Pink Tutu Milan: #854 A Whirlwind of Italian Charm

Wednesday 19th October 2011

Buongiorno, darlings! It's Emma here, back from the most magical week in Milan! I'm feeling like I've been twirling in a whirlwind of cobbled streets, stunning architecture, delicious food, and even more fabulous fashion. As always, I've got a full report on all the pink tutu-worthy happenings - just keep on reading, darlings!

From Derbyshire to Milano - The Pink Tutu Takes Flight

It all started with a very early morning flight from the UK - I can't believe how quickly it all goes! After saying goodbye to the green fields of Derbyshire (and promising to be back soon), I was already gliding through the beautiful Milanese airport, feeling that wonderful ‘fresh start’ buzz that only travelling brings.

I had, of course, packed my signature pink tutu – it’s a ‘must have’ in my luggage, always! My favourite travel tutu this time around was my new fluffy number in a shade of baby pink, with sparkling little diamantes that catch the light perfectly - absolutely divine!

Trams and Twirls in the City of Fashion

There’s nothing quite like a ride on a Milanese tram. The elegant green trams glide through the city with a graceful ease that somehow seems to match my own love for graceful movement - it's like a miniature ballet on rails, honestly! It's a very efficient and beautiful way to get around, so much more elegant than taking the underground!

My first stop had to be the iconic Duomo. I'd seen pictures, of course, but it truly exceeded my expectations. Those magnificent gothic spires against a clear Italian sky, the intricate detail on the façade – I stood there speechless, admiring the craftsmanship. A little ballet “arabesque” in front of it, to mark the occasion, felt absolutely essential! It just had to be captured on Instagram, of course, #PinkTutuMilan!

A Day at the Teatro Alla Scala

Speaking of ‘Arabesque’, I simply had to visit the legendary Teatro Alla Scala – what a fabulous setting! This magnificent theatre, the epicentre of opera and ballet for over two centuries, has a certain magic that's impossible to explain. The moment you enter that imposing neoclassical building you feel the history – you can almost hear the echoes of famous ballerinas who graced the stage centuries ago. I spent the afternoon just wandering through the auditorium, taking it all in, and it was truly breathtaking.

Of course, no visit to Milan would be complete without a show at La Scala, so I booked tickets to see a new production of 'Swan Lake.' The stage sets were spectacular - they transported me to a magical realm where swans gracefully swirled through moonlit lakes. The costumes were breathtaking, and the performance itself was phenomenal – a dazzling display of skill, artistry, and emotion.

The dancers were extraordinary - I felt my toes tapping, and my own heart yearning to be part of the show, just as I'm sure I did back in the Derbyshire countryside as a little girl. There's a raw passion and beauty in watching professional dancers – they truly make ballet look effortless and it's something I try to emulate in my own dance classes and shows, of course.

Fashion Inspiration on Every Corner

Of course, my trip wouldn't be complete without some fashion-inspired exploration! Every boutique, shopfront, even the street vendors are bursting with inspiration. I found myself falling in love with the bold colours, luxurious textures, and elegant shapes of Italian fashion. A chic dress with a flowing skirt for a “jet set” feel (perhaps with a tiny pink tutu underneath!), a sophisticated leather jacket, the classic trench coat, an exquisite pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes … Oh, Milan! You are simply irresistible.

The designer fashion houses – from Prada to Armani to Valentino - they each have their unique magic that just seems to emanate from their stores! Each boutique has a different aesthetic - minimalist elegance, bold, statement pieces, whimsical glamour - it truly is an inspiring wonderland for fashionistas like myself.

I couldn't resist a bit of shopping, of course, so I found a beautiful new pink tutu in a delightful little shop on the Via Monte Napoleone. It has an exquisitely embroidered floral pattern in pale pinks and yellows - perfect for a stroll around the city on a bright Italian afternoon.

Street Theatre in the Heart of Milan

Milan is a city of surprises – where you least expect it, you’ll find incredible street theatre, bringing the vibrant life of the city alive. I came across a group of street performers just by the cathedral, dressed in fantastically colourful costumes, creating vibrant character dances around a big brass band. They had a truly captivating presence that completely transformed the cobbled street - I couldn't resist joining in and dancing along! The infectious energy of their performance brought the street alive, and people were clapping, laughing and truly engaging with it – it’s like having the whole city join in with an impromptu ballet performance, just as if it was in a beautiful theatre itself!

Dancing With the Stars (of Italy!)

I even managed to squeezed in a ballet class during my stay! Imagine this – a sunny studio, with beautiful wood flooring that creaked ever so slightly with every elegant step. The light streamed through the large windows casting a soft glow over everyone as they warmed up. There were dancers of all ages and abilities in this welcoming studio, and every step I took felt completely natural - the teacher, Signora Bellini, is absolutely incredible! The elegance and sophistication in her movements was intoxicating. I could see that the “Milanese movement”, so to speak, had an elegant poise that perfectly captured the style of the city – absolutely captivating!

Delicious Delights and Coffee Culture

I also had to take full advantage of Milan's gastronomic delights. I mean, eating my way through the city was absolutely essential, darlings! Every day seemed to involve a new, delicious Italian delicacy. The pasta, the pastries, the ice cream… I don’t think I have ever had such heavenly food before! It all just seemed so natural and flavourful. I love how much time Italians dedicate to enjoying their food and drinks - it seems like a central part of every day and I really connected with that “la dolce vita” vibe that is all about living life to the full, which really is a fantastic thing to live by, wouldn't you agree, darling?

One of my absolute favourites was a lovely little coffee bar near La Scala. It had this beautiful floral wall, all full of blooming roses – very pink tutu friendly, of course! I just had to have a cup of cappuccino (so thick and creamy it was like a velvety cloud!), it felt so chic sitting in the heart of this coffee culture, especially when served in a tiny little china cup – so very European!

From Dusk till Dawn – A Magical End

The last day in Milan seemed to fly by! I woke up early and took another ride on one of those enchanting green trams and made my way back to the Duomo – I felt such a connection to the energy of the city – this magical place full of art, culture, history and most importantly, an appreciation for the beautiful and elegant things in life, which I adored! I must make sure I take my tutu dancing on every Milan visit, you know?

Milan will forever be special to me. The beauty of its architecture, the excitement of its fashion, and the charm of its people make it an unforgettable city. I'm already dreaming of my next visit, but for now, I'll be sharing my memories – and photos, of course! – and living it up back in my little corner of Derbyshire!

And as I sign off from Milan – always remember, darlings! Live your dreams, twirl freely, and always embrace your own inner ballerina! Don't be afraid to embrace your individuality, express yourself in every single step you take – be fearless and let your true self shine through.

Until next week,

Lots of love,

Emma xx
