Pink Tutu Milan - Post #326: Dancing Amongst the Duomo!

Buongiorno from sunny Milan! This week's Pink Tutu adventure takes us to the fashion capital of Italy, a place I've been dreaming of visiting ever since I saw my first Dolce & Gabbana advert in a dusty Derbyshire magazine. It's fair to say that my arrival in this iconic city didn't disappoint - think cobblestone streets, historic buildings, the smell of fresh espresso and, of course, fabulous fashion!

My pink tutu was practically bursting with excitement as I hopped off the train from Venice. My first glimpse of Milan’s iconic Duomo sent shivers down my spine – its intricate marble facade was simply breathtaking! Even before I'd settled into my adorable little apartment, tucked away in a quiet courtyard just a short walk from the Duomo, I could feel the city's energy buzzing all around me.

Milan: A Dance of Fashion and History

Milan is a city where history and modernity dance a perfect waltz. Everywhere I look, I see magnificent examples of Renaissance architecture alongside chic designer boutiques and buzzing cafes. It's a city where tradition and innovation go hand in hand. And speaking of dancing, that's where my journey truly began.

My very first stop was Teatro alla Scala – one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world! It felt incredible to be standing outside the opulent, golden-hued building, which is almost as famous as the dancers it hosts. Imagine, my friends! To grace this very stage! It's a dream I can barely contain.

Pink Tutu On A Fashion Quest

After my little detour into the world of opera, I indulged my inner fashionista with a trip to Via Montenapoleone. This glamorous shopping street is a veritable wonderland of luxury, boasting boutiques like Prada, Gucci, and Valentino. My pink tutu and I felt quite at home among the elegant clientele, gliding between displays of beautiful shoes, handbags and garments. But it wasn't just the high-end brands that caught my eye; Milan's independent designers have such an eye for unique, vibrant pieces. The window displays and the city's fashion vibe made me feel like a part of a colourful ballet performance - all with an elegant backdrop of Baroque architecture.

My Day with the Tram and The Tram and The Tram…

Milan is truly a city made for exploring by foot, and the tram, of course. The city’s tramway network is one of the largest in Europe. I embraced this urban exploration, taking long strolls and catching the tram to navigate through different districts. The tram became my pink tutu's transport of choice as I took in the sights, the smells, the sounds of Milan. The tram itself felt like a little adventure as I jostled and laughed alongside friendly locals, each of whom seemed to have a story to tell. It was this charming and informal sense of community that stole my heart in Milan.

Lunch with A View: A True Foodie Delight

No journey to Milan is complete without experiencing the culinary delights the city has to offer. The other night I treated myself to a delicious, romantic, al fresco lunch overlooking the Duomo. Fresh pasta, sun-warmed plates, laughter - it was truly heavenly! I don't mind admitting to a few extra servings of the tiramisu for dessert…

A Day in Milan's Museums

On my most recent adventure, I delved into the city's rich cultural history by visiting the renowned Museo del Novecento, which is housed within a gorgeous, Art Nouveau-inspired building. The contemporary art pieces here really stirred my soul – each piece like a poignant dance on a silent stage. The building itself is so full of history – you could imagine the energy of artists, dancers and musicians swirling within its walls.

But Milan is not just about grand buildings and museum exhibitions; it's about life bursting with creativity and excitement at every corner. This is why I simply adore wandering the backstreets of this magnificent city. Discovering quaint boutiques selling handmade jewellery, hidden cafés overflowing with fragrant espresso and friendly locals with fascinating stories to share. It’s like a whole other world waiting to be unveiled!

Teatro Alla Scala – The Grand Finale!

The evening arrived when I had finally realised a long-held dream! To watch a performance at Teatro Alla Scala – a true cultural temple! The whole building felt alive with an electric anticipation. The ornate gilded interiors, the whispers of anticipation and the hush that fell before the performance began - the aura felt powerful and full of passion. The grandeur of the theatre simply swept me away, and the performance itself, well, I think it brought a tear to my eye… a magical performance by the famed Italian dancer, Francesca Ambrosio - it really transported me, taking me on an incredible journey to another world, a world where pink tutus danced beneath shimmering chandeliers.

A Pink Tutu Farewell to Milan

I feel so fortunate to have spent a week in this captivating city. Every day was an enchanting ballet of sights, sounds, tastes and emotions. The energy is palpable and electrifying. It is impossible to be unaffected by the passionate atmosphere that seeps from every corner. But my adventure continues – on Wednesday, I'm taking the train to Rome, ready for a brand-new chapter in my Pink Tutu travels!

As I write this, the sun is setting over Milan. It’s lighting up the Duomo in hues of golden and pink – it’s almost like it’s trying to match my outfit! I think that if you could bottle this moment, the scent of the city, the Duomo glittering against the twilight, I think you’d be able to bottle the essence of Milan. A place where you’re encouraged to shine bright and celebrate all things fashion, art, and culture, which is, of course, all close to the heart of a pink tutu wearing blogger. I leave you, my loyal readers, with the echoes of a magnificent city resonating through me. And if you ever get the chance to visit this vibrant and charming city, grab a coffee, put on a pink tutu (it’s the only way to experience true Milan, I’m certain!) and go out to explore.

Until next Monday!

Yours in pink, Emma xx

P.S. What a week to be in Milan. There’s so much going on! From art exhibitions at Palazzo Reale to the international fashion showcase of Milano Moda Donna - which runs until the 12th. Did I mention the fashion! You could watch endless fashion parades here and not be bored for a single second. The streets are alive with Milan’s finest dressed and each window display is a testament to the imagination, innovation and sheer beauty of Milanese fashion. It’s enough to make a pink tutu want to start spinning.
