Pink Tutu Milan - Wednesday 16th February 2005

Ciao from Milan, darlings! This is my very first Wednesday post from the fashion capital of the world! I absolutely love Italy, the language, the food, the sunshine - but I do think the Italians have got their fashion all wrong. There isn't enough pink, not nearly enough pink. Why else would I be on a mission to spread the joy of pink tutus across the globe, eh?

But today I want to share with you a whirlwind of a day - it started bright and early, which is not something I'm typically known for. Usually, it's a lazy afternoon rise after a night at the ballet. But, darling, things are different in Milan!

First things first - the deliciousness of breakfast at this adorable little cafe just around the corner from my little pension (so much cuter than saying "hotel," isn't it?). Cappuccino, pastries... Oh, it was practically heaven! After the sugary indulgence, I embarked on my most important mission: exploring Milan's beautiful tram system. They are absolutely stunning!

It reminded me of the tram back in Derbyshire, but way more chic! You wouldn't catch the trams there wearing a pink tutu... you might see me wearing one though. 😉 In Milan, everything is bigger and bolder - including the stylishness of their trams! This means that getting to my dance class at the Scuola di Ballo was absolutely a visual feast. Can you imagine? Pink tutu, pink bag, pink phone, bouncing around on the tram like a sugarplum fairy!

And my ballet class... oh my! Just like a symphony of beautiful movements! We worked on our pirouettes and grand jetés (I managed three! Whoop whoop!), and afterwards, there was a real feeling of accomplishment - but I just had to try on those adorable new ballet shoes I'd bought this morning from a tiny little shop near the Scuola di Ballo. Pink, of course. But with little sparkling sequins! They were just too cute to resist.

Now, it wouldn't be a trip to Milan without exploring the world of high fashion. I headed towards Via Monte Napoleone after lunch (another delightful Italian delight of course!)... I know, I know, it sounds all highfalutin', but I do believe in affordable glamour, don't you? You don't need to spend a fortune to make a statement with pink tutus. There's a real art to spotting a bargain and you know I've always got that down to a T.

I confess, darlings, there weren't many pink tutus in the window displays, but I spotted this gorgeous blush-toned dress in one of the chic boutiques. Oh, it was just calling to me! Imagine it, floating down Via Monte Napoleone... pure Italian elegance with a pink twist. Sadly, it was slightly outside my budget. I’m saving my pennies for the new pair of dance shoes I desperately need (also pink!). But let's be honest, a girl's gotta dream!

It's incredible what a good dose of fashion inspiration will do. It was starting to get late so I decided to head back to my pension, feeling all sparkly and filled with pink energy. On my way, I took a little detour to a bustling gelateria just off the beaten path. I got a scoop of raspberry sorbet, with an extra sprinkle of pink, naturally, to top it all off. This, I’m thinking, is going to be my absolute favorite Italian tradition.

For dinner, I discovered this tiny trattoria down a quiet street and I absolutely fell in love. The food was simple but divine! Just a perfectly prepared plate of spaghetti carbonara that would make even the most sophisticated buona giornata proud! The place was bursting with happy chatter and a warm, friendly atmosphere. It really reminded me of the comfort and cheerfulness of a proper Italian Nonna (a term of endearment, it means "Grandma" but it signifies something a little bit extra!).

As I sat back, reflecting on my whirlwind day, it occurred to me - a Nonna would definitely embrace the pink tutu! Maybe if I just spread the pink tutu magic to a few more places, I might just end up inspiring every Nonna in Italy to try one on! Wouldn’t that be beautiful?

Oh, before I go, did I mention today is a big day in Milan? They are holding an opera performance tonight, "Tosca" at the iconic Teatro alla Scala. A classical masterpiece! Even better, one of my dearest friends from Derbyshire (a fellow pink tutu devotee, of course) is joining me!

I’ll be sure to report on the glamorous outfits we choose! I bet you can guess who's rocking the pink tutu. I wouldn't miss it for the world!

So there you have it, darlings, another day filled with fashion, ballet, delicious food, and plenty of pink! Don’t forget to check back on my blog next Monday, for another adventure, and remember, always let your inner pink tutu shine!

Until next time,

Emma
