Pink Tutu Milan: #740 - Ciao Bella! Adventures in the City of Fashion!

Wednesday, 2009-08-12

Helloooo my darling Tutu Tribe!

It's me, Emma, your favourite pink-tutu-wearing travel blogger, beaming back at you from the glamorous streets of Milan! I'm officially smitten with this city.

As I type this, I'm sitting on a comfy leather chair at the gorgeous Café Central. It’s bustling with chic Milanese ladies, looking fabulous in their linen trousers and bold shades, sipping cappuccinos and discussing the latest fashion trends. My cappuccino is cooling ever so slightly and the faint aroma of freshly baked bread is wafting over from the cafe next door, tantalizing my taste buds. It's truly idyllic.

This is my fourth time in Milan, and each time, I discover something new, some little gem of fashion, art, or architectural delight. It’s just so utterly inspiring! Milan is a kaleidoscope of creativity, and my darling Tutu Tribe knows I’m absolutely hooked.

Ballet Beginnings: Backstage at Teatro alla Scala

The day kicked off with an early morning ballet class at the Teatro alla Scala – a complete bucket-list tick! It’s considered one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses and a truly magnificent building! It was just mind-blowing! This historic venue has been around since 1778, so you can only imagine how rich with history it feels. I just love it. I don’t know how many ballets I saw there growing up in Derbyshire but that little village girl couldn’t have dreamt in her wildest dreams I would ever perform on this legendary stage.

Even getting ready backstage was pure magic. I was in awe as I walked through the opulent halls, my little pink tutu shimmering in the glorious light, just another ballerina living her dream. The energy was electrifying, and I knew, in this very moment, this was where I was meant to be.

I even got to share a conversation with one of the ballerinas, Isabella, who told me all about her incredible journey with the company. She was so gracious, showing me the ropes, explaining the different costumes and props, and letting me in on all the fun behind the scenes. I'll tell you, my darling Tutu Tribe, it was truly like stepping into another world.

Tutus and Shopping: A Fashion Fiesta!

My darling Tutu Tribe knows how much I love shopping and I have a major confession… Milan, darling, has truly spoiled me rotten! I have gone a little crazy and splurged on a new sequined pink tutu – I mean, what else is a girl to do in the fashion capital? laughs

My shopping adventure began at Via Monte Napoleone which is known as the heart of luxury shopping in Milan. My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw the shop windows. Each one was more fabulous than the last! Oh, I can't help but love the endless displays of breathtakingly beautiful couture creations. But my sweet Tutu Tribe, the most delightful part of my day was discovering a tiny vintage shop nestled away down a little backstreet. It was stuffed to the rafters with exquisite pieces, each whispering tales of bygone eras! I found a pair of stunning pearl-buttoned shoes which would be perfect with my new tutu! And I can’t wait to try them out at my next ballet class.

La dolce vita - Eating My Way Through Milan

Milan is known for its sophisticated, chic style, and it doesn’t stop at its fashion. My Tutu Tribe knows, it extends to the food as well! This afternoon, I took a trip to Piazza Duomo where I sampled the most divine slice of tiramisu - heaven! The rich, creamy coffee flavour combined with the fluffy sponge, it was utter perfection.

I also savored the quintessential Milanese dish, Cotoletta alla Milanese. It's a thin, breaded veal cutlet, lightly fried, served with a squeeze of lemon. Talk about comfort food, my darling Tutu Tribe! I'll admit, it wasn't quite as healthy as my usual ballet-approved menu, but when you’re in a city this beautiful, you simply must embrace the la dolce vita, don’t you think? wink

Evening Bliss: Back in the Ballet World!

And what a fabulous day it’s been, but as you can tell, my darling Tutu Tribe, my love of the stage is strong! I had the pleasure of seeing Swan Lake at the Teatro degli Arcimboldi - one of my all-time favourites. It’s not your classic Swan Lake, this version was contemporary, which is what I love so much about ballet – its capacity for evolution! The dancers were exceptional; their grace and agility truly breathtaking! I think it goes without saying but this version had an updated version of Odette, not white tutus, but rather a modern interpretation that I simply adored. You could sense the sheer passion they exuded in each pirouette, each leap. And it is this passion that inspires me, my darling Tutu Tribe, to strive to be better, to reach for my own dream – and maybe, just maybe, one day, to dance on the stage where I danced this morning – that magnificent Teatro alla Scala.

Travel like a Tutu Princess - Tram & Train Adventures

Before you rush out and book your trip to Milan, my darling Tutu Tribe, you must understand there is a side to Milan that is definitely not about designer stores or haute couture. I am all about my travelling in style, you see. That’s why I embrace public transport in all its glory - trams and trains. I think the experience of local life, especially in a bustling city, is vital for making those amazing memories. Plus, getting to Milan from London, or anywhere else in the UK, is super easy! So jump on a train and make your way through Europe! You won't regret it. The best bit of taking trains in Milan is the glamorous and very fast metro, as opposed to London’s tube! I can’t get over the elegance of Milan’s transport system. The carriages are shiny, polished, and comfortable - making even the busiest commutes enjoyable.

From Derbyshire to Milan: Living my Dream

It’s still crazy to think, only a few years ago, I was a little girl in Derbyshire dreaming of dancing in the world’s most beautiful cities! Now I'm doing just that!

My journey to get here hasn’t always been easy - but the hard work, the hours of practice, the dedication to my passion – it has been more than worth it! You never know, my darling Tutu Tribe, what you’re capable of until you truly go for it, set your sights on your dream and don't stop till you get there! Don't forget you're all Tutu Queens in your own way - go out there, sparkle, and own your world.

Until next week, my lovelies, and keep spreading the pink tutu love!

Lots of love,

Emma xx
