Pink Tutu Milan: Post #181 - Wednesday 25th November 1998 - A City of Chic & Pointe Shoes!

Ciao from Milano, darling! This week, I've been positively swept off my feet by the vibrant energy and incredible fashion scene here in Italy. The air itself crackles with a joie de vivre, and even the pigeons seem to be strutting their stuff with an air of effortless confidence!

My latest adventure has led me to the fashion capital of the world, a city that oozes style and sophistication. Forget about just seeing the sights - in Milano, it's all about feeling them. It's the type of place that makes you want to twirl in your prettiest pink tutu just to soak up the atmosphere. Speaking of tutus, have you seen my new one? It's a symphony of delicate pink tulle with the most adorable little silver butterflies embroidered on the skirt. I simply must wear it to the ballet tonight - more on that later!

Let's rewind a bit. Getting here was a journey in itself. It began with a trip to London, a city always close to my heart, even if its tube system can be a bit of a headache. But I had to stop by my favourite pink boutique on Portobello Road for some inspiration - can't let my wardrobe lag behind the Milanese trendsetters!

The journey from London to Milano was a beautiful train ride across the English Channel and onto the picturesque Italian countryside. As we travelled further south, the scenery shifted from charming countryside to rugged mountains to the vibrant colours of the Italian landscape. The windows transformed into screens showcasing stunning scenes that seemed to change with each mile. I had a front-row seat for this artistic masterpiece - no pink tutu necessary (but oh, wouldn't it have looked divine against the rolling hills!).

When I arrived at the bustling Milano Centrale station, my senses were assaulted (in the best way!) with the energy and smells of the city. Imagine a symphony of Italian chatter, the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee, the scent of fresh pastries wafting from the bakeries, and even the distinctive smell of petrol from the endless line of sleek, sophisticated cars. All of this mixed with the sights of fashion-forward Milanese people, elegantly dressed in tailored suits and sleek, flowing garments, created a whirlwind of visual and olfactory delight. I was in heaven!

Milano Centrale, with its grand halls and elaborate décor, felt like a grand theatre welcoming me to the vibrant performance that is this magnificent city. The echoes of history mixed with the buzzing modern life gave it a unique character - like stepping into a historical film that had come to life!

After settling into my beautiful hotel - which was just the right amount of kitsch and elegance for me, think Parisian chic with a pink touch! - it was time for some serious exploring. You see, there's nothing quite like experiencing a city on foot. The pavement itself becomes your stage, with every corner revealing another stunning architectural masterpiece.

My first stop was the iconic Duomo. This gothic marvel with its intricate detail, breathtaking views, and iconic rooftop, is a sight that takes your breath away. I couldn't resist twirling under the archway of the cathedral for a little photo op. The grandeur of the Duomo is something else - it just makes you feel small, yet full of awe, all at the same time. And it goes without saying, the perfect spot for a selfie in my most spectacular pink tutu (picture coming soon!).

My next stop, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. I practically felt myself waltzing through the ornate, glass-covered arches as I was drawn towards the opulent shops and delectable treats. Each corner whispered promises of extravagance, with the finest craftsmanship and designers lining its aisles. The aroma of freshly baked pastries from a nearby pastry shop led me straight to its doors, where I indulged in the most decadent pistachio éclair I have ever tasted! A girl has to fuel her wanderlust, right?

Now, let’s talk about shopping! I would be remiss if I didn't share my Milanese fashion adventures. Stepping into the world of high-end boutiques in Milan was a pure joy for the senses. From the sleek silhouettes of Armani to the classic elegance of Prada and the bold colours and exquisite fabrics of Dolce & Gabbana, I felt like I had walked into a fashion fantasy! It's all about discovering hidden gems and unique designs in the bustling, fashion-obsessed city. My most fabulous find? A silk scarf adorned with hand-painted ballerinas, twirling under the Italian sun! Naturally, I wore it with my pink tutu – what else!

Speaking of ballet, I'm already getting butterflies (the non-embroidered kind this time!) in anticipation of tonight’s show at Teatro alla Scala. As an avid ballet enthusiast, visiting the legendary Teatro alla Scala was like visiting a sacred space. This historic opera house with its elegant grandeur is an iconic symbol of Italian culture and artistic brilliance.

Today was a bit like walking through a backstage glimpse of a lavish production. Stepping into its hallowed halls felt like a stepping onto a stage, a vibrant spectacle where history unfolded through every intricate carving and gilded frame. It truly is a cultural masterpiece that is almost as breathtaking as a ballerina performing on its stage.

I even went to a local ballet studio near the theatre. Imagine, my pink tutu swirling in a tiny space crammed with passionate young dancers. They were all so talented, pushing their limits, and with a grace that had me entranced. I took notes on a few steps that I simply had to add to my repertoire. After all, a girl's gotta keep her skills sharp. And the best part? They even gave me a special dance class led by the ballet master. This isn't a chore for me, darling - It’s a dream come true!

Speaking of dreams, the delicious scent of pizza from the local pizzeria that I'm walking past now reminds me of the first thing I want to do when I return to my hotel. After that? More sightseeing of course!

Milano is just bursting with charming little squares tucked away between busy streets. I stumbled upon a small hidden piazza near my hotel – the perfect place to indulge in some people watching with a steaming cappuccino. Imagine, my favourite pink tutu nestled amongst the chatter and laughter as I watch Milanese life unfold. It felt so authentic and real, a vibrant canvas filled with lively stories waiting to be told. It's all about slowing down, soaking up the atmosphere, and enjoying the small, but beautiful details that make this city so captivating.

Remember how I told you I’d be seeing a ballet tonight? The stage was already setting for the grand finale to my whirlwind Milanese adventure. It’s a timeless classic, Swan Lake, and I'm practically giddy with anticipation. You see, there's nothing quite like watching a beautifully choreographed dance performance in one of the most iconic theatres in the world.

Can you even imagine a more romantic ballet to watch in such a magical place? I can just see myself standing in the front row, twirling in my pink tutu as the swans take flight in this historical masterpiece. The music will sweep me away, the costumes will sparkle like stars, and the performers will effortlessly glide through each step, making the impossible look effortless. My ballet shoes will be longing to be back in the studio after seeing these talented dancers! Maybe tonight's ballet will inspire some new moves for my own pink tutu performance. I’ll be sure to tell you all about it next week, with a few more photos of my adventures, naturally!

So that’s it from Milan this week, my dearest fellow pink tutu lovers! But the adventures of this tutu-clad ballerina continue… I’m off now to explore some more of this fabulous city. My travels continue across Italy next week - it's onto Firenze, where I will be stepping into a whole new realm of artistry, culture, and beauty. This pink tutu, dear readers, has a lot more of Italy to explore! And what I discover, I shall tell you all about it!

Until then, ciao and keep twirling!

Emma
