Ciao bella! It's Emma here, your favourite Derbyshire-born ballerina blogger, bringing you a splash of pink from the streets of Milan, Italy! 🩰
This week has been a whirlwind of breathtaking performances, delicious Italian treats, and oh-so-chic shopping finds. It feels like Milan is breathing in colour and energy, and I'm happy to be a part of it. Let's get on with it, shall we?
A Day at La Scala
No trip to Milan is complete without a visit to La Scala, one of the world's most famous opera houses. The sheer grandeur of this building, both inside and out, left me speechless. This was no ordinary ballet class! I’m trying not to squeal but seeing my first ballet performance at La Scala was such a treat, the excitement and the grandeur! The ballet company danced with such skill, precision, and emotion. They brought tears to my eyes; it was truly magical.
The performance itself, a beautiful adaptation of "Swan Lake," was a stunning masterpiece. The swans gliding across the stage in their immaculate white tutus, the powerful movements of the prince, and the dramatic use of light and shadow. Honestly, I had goosebumps the whole time! I loved how it kept reminding me that all forms of ballet - from my everyday classes to professional performances - are incredible forms of art that should be celebrated!
Afterwards, I strolled through the picturesque Piazza della Scala, stopping for a quick photo op with the imposing statue of Leonardo da Vinci (you wouldn’t believe the perfect picture I got!). Milan's history and culture really does radiate in every corner of the city, I absolutely love it here!
The Pinkest Day in Milan!
A highlight of this week has been getting to know Milan's vibrant fashion scene! Yes, even when I'm not on a stage! From designer boutiques in the Quadrilatero della Moda to charming vintage shops, it's a dream for any fashion-lover like myself! 🛍️
I'm no stranger to the city of fashion but as I wandered down the cobbled streets, I couldn't help but feel the energy pulsating through every storefront and around every corner. Milan is a city where elegance is the everyday uniform.
Did you know I bought three incredible pink tutus? Yes, three! One a sparkling emerald green that caught the light like a disco ball, the second a crisp, classy pale pink with a shimmering iridescent lining and the third a stunning full-length black tutu with layers of black tulle and red feathers that make you want to prance and dance - oh, how I loved these purchases! These aren’t your ordinary tutus, no!
And while we’re on the subject, have you tried the delicious pastries at Pasticceria Marchesi? These little pink beauties are not just delicious, but a visual delight - think raspberry swirls, strawberry heart designs, pink meringues. They look too good to eat (though believe me, you’ll want to). I always try and pack in a bit of sightseeing around my sweet tooth, and the charming streets and grand buildings of this Italian city just add to the whole atmosphere. It's like stepping into a fairytale.
A Ballerina's Night Out
As any ballerina knows, after a long day of pirouettes, leaps, and perfecting our grand jetés, we deserve some downtime! And this week, that downtime meant a trip to the beautiful Teatro degli Arcimboldi.
It’s an absolute pleasure to watch young, budding talent on stage. The show was fantastic – modern, expressive and filled with all those elements I love about the elegance and joy of ballet. There's something so special about the energy and vibrancy that a new generation of dancers brings.
Afterwards, we found ourselves at a bustling bar for some drinks and laughter with some lovely locals. It’s fantastic to meet like-minded people from around the world and swap stories - we may all be from different corners of the world but when we're surrounded by great food and lovely company - it just all comes together, I feel right at home!
Travel Inspiration: Embracing the Tram
Milan's public transportation is a fantastic way to see the city and connect with the local spirit. While many tourists hop in a cab, I found myself taking full advantage of the iconic Milanese trams. 🚊
Riding the tram is such a captivating way to experience the heart and soul of Milan. It lets you relax, soak in the scenery, and even meet interesting locals, all while embracing the unique charm of this city. Plus, let’s be honest, a pink tutu in a bustling Italian city on the way to an exclusive show? What a way to make an entrance, wouldn’t you agree?!
The Pinkest Pink - Pink Tutu Blog
As a pink tutu wearing blogger, my love for this shade is unwavering, and this week was all about finding the perfect pink for me! From hot pink to blush pink, every shade is perfect, in its own way. The world of ballet is vibrant, colourful and it allows for self-expression - from our pink ballet shoes and tights, to tutus, all in the shade of pink that's best for us. There is something for every shade!
I’ve also started creating my own tutus, inspired by some of the most extraordinary designers, for an exclusive Pink Tutu collection. You'll be able to shop online soon – make sure you watch this space!
And finally, remember what I’m here to remind everyone: It’s time for the world to wear pink! Not only in ballet, but for everyday living! I'll keep inspiring you to wear your favourite shade of pink in every possible way - pink is not just a colour - it’s a symbol of joy and joy is the very essence of ballet. P.S. For my lovely blog readers, if you're visiting Milan any time soon, here are a couple of must-dos for a weekend in pink:
Must Do's in Milan
- The Duomo: It's an iconic landmark for good reason. Take a walk up to the top for breathtaking views over the city.
- Pink Martini at Teatro Dal Verme: Every Thursday evening from now through the end of summer, a jazz ensemble and vocalist named Pink Martini, known for their multilingual, playful songs and beautiful outfits are on.
- Sforza Castle: A truly magnificent historical site. It's worth exploring the inner courtyard and the surrounding park. It's also near the Tram Museum, where you can see a whole exhibition of restored Milanese trams.
- Dinner at * *Al Vapore:** Located on Via S. Tomaso 5, this charming ristorante has authentic cuisine. I always start with a bottle of Italian Prosecco, and have an artichoke heart salad, followed by a whole roasted fish - and it's best enjoyed in their beautiful garden on the evening!
