Pink Tutu Milan - #1115 - Wednesday 2016-10-19

Bonjour from Milan, darlings! The air here is electric, and it's not just the amazing espresso that's got me buzzing. This week I've been wrapped up in the most delightful ballet experience, exploring the city's beautiful ballet scene, all while rocking my signature pink tutu (because let's face it, when in Milan, one must always wear their most fabulous outfit).

For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of meeting me, I'm Emma, your friendly neighbourhood ballet enthusiast. I hail from the rolling hills of Derbyshire, England, and my heart beats for everything ballet. This includes twirling around in the prettiest tutus (the pinker, the better!), catching stunning performances, and delving into the world of fashion that intertwines so seamlessly with ballet.

And if you're wondering how I fund all these magical adventures? Well, let's just say that a talented ballerina never goes without. My dance shoes have taken me to some incredible places, and this trip was no exception. I performed for the delightful people of Milan last weekend, showcasing some of my favourite pieces from the classic repertoire. I can’t tell you how much joy it brings me to see the smiles on the audience’s faces as they watch my performance!

Speaking of faces beaming, this past week has been an absolute whirl. We (my favourite, fluffiest pink tutu and I) took to the cobbled streets of Milan, inhaling the vibrant energy of the city and marvelling at its magnificent architecture. Of course, any trip to Milan is incomplete without a visit to Teatro alla Scala, Italy’s most renowned opera house.

The magnificent marble interior, the velvet-lined balconies, the ornate chandeliers – everything whispered “grandeur,” even the air felt refined. The only thing more exquisite than the theatre itself was the performance we were fortunate to see, "La Traviata," the iconic opera by Verdi. The soprano's voice soared above the orchestra, the music pulling at my heartstrings.

From the captivating opera, we moved on to a rather splendid ballet. The Teatro dal Verme (one of Milan's historical and artistic gems) hosted the Teatro alla Scala's ballet company in "Romeo and Juliet". Watching these seasoned professionals capture the passionate story of the iconic lovers through the magic of ballet was simply breathtaking. The way they wove together technical prowess with raw emotion and tenderness – it was an exquisite portrayal of a tale that always pulls at my heartstrings.

A walk through Milan wouldn’t be complete without taking a spin in their stylish tram cars, just like Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday. With each clang of the tram’s bell, I couldn’t help but think: this is how you travel in style, like a true Milanese!

And when not engrossed in a show, we spent our days getting lost in Milan's enchanting alleys, each one offering a delightful discovery around the next corner. The aroma of fresh pastries mingled with the floral notes of blooming oleanders, filling my senses.

I couldn’t resist stopping in to one of Milan's charming pastry shops. My inner ballet dancer demands some fuel, and I must admit, I do adore a decadent pastry or two. But this wasn’t your usual bakery; this was a place with the utmost care and pride, offering every sweet creation imaginable, from chocolate croissants to flaky apple turnovers.

While savoring my pastry, my gaze was drawn to a quaint bookshop tucked into an alleyway, its windows showcasing a jumble of volumes on all subjects imaginable, their spines lined up with perfect order. The shopkeeper welcomed me with a warm smile, and after spending several minutes browsing through titles, I finally found the one for me – a new volume of classic Italian poems in a delightful paperback, a perfect reminder of my trip.

Naturally, every travelogue needs its shopping spree, and this trip to Milan was no exception. My motto is simple: When it comes to fashion, more is more. That is why, my darling, we ventured to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Milan's famous glass-covered shopping arcade. Every single boutique I peeked into was filled with such extraordinary treasures, and I was lost in the world of haute couture!

But it was not just the expensive gowns that drew me in – the air crackled with the excitement of seeing each unique piece, every thread meticulously sewn with passion, a story woven into each stitch. It was truly a sensory feast for my fashion-loving heart!

There I discovered a remarkable new boutique, a haven for all things glamorous. This shop was crammed from floor to ceiling with sparkling sequins, feathers, and tulle. My inner fashionista went wild with pure delight, surrounded by the latest styles and classic looks. And, the owner of the shop, a charming lady with a wicked sense of humour, made me feel so welcome, I felt as if I were a guest at a fashion gala.

From her racks, I plucked the most exquisite vintage dress, a cascade of velvet and tulle in shades of pink that shimmered in the soft sunlight. Imagine, darlings, my pink tutu had found its perfect twin in Milan.

My evening, my darlings, ended in true Italian style – an elegant meal with a wine pairing. Milan’s nightlife is just as spectacular as its daytime charms. From Michelin-star restaurants with exquisite food and spectacular wines, to charming trattorias tucked away in hidden alleys. This was the perfect culmination to a magical day in the fashion capital of Italy.

But of course, no trip to Italy would be complete without a proper espresso. And let me tell you, dear reader, their espresso is a whole different game! Made with passion and served with a tiny sugar cube – this caffeine hit is nothing short of an art form.

And so, as I sit down to write this blog post with a steaming mug of Italian espresso and a slice of decadent chocolate cake, my head overflowing with images of a breathtaking Italian sunset, the echoes of “La Traviata”, and the captivating sway of a ballet dancer's movements, I can't help but be utterly smitten with Milan, my pink tutu still swirling with the city's enchantment.

I hope that I’ve captured even a glimmer of the magic that is Milan through this post, dear readers. If you're ever looking for an escape that’s infused with style, sophistication, and pure ballet bliss, then do yourself a favour and hop on a train to Milan! I promise it’ll be an unforgettable adventure.

Until next time, darling! I shall leave you with this - a sprinkle of my ballet magic – keep twirling and spreading pink tutu joy wherever you may be! And remember: Life's too short to not embrace the power of a good pink tutu!

All the best,

Emma
