Pink Tutu Milan: #99 - Springing into Style in the City of Fashion (30th April, 1997)
Buongiorno, darling readers! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing ballerina, Emma, back with another Milan adventure straight from the heart of this glorious fashion city. Today, we're talking spring, we're talking sunshine, and we're talking... pink! Yes, you guessed it, even the Milanese are embracing the colour of joy and happiness this week, and you know how much I adore a bit of pink.
But before we get to the fashion side of things, let's talk ballet. Last night, I had the privilege of seeing the most exquisite performance at Teatro alla Scala. The dancers were incredible, so light on their feet, and the costumes – oh my! A flurry of colour, perfectly in sync with the story. The theatre itself is a magnificent, grand building, full of history and culture. Honestly, it felt like stepping back in time to a golden age of art. I had goosebumps all through the performance!
After the show, I wandered through the streets of Milan, captivated by the buzz of evening life. The city was alive with people, their laughter mingling with the sweet strains of street musicians. I felt a wave of happiness, truly immersed in the culture of this amazing city. Of course, I had to snag a delicious gelato, stracciatella, of course! Nothing quite beats a perfect gelato on a warm Milanese night.
Speaking of Milanese style, the city has been embracing springtime with open arms, the fashionistas showcasing all the latest trends. The colour palette is vibrant and cheerful, with lots of sunshine yellow and sky blue making appearances. And of course, no spring wardrobe is complete without a dash of... pink!
There's a playful sense of confidence in Milanese fashion this season, with bold colours, whimsical prints, and playful textures all finding their place. It feels fresh, exciting, and utterly invigorating. The other day, I even spotted a couple of ladies in their own pink tutus - just think of my joy! This city really has a passion for all things pretty.
Speaking of pink, I had to stop by my favourite boutique, "Casa delle Farfalle," a little treasure trove of all things feminine and romantic. You wouldn't believe the collection of beautiful pink clothes, bags, and even shoes! I left with a gorgeous blush pink scarf and a delightful set of pink butterfly earrings.
One of my favourite things to do in Milan is to wander through the beautiful parks and gardens. This morning, I enjoyed a lovely breakfast of cappuccino and brioche at a charming cafe tucked away in Parco Sempione. The birdsong and the sun-drenched trees created a truly relaxing atmosphere, the perfect start to a day filled with exploring.
It's incredible how Milan blends its grand architecture with bustling urban life and still manages to be effortlessly stylish. I absolutely love riding the tram around, watching the city flow by. It's the perfect way to observe the day-to-day life of Milan and soak in the sights and sounds of the city.
This week, I also took a day trip to the enchanting Lake Como. Picture a tranquil lake shimmering under a clear blue sky, surrounded by rolling hills dotted with elegant villas and picturesque villages. There's an almost magical charm to the region, a sense of quiet beauty and romance.
After a long day, there's nothing quite as luxurious as coming home to my little apartment, putting on a pair of comfy ballet slippers, and reading a good book. In this part of Milan, the neighbourhood is quite quaint, with little boutiques and cafes tucked into narrow cobbled streets. The local bakery makes the most delightful pastries, perfect for a pre-ballet snack.
Of course, no blog post from Milan is complete without mentioning the incredible food! Today, I'm planning a trip to a small, traditional trattoria for some authentic Milanese pasta, gnocchi al ragù, or perhaps the classic risoto alla Milanese, their signature saffron dish. The food in Milan is not just about flavours, but also about the artistry of plating and the passionate Italian atmosphere.
Now, here's a little fashion challenge for all of you! Try a dash of pink in your daily outfits this week, even just a pink scarf or a pair of pink earrings! It's an excellent way to brighten up a cloudy day and feel like a little ray of sunshine yourself. Who knows, maybe you'll inspire others to wear pink too! And remember, if you're feeling daring, I encourage you to embrace the tutu. There's something about twirling in a pink tutu that truly makes you feel empowered and graceful.
Until next Monday, when I'll be back with more adventures from Milan, ciao bella!

What’s on in Milan, April 30th, 1997:
Today, the Teatro alla Scala will feature "La Bohème," the beautiful Puccini opera that features stunning costumes and music. A night at the opera is always magical, and I cannot recommend this enough! For the artistic folk, a new exhibition is at the Palazzo Reale, “The Art of Photography,” with renowned artists, showing their beautiful photos of Milan. A true spectacle of colour, light and Milanese fashion, of course. The Milan Duomo is, as always, worth a visit, offering views of the city from its high, vaulted ceilings and architecture from gothic times. This Cathedral really gives a feel for this city's long history!
