Pink Tutu Milan: Wednesday 2014-05-21 - A Day of Grace and Glittering Delights!

Ciao from Milano! The sun is shining, the air is buzzing with the sweet scent of blossoming mimosa, and I'm feeling oh so very inspired by this vibrant city. This week, I'm embracing every opportunity for a little bit of fashion, a dash of dance, and a whole lot of charm, and wouldn't you know it, Milan is the perfect place for that.

As usual, I’m reaching you from my trusty notebook, tucked away in a chic café just off the bustling Via Montenapoleone. I’ve just finished a delicious cappuccino, the creamy froth leaving a delightful whisper on my lips. And what a way to start a Wednesday! The city has been particularly delightful this morning. The colours of Milan - oh, they just sing! - especially when paired with my bright pink tutu, which has definitely become my travelling companion of choice. My motto, you see, is ‘pink is always the answer!’

The past few days have been a whirl of breathtaking architecture, incredible museums, and a very, very pink gelato-fueled spree - the flavour, naturally, was strawberry! It seems I’ve found a kindred spirit in the people of Milan – they adore their fashion, their architecture, their delicious coffee, and I'm just a girl after my own heart when it comes to my tutu!

Ballet by Day:

First stop on the agenda was Teatro alla Scala - an architectural marvel, just like a fairytale. It was built back in 1778 and since then has housed some of the greatest operatic and theatrical performances imaginable. Just being in the same space where generations of legends have graced the stage is truly awe-inspiring. I can practically hear the hushed gasps as a famous opera singer takes the stage, the stirring orchestras rising like waves, and the thundering applause.

My journey, of course, was fuelled by my love of ballet. I have been eagerly anticipating tonight's performance at the Teatro alla Scala. You wouldn't believe it, it's none other than Swan Lake! I could hardly wait! You know, Milan has such a rich ballet tradition. After all, it's the home of the La Scala Opera, known worldwide for its sheer artistry and grandeur.

I confess, I spent a good hour simply marvelling at the exterior of the theatre before venturing inside. And even then, the opulence didn't let up! There was rich velvet, intricate gold detailing, a breathtaking grand foyer - even the smallest detail was an embodiment of elegance. I was utterly mesmerized, feeling like a delicate ballerina twirling in a beautiful dream. I just couldn't resist snapping a few photos for my Instagram, which, of course, I dedicated to my wonderful followers who never fail to inspire me to keep going, to follow my dreams, and to always wear pink.

Afternoon Adventures:

Later this afternoon, I’ll be strolling down the enchanting Corso Buenos Aires, stopping by charming shops with a focus on unique handcrafted items – perfect for finding a beautiful little memento for myself and some of my closest friends. Milan's got something for every taste, you know - exquisite boutiques with dazzling windows, bustling markets bursting with local produce, and even an occasional charming café tucked away in a cobblestone alleyway.

Then, later on, I plan to indulge in the art scene and head to one of Milan's prestigious museums - they say The Poldi Pezzoli Museum boasts an amazing collection of 15th- and 16th-century paintings. Oh, it’s bound to be inspiring! Milan seems to have art woven into its fabric. Not only can you admire sculptures in the squares, you find art pieces decorating almost every building you pass. It's incredible.

After that, I'll be indulging in a true Milanese treat. Imagine this: I'll find myself on a scenic tram ride, sipping a delicious cappucino, watching the world pass me by. It is always so lovely to soak up the city's vibrant energy this way. As I whizz by with the other travellers, I think about all the inspiring people in the world who live life on their own terms.

Ballet Dreams by Night:

This evening will be a magical treat. The theatre awaits - and the anticipation is just building and building! To be at Teatro alla Scala is one thing, to experience ballet on its legendary stage is quite another! Tonight, I'll be immersing myself in the romantic tragedy of Tchaikovsky's 'Swan Lake' with a delicious symphony of twirls, a melancholic yet thrilling story. It will be a night of beauty, elegance and passion!

Tonight is my absolute favourite kind of night! After the show, I might try some local 'aperitivo'. It seems this drink has a certain je ne sais quoi! They say you can find fabulous aperitivo cocktails throughout the city, from swanky rooftop bars with amazing panoramic city views, to more modest local establishments filled with lively conversation. But no matter what, you know I'll be keeping my fabulous tutu close at hand, for wherever I go, it’s the pinkest and the prettiest! It's more than just an outfit. It's a way of life!

Speaking of inspiration... how can I encourage more people to embrace their love for pink and embrace the beauty of dance? I just know the world is a much prettier place in a tutu! There's no reason to limit oneself. After all, tutus come in so many colours now – every shade imaginable - and some even have sequins and bows!

It seems like the most exciting thing in the world right now is just that - trying something new! Perhaps you could try some of these suggestions for embracing pink and ballet?

  • Go out to see a ballet show, even if it’s your first time! The first time you watch a live ballet is just magic!
  • Find yourself a ballet class near you and take a beginners’ lesson – it doesn’t matter if you're young or old! It’s never too late to take a leap!
  • Wear a pink tutu on your next evening out, and watch the compliments roll in!

The key, my lovelies, is to have the courage to express yourself. You've only got one life, and you don’t know who you might inspire, so why not have fun and embrace every opportunity with your pink tutu on? You never know - you just might find you love ballet as much as I do.

This week I’m trying to remind myself of this golden rule - just live with an open heart, dance with passion, and make every day feel magical! Until next time!

Your dearest Pink Tutu blogger,

Emma.

I fell in love with its elegant Gothic spires as I marvelled at Milan's captivating Duomo Square. What's more, my visit was graced by a wonderful little gelato shop where I treated myself to a delicious strawberry and pink grapefruit concoction. It’s easy to fall in love with Italy.

And it didn't disappoint. Oh, what a fantastic ballet performance that was. It made my soul soar and brought tears to my eyes. But who'd tell that from these photos? Just look how ecstatic I am!

* I Love the Milan Tram System:* Here in Milan, one of my absolute favourite things to do is hop onto one of their lovely vintage trams - with that delightful “ding ding” sound they make when stopping! I just adore this city's efficient tram network – the whole experience feels so quintessentially Milanese! The ride is a fantastic way to enjoy the architecture as it goes rushing past the window, like watching a fashion show, really. But what I love best of all is the way you get to mingle with the locals. I feel like I am part of a bustling, beautiful dance, a choreography made up of everyday Milanese life.
My Love for Milan is as Strong as My Love for Ballet:

Milan is one of my very favourite cities in the world, and its beautiful ballet heritage is simply second to none. Every time I visit, I feel inspired and alive with a sense of purpose!
