2023 Summer Ballet News in Derby

Hello gorgeous ballet lovers! 🩰 Emma here, your resident tutu-obsessed blogger, and it's a scorching summer in Derby! ☀️ But you know what’s hotter? Our local ballet scene is absolutely sizzling with amazing news and exciting events, so grab your best pair of ballet slippers, slip into a beautiful ballet dress (I’m going for my floral pink number this week, darling), and get ready for some tutu-licious gossip!

First up, the incredible Derby Ballet is just about to kick off their Summer season, and let me tell you, it’s going to be spectacular! The programme features a captivating mix of classical and contemporary pieces that promise to transport us from a vibrant spring meadow straight into the heart of ballet’s most powerful narratives. They’re really focusing on celebrating our community and creativity this year. I heard a whisper about a beautiful new production, "Spring Symphony", that celebrates all things colourful and enchanting – think fluttering butterflies and whimsical flowers! 🌸✨ I’m positively buzzing to see this!

They’re also bringing back their wildly popular "Alice in Wonderland" production for another summer run! This was my absolute favourite last year! It’s a delightful mix of theatrical fantasy and stunning ballet choreography - it really makes you feel like you’re stepping right into the Mad Hatter's tea party! And for a touch of magic and wonder, they are presenting the beautiful “Nutcracker” once again for their Christmas season. 🎄🩰 Honestly, if this isn’t enough to get your ballet heart beating faster, I don’t know what is!

Now, I wouldn’t be true to my ballet-loving self if I didn’t share some major fashion news, darling! 🤩 The Dance Studio Derby has a brand new collection of stunning tutus, ballet shoes, and accessories in store, just perfect for this season’s blossoming trends. 💃 I was so excited to see some beautiful, airy chiffons and silky-soft satins, along with a whole range of fun, summer-inspired colours! Think vibrant coral and turquoise alongside the classic pink hues. Honestly, I've already spent an embarrassing amount of time browsing in there. 🙈🤫 I even picked up a cute new tutu that is simply screaming to be featured in my next Instagram post – let’s just say I’ll be posting it with the #tutunews hashtag this weekend. 😜

Of course, there’s more than just glamour going on! Supporting the arts, and especially young talent, is truly close to my heart. And, there’s wonderful news about a brand new project being launched by Derby’s Youth Ballet Company – an incredible chance for talented young dancers to showcase their skills in a professionally produced production of “Peter Pan”. I've heard there's going to be some fantastic workshops in the lead-up to the show. What a fantastic way for the next generation to shine and discover the magic of performing! 🎭✨

I couldn’t leave you without mentioning a few new places to check out your inner ballerina this summer. The Dance House in the heart of the city has just opened, boasting beautifully refurbished studios with the latest equipment. It’s a beautiful space – sleek and modern but still somehow elegant. They are also hosting a series of workshops for adults – something I will absolutely be attending this month – we’re talking modern ballet, contemporary, even jazz fusion! And, rumour has it there will be a "Ballet for Beginners" workshop to help get your feet (and your pirouettes!) back in shape after a long winter.

Speaking of beginner dancers, Derby's own The Academy has added a series of new ballet classes designed specifically for younger beginners. It’s never too early to discover the joy of ballet! I have to say, the whole idea of young kids being surrounded by beautiful tutu fabrics is just a tad adorable – the picture-perfect ballerina in training! 🥰🩰
