Pink Tutu Milan: Post 1305 - Whirlwind Wednesday in Milan
Ciao, darlings! It’s Emma here, reporting live from the glamorous, fashion-forward city of Milan, where even the trams are decked out in sleek designer touches!
I've always adored Milan, this city is a wonderland for a fashionista like me. But, honestly, the city never ceases to surprise me. It’s been such a busy week - rehearsals for the Romeo and Juliet performance, catching up with some fabulous fellow dancers, and oh yes, some fabulous shopping!
The air buzzes with energy here – that "gotta have it, gotta wear it" Milan vibe – and this week it felt like the whole city was wearing pink! From the beautiful pale pinks of the spring flowers that adorn the gardens to the cherry-blossom-hued scarves twirling around necks on the street. This pink-tinted wonder reminded me why I wear my tutu almost everywhere - it's like carrying a touch of magic with me wherever I go.
I have to admit, Milan definitely takes "chic" to a whole new level. The Milanese have a unique knack for effortless elegance; they even wear their designer totes with a nonchalance that makes them look like they’re casually carrying a picnic basket! But that’s just Milan for you, don’t you think? Effortlessly stylish, fabulously forward and always a touch extravagant – exactly the way I like my pink tutus!
But, darling, you know me! The tutus are not the only thing that captures my eye, the beautiful architecture and historic cobblestone streets also have me spellbound! Each building whispers tales of grandeur and the scent of freshly baked pastries fills the air. My Italian lessons are finally coming in handy because let me tell you, even asking for directions can become a symphony of delicious pronouncements.
And you can’t come to Milan without indulging in some delightful Italian treats, right? It's simply not allowed. The gelaterias are a symphony of colour and taste, and I've already discovered my new favourite flavour: pistachio, with just a touch of hazelnut. It’s like a creamy dream on a cone. And let's not forget the authentic pasta, it melts in your mouth like…well… like the perfect Italian kiss!
Speaking of delectable delights, one of my absolute favourite pastimes in Milan is wandering through the open-air markets, searching for that one-of-a-kind vintage treasure. Last week I stumbled across the most adorable pink hair scrunchie adorned with little pearl ballet shoes, absolutely perfect for my bun, darling.
This week has been whirlwind, I spent the first two days at my rehearsals for the ballet Romeo and Juliet. It's such a dramatic and emotional piece, and I'm excited to be playing the role of Mercutio’s fiancée – although I am a little bit envious of Juliet's role, just a little! Let me tell you, the tutus they've made for this production are exquisite! We have some truly beautiful, hand-painted silk pieces for the Verona scene and even more luxurious embroidered gowns for the grand ball. Oh, I wish I could share all these treasures with you, darlings!
Wednesday is usually the day for la passeggiata, a leisurely evening stroll through the city centre. My favourite place is along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II - this street is alive with people, shops, and bustling cafes, all radiating that inimitable Milanese style.
It's no wonder this city has become a fashion capital. The design is in everything, from the clothing and jewellery to the intricate detailing on the trams. On Wednesday, I spotted this young artist painting portraits in front of the Duomo – he captured the bustling beauty of Milan in every stroke. I’ve already got an appointment for my own little piece – I plan to have it in my signature shade of pink, of course, with my pink tutu delicately placed at the centre, and a little mouse peeking out from behind, my alter-ego.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows over the ancient churches and cobblestone streets, I found myself thinking back to my tiny hometown of Bakewell in Derbyshire. Although it’s a million miles from here in terms of pace and fashion, there’s something incredibly comforting about finding echoes of home in a place like this. My love of tutus and ballet started there, in the Bakewell Town Hall, when my Nan bought me a second-hand pink tutu with tiny sequins that shimmered under the stage lights. It may not have been the Milanese haute couture of today, but that little tutu was the start of everything.
Now, with the memories of Bakewell still warming my heart, I’m back in my hotel room, sipping a glass of Prosecco and reminiscing about the day. You see, I’m not just here to be a ballerina, darlings. My mission here in Milan is far grander. My dream is to get the entire world to embrace the tutu, to see every woman walking the streets with their own magical swirl of pink tulle! Imagine the possibilities, the joy, the effortless style! Who knows? Maybe one day we'll see a tutu runway show on Corso Vittorio Emanuele!
Speaking of tutus, did you know that today is National Tartan Day in Scotland? Although I’m in Italy, my Scottish side is shouting loud, it's always good to celebrate such festive occasions. But remember, there are no real boundaries when it comes to fashion, darlings! I am thinking of adding a bit of tartan to my wardrobe – it could be so much fun! Imagine a pink tutu with a little bit of plaid – think it could work? Send me your thoughts at pinktutu.com/blog, I’d love to hear your ideas!
I think, darlings, I need to stop myself. It seems I've gone a little "too enthusiastic" again - but hey, it’s Milan! Who could blame me? My cup is overflowing with inspiration!
Before I leave you, do go check out my Instagram stories for my latest fashion find – the perfect pink purse, just like the one Carrie Bradshaw wore in Sex & the City (remember those days?!) and for my next Milanian ballet performance - it's going to be quite the event.
Until next week, keep your spirits high and remember, a touch of pink and a swish of a tutu makes every day feel like a beautiful ballet.
Ciao Bella!
