Hello my darlings! It's Emma here, back from a whirlwind adventure in Milan, Italy! As always, I've got so much to tell you, but first things first, can you believe it's already August? Where does the time go? Especially when you're having this much fun!
A Blast from the Past
You know me, I'm always chasing after those delightful ballet performances, and this week I stumbled upon something truly special. Remember how I told you I used to spend hours in the library back in Derbyshire, devouring ballet books and dreaming of dancing on grand stages? Well, this week, I felt like I was living one of those dreams!
I found myself at Teatro alla Scala, one of the most famous opera houses in the world! I'd always pictured myself attending a ballet there, but honestly, I never thought it would actually happen! It felt so surreal to be walking through those magnificent doors, the anticipation building with every step. This time, I didn't even have to wear a tutu for a performance. But oh darling, did I have one ready just in case! (There are some situations you just have to be prepared for!)
A Feast for the Senses
The performance I saw was "La Bayadère," which you may know as a beautiful classical ballet with an exciting, exotic feel. It transported me to India with its gorgeous costumes, colourful sets, and, of course, the incredibly graceful dancing. The performance was so captivating that I was totally swept away!
I spent a good hour afterwards just letting the magic sink in. But this was no ordinary "after-performance" experience. Instead, I found myself swept into the world of Milanese fashion! You can't go anywhere in this city without bumping into some truly exquisite window displays, and after a ballet at the Scala, the energy is electric. I felt completely inspired, and just had to take a stroll down via Montenapoleone, one of the most famous fashion streets in the world. There was something about that air of glamour, a feeling of exquisite artistry, which mirrored the performance at the Scala so beautifully.
Shopping Dreams
And oh my, what shops! From the sleek lines of Gucci to the quirky charm of independent boutiques, every shop window seemed to beckon me in. I may have treated myself to a few little treasures along the way. A pair of delicate earrings that sparkled with the brilliance of a hundred stars, and a satin scarf as soft as a whisper, that looked almost like it was made for a ballerina's choreographed swirls. Let's just say my pink tutu was thrilled with these additions to my wardrobe!
A Glimpse into Milan's Soul
After the fashion-filled flurry, I took a leisurely ride on one of Milan's famous trams. Now, I love nothing more than gliding through a new city by train. Something about the rumble of the wheels and the rhythmic click-clack of the track always sets me in a dreamy state. I love soaking up the everyday life of a place, from the friendly smiles of the locals to the quirky characters passing by. And Milan did not disappoint!
As I looked out the window, I was enchanted by the blend of old and new, of elegant grand buildings rubbing shoulders with trendy shops and buzzing cafes. Milan felt so alive, and you can just feel the passion in the air. The fashion, the food, the architecture, and most of all, the art! I couldn't resist the call of another famous theatre, this time a beautiful 19th-century structure called Teatro Dal Verme. It’s the venue for some truly innovative dance productions, and as luck would have it, there was a modern dance piece on the program for the week.
I’m still humming a melody from the performance, and can still see the fluid movements and evocative gestures, all presented within the stunning grandeur of the venue. I don’t always choose modern dance over the classic ballets I grew up on, but sometimes it is a delightful challenge, a completely different dance world that I thoroughly enjoyed. It left me feeling completely invigorated, a real tonic to my soul!
My Milan Mantra:
Speaking of tonic, I know some of you are wondering how I manage to travel so often and see so many shows, especially on a ballerina’s budget! Well, you know how it is. I live, breath, and dance ballet. So whenever possible, I earn extra by performing. It can mean dancing at events, special performances for businesses, or even teaching a few lessons now and again. I love my pink tutu - she works hard, but she always delivers, so there’s a little joy in that, too!
And that’s how I manage to make my way to beautiful cities like Milan and see shows at world-famous theatres. But it's not just the performances, it's also about connecting with the city’s energy, its atmosphere. There’s a magic that Milan holds, a certain “je ne sais quoi,” that's irresistible!
Pink Tutu Inspiration
Of course, I can’t come all this way without paying a little homage to my beloved city and all those fabulous pink tutu-wearing fashionistas! So you know I had to take a visit to a special shop on via Torino - the one I always rave about, full of stylish vintage clothes and dazzling accessories, perfect for adding some unique sparkle to your pink tutu outfits! Let’s just say I might have picked up a few more pieces for my wardrobe! It is always such a thrill to find beautiful items with a bit of history!
As I strolled back to my hotel, the vibrant colors of Milan danced before me, a mix of traditional terracotta and ochre against splashes of sunshine yellow, rich ruby red and of course, a whole host of beautiful pinks, of course!
Here’s to the joy of exploring a city's heart and discovering those moments that make your heart soar! I promise, you never need to wear a pink tutu to feel it!
Until next week, my darlings, keep those tutu dreams twirling,
Emma.
P.S. If you have any pink tutu style dilemmas or dream destinations to share, leave me a comment! I’m always up for some fashion inspiration and love to hear from you!
