lovely flavours, and the Italians are so friendly and welcoming, it just makes everything even more charming. After all that indulging, we decided to take a ride on one of the classic red Milan trams to explore a different side of the city, heading for the Navigli canals. The ride was delightful, giving me the chance to enjoy the views from the comfort of a red and white tram, such a quintessential Italian experience. I must admit, it felt quite special, as though I’d stepped right into one of my favourite movies!

The Navigli canals are beautiful! It felt like we had stepped right out of a romantic painting! The canal system dates back to the 12th century, and walking along its edges felt like strolling through history, taking in the old architecture, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere, and watching the world go by, from trendy cafes and vintage stores to a floating cinema, you name it, Milan's got it. I even spotted a few ducks and swans serenading us with their sweet, quacking tunes. It was quite the treat.

With the afternoon drawing to a close, we decided to catch a tram back towards our hotel to get ready for a leisurely evening in. I opted for a cup of Earl Grey, to be enjoyed with a delicious slab of chocolate (don’t tell the dance instructor!) – I simply have to reward myself after such an incredible day! It's a lovely ritual I’ve enjoyed since moving to London – settling down for a calming moment at the end of the day with my favourite things. I feel like I’ve accomplished so much in the past week or so, and as the days blend together in my beautiful pink tutu, I’m truly savouring the moment. This adventure is a true delight!

Speaking of delightful things, I recently purchased a charming pair of shoes from a boutique tucked away in a cobblestoned street. I was immediately drawn to them as they have these beautiful bows, so dainty and delicate – they're perfect for my wardrobe, with the delicate embroidery and pearl detailing, perfect for a little pink tutu-loving ballerina! I can’t wait to style them for the Teatro Sociale di Como next week! I have a special, yet oh-so-simple, performance ensemble planned, just to allow my little pink tutu and shoes to be the focal point – it's all about letting the simplicity and elegance shine through, wouldn’t you agree? It’s what ballet is all about – elegance in motion, and I can't wait to grace the stage once again!

As I type these words, gazing at the flickering flame of the candle on my bedside table, I can’t help but feel grateful for this extraordinary journey. Milan, you are a true gem.

Until next week, darling tutus, keep dancing your hearts out and stay tuned for more exciting tales from this glamorous little ballerina’s adventures! Oh, and remember to sprinkle a little pink tutu magic in your lives every single day.

Stay glamorous!
Ciao!
