Pink Tutu Milan: Post #197 - Milan, March 17th 1999.
Ciao, darling! It's Emma from your favourite Pink Tutu blog, and boy, have I got a story for you. Buckle up, because this week I’ve been dancing my way through Milan! Yes, that's right, the fashion capital of the world, and guess what? Milan is not just for couture and chic, it's absolutely positively pink tutu ready too.
*(Don’t forget to tell all your friends about PinkTutu! Share this post, spread the joy and tell everyone in your town, your city and all over the globe that everyone can and should wear pink tutus! We’re a pink tutu family, darling.) *
This week, I journeyed here after two weeks dancing in Birmingham (you know, my lovely, lovely Derbyshire, the Peak District, where we’ve been for the past month…and next week, we are off to Bath, the prettiest of English spa towns!) This journey, it involved a lot of travelling. From Birmingham to the city of Nottingham (on the lovely 240 tram, very quick, very sleek and very much recommended if you ever need to go to Nottingham! ) followed by the train to London's Euston station and the Eurostar to Milan! What a whirlwind! And the beauty of it is that there’s been ballet every step of the way. My first stop, after my whirlwind journey, was a breathtaking performance at the Teatro alla Scala.
A Ballet Ballet Night at Teatro alla Scala!
Yes, the magnificent Teatro alla Scala. This grand house, this temple of art, it just radiated history and majesty! It has this very beautiful gilded interior and has been a famous theatre since 1778. It's got these elegant velvet seating, that gorgeous, glorious gold. It truly took my breath away! I was even more excited for the ballet because I heard this theatre was going to host the very famous and renowned Bolshoi Ballet, in the next couple of days! What a treat that will be. I’ve been dreaming of the Bolshoi ballet since I was a young dancer and learning to turn and leap. To be so close, is amazing!
But back to my story. The ballet, oh, the ballet was just superb, exquisite, glorious! It was this classical piece, something called "Swan Lake" about this beautiful princess who gets cursed, transformed into a swan by this, very nasty, spell. The ballerina, she was phenomenal, like a delicate swan. Her dance moves were beautiful and graceful, so moving! The performance was just beautiful, but a little bit of drama also and the sad ending, I have to say, moved me very deeply. I did wonder, what had the wicked wizard ever done to deserve her? She’d been a sweet, kind and beautiful princess before that curse. So, as a ballerina and dancer I could truly understand the princess’s feelings! You could tell, she really understood the pain and loneliness of her being a swan, a trapped and unloved swan. It was incredibly affecting, and just beautiful and poignant and the very best classical ballet I’ve ever seen. But the best bit was I wore my pink tutu to see it and so many people noticed me, especially during the interval. There was even a group of dancers, girls about my age, that gasped and rushed to congratulate me! We were giggling with happiness that our passion was shared.

A Fashion Dream
Now, you already know, dear readers, my love for fashion. And what better place to feed my soul, and find the very perfect pink tutu for my next big show than Milan, the world fashion capital, for heaven’s sake! But you know, you just can’t go for a girly girly stroll past the designer boutiques without taking photos, can you? What else am I here for, except my darling fashion followers?!
That was one thing that this trip really hammered home to me: that I need a much bigger bag to hold all the stuff I pick up! All the little trinkets and beautiful shoes, that you just need to try, you know? It’s essential to know about a fabulous little independent designer shoe store! So you can't just expect me to simply walk by. And the shop assistants, so divine and helpful. There was a lovely chap who gave me an expert tip. Apparently, you always have to keep one foot outside the shop to test the texture, shine and feel of the leather! Otherwise, you never really get the feeling of the leather, do you?
As for the bags I ended up taking home (don’t worry darling, you’ll get a post all about them!) there were two in the mix! An incredibly bright magenta pink bag - oh the irony! And I swear darling, it called out my name! You can’t deny fate! Also, a black suede tote from an Italian designer called Francesco Biancini. Francesco Bianchi - fabulous!! He made shoes for Prince Charles, you know! This little tote was beautifully decorated with hand-made crystals, and there were even sequins and tiny pieces of diamante scattered like stars over this gorgeous velvety, luscious black bag, with a bit of the gold embroidery mixed in. What I adore about Francesco's bags, they look like the softest velvet cloud, even though they're actually very durable! So, I couldn’t possibly say no to that little treat. Just like with that magenta pink, it was practically speaking to me. But you know me, darlings! Only the finest. Only the very best will ever grace this little fashionista! So the treat will come in handy for all my upcoming performances, right? It'll be perfect for holding all my lovely dance gear and make-up essentials and of course my pink tutu. I always need the right outfit and make-up and everything needs to go well! Oh, how I love these little details. Don’t forget to check out that fab new collection at my online store: [Pink Tutu store name here!].
The City and Tram Ride
Anyway, darlings, you know how much I love to take the tram or travel by train (especially on long journeys where I can sit by the window and observe the landscape whizzing by…how fabulous to be in motion!) And this time I’ve really been embracing all things Italian. What did I do this week? Took the lovely 90 tram line - very modern - that zips around, and in a very short space of time whisked me right from one side of this stunning city to the other, right through the center! What a fantastic, economical way to get around and very much more enjoyable and less crowded than that chaotic Italian underground. And all around me there was beauty - from that very modern tram window - architecture, shops, and people, going about their lives!
I do hope that you like these regular blogs and stories that I put up on my Pink Tutu blog - every Monday at 5pm. I know it takes me forever to get all this loveliness done, but I try hard to tell you everything! I find so many beautiful places! Remember my aim is to make pink tutus accessible and desirable! We're all one pink tutu family. Until next time darling! Keep sparkling! Emma xxx
