Pink Tutu Milan #1509: Dancing in the Duomo's Shadow

Ciao bella! It's Emma, your pink-loving ballerina, writing to you from the fashion capital of the world, Milano! This week's adventure takes us on a whirlwind tour of tutus, tram rides, and the most exquisite ballet I've ever seen, all nestled within the shadow of the iconic Duomo.

I've been yearning to explore Milan for ages, ever since I first saw photos of its majestic architecture and the cobbled streets that whisper stories of fashion history. And what better way to arrive than via the sleek, modern Frecciarossa train? You know, I've been thinking, pink tutus and high-speed trains are a match made in heaven. Imagine all the envious looks from the other passengers! 😉

After settling into my little "home" for the week – a quaint B&B with a stunning balcony overlooking a cobbled square - I decided to channel my inner fashionista. I mean, it's Milan! You simply cannot resist the call of the designer boutiques. After all, who can say no to a new tutu?

The shops here are an absolute dream! Each one is bursting with beautiful creations, fabrics as soft as clouds, and accessories that would make even the most glamorous swan jealous. I did have to reign myself in, but I couldn't resist snagging a few delightful accessories: a pearl-encrusted hair clip for a bit of extra sparkle, and a vibrant fuchsia handbag with a delicate chain to add a touch of whimsy to my wardrobe. Oh, and a pair of shimmering silver ballet shoes for the ultimate "Milanese chic" touch. I know, I know, you all thought I had my pink tutu game down to a T, but these silver beauties were a necessary addition. They literally cried out to me "Take me home!"

As the sun began its golden descent, casting long shadows over the bustling streets, I found myself mesmerised by the Duomo. Its marble facade glistened in the evening light, each intricate detail a testament to its glorious history. This iconic cathedral is truly a sight to behold, a graceful masterpiece in a sea of bustling streets. It’s hard to take your eyes away. I just wanted to twirl in front of it!

For dinner, I enjoyed a delicious traditional meal at a little family-run trattoria near the Duomo. Let’s just say I was able to fit it all in thanks to the generosity of the servings – and by generosity I mean quantity! My heart melted for the owner when he brought me out a little plate of handmade ricotta with strawberries – oh, it was a taste of heaven.

After dinner, my excitement grew tenfold. Tonight was the night for the much-anticipated ballet performance at the Teatro alla Scala! This is considered one of the world's most prestigious opera houses, and the anticipation was almost unbearable. I couldn't resist putting on my new pearl hair clip, and adding a splash of fuchsia lipstick, the excitement bubbled over!

And let me tell you, the performance did not disappoint! The choreography was exquisite, telling the timeless tale of Swan Lake with such passion and grace. It was as if the swans themselves had taken to the stage! I couldn’t resist a little happy “squeal” during the dance. Every graceful move, every shimmering costume, was pure artistry, sending chills down my spine and making my heart skip a beat. There were even some very impressive leaps - that is when the little “squeal” broke out. I know I’m not the only one in the audience who enjoys those daring, heart stopping, spectacular movements, right?

Even more amazing was the way the Scala transported you into the world of Swan Lake. The costumes were ethereal, like delicate feathers, and the sets were breathtaking, bringing the fairytale to life right before our very eyes. This was definitely a performance for the memory books. And I even noticed a couple of other tutu-wearing ladies – a good start to my ‘everyone should wear a pink tutu’ mission! I think we made each other smile. It's the simple things.

Of course, no trip to Milan would be complete without a bit of sightseeing. On Wednesday morning, I embarked on a tram adventure, my pink tutu swishing with each turn of the wheels. Milan's trams are a charming and efficient way to explore the city, taking me past beautiful squares, gardens, and charming little cafes. I took so many pictures, and you know how I love sharing them all on Instagram.

I can't leave without sharing my top tips for a truly pink-tastic time in Milan! So here's my pink guide to this chic city:

  • Tram yourself around: Embrace the trams, especially if you're a tutu wearer! It’s a perfect blend of comfort and adventure. You get a glimpse of Milan that a bus just can’t provide.
  • Find your inner fashionista: Milan is all about fashion, so be sure to check out the amazing designer boutiques and shop ‘til you drop! And, of course, always bring your pink tutu, because you never know when you’ll meet other tutu lovers. I know, you might find it a little “much” for some of these boutiques. I was so happy to discover a local store just down the street from my hotel where I found a gorgeous vintage tutu that will perfectly fit my new look. Sometimes, the local finds are the best. I may have even spotted my “Pink Tutu” twins from the show. Maybe, next time, I can muster up the courage to speak to them.
  • Taste the dolce vita: Indulge in delicious Italian cuisine – the pasta, the pizza, the gelato… A little indulgence is good for the soul! Let’s not forget the tiramisu. The perfect combination of sweet, creamy, bitter, and a good dose of coffee! What’s not to love?

I’m going to make this a “must” on my next trip back to Milan. I just love Italian cuisine. There’s a wonderful little trattoria near the Scala that does the most amazing pasta – oh and their selection of wines are pretty great too! But hey, if you find your own hidden gem, let me know. We all need a good "food fix" every once in a while! * Embrace the city's vibrant history: Discover the wonders of Milan's historic centre. Be sure to explore the Sforza Castle and enjoy a picnic in the enchanting Sempione Park. A little bit of nature always provides a nice change from the urban sprawl. My suggestion would be to pack your tutu for the park – the flowers will look gorgeous with the soft pink. * Tutu time! Embrace the magic of ballet. Attend a show at the Teatro alla Scala or check out one of the many ballet performances taking place around the city. And, of course, don't forget to rock your favourite pink tutu for a truly special experience. Who needs Cinderella’s glass slipper when you can have a ballerina’s pink tutu! * Take it slow: Milan may be a bustling city, but it's also a beautiful and romantic destination. Be sure to take your time, explore the charming cafes, and soak up the ambiance of the city.

Well, darling, my time in Milan has flown by – a beautiful, ballet-filled whirlwind, from exploring designer boutiques, savouring delicious pasta, and experiencing the magic of Swan Lake at the majestic Teatro alla Scala. I'm already planning my next visit – a perfect excuse for a new pink tutu and another round of Italian delicacies! Until next time, remember to keep dancing, stay positive, and spread the pink tutu love!

Emma signing off, xoxo

P.S. Don't forget to check out my new blog post next week, Monday, when I'll be back from Paris. Oh la la!
