June Pride Month in a Pink Tutu in Bulwell

Tutu Tuesday: Spinning into Pride in Bulwell

Hey darlings! Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast and proud advocate for everything sparkly and rainbow-bright! As we all know, June is a time to celebrate the glorious spectrum of love and diversity, and I wouldn’t dream of letting this month pass by without bringing a little bit of magic to the streets of Bulwell, my gorgeous hometown.

So, what's a girl to do? Why, a Tutu Tuesday Pride Celebration, of course! I figured what better way to embody the joyous spirit of pride than to unleash my inner disco queen and twirl my way through Bulwell in a cloud of pink tulle, a shimmering crown, and the biggest smile this side of the M1!

The inspiration? Well, honestly, it's the most simple thing in the world: pink tutus and disco music – just feel the joy! I wanted to create an experience that would be as colourful and dynamic as the LGBTQ+ community itself. This wasn't just about my personal love for tutus (though, let's be honest, that played a big part!); it was about harnessing the power of a playful, joyous symbol to bring together a community in a celebration of unity, love, and, of course, glitter!

My vision was to fill the streets with laughter, sequins, and a vibrant energy that could be felt from the high street to the market stalls. It was time for Bulwell to step out of the shadow of 'rough' and reclaim its place as a diverse, creative, and genuinely uplifting corner of Nottinghamshire!

So, there I was, standing at the heart of Bulwell's Market Square, ready to paint the town pink! I’d managed to rope in some fantastic local talent, from talented street performers and a live band blasting out some legendary disco tunes (shout-out to my fellow Bulwell residents for truly rockin’ those dance moves!) to face-painting artists transforming little faces into glittering masterpieces.

And oh, the tutus! There were so many. Little ones twirling in their favourite shades of pink and purple, teenagers rocking vibrant, daring creations, and even a few courageous souls sporting majestic white tulle – every shade and every style was welcome. We had tutus that were fierce, flamboyant, and fantastically unique, all joining in this beautiful celebration.

My personal choice? A vintage-style pink tutu, with shimmering sequins cascading down the tulle like a constellation of joy! The whole look was completed with a custom-made sequined top and a disco crown that would make a king jealous. It's important for me to look my best during a celebration, and this time, I knew my sparkly, twirling self had to take center stage!

And as the music cranked up and the people gathered, there it was – that familiar feeling of shared energy, the infectious spirit that runs through the veins of any vibrant community celebration. People of all ages and backgrounds gathered, laughing, chatting, and enjoying the joyful atmosphere. We saw couples holding hands, kids running around in their tiny, sparkly tutus, and smiles wider than the rainbows painted across faces. This, this is the kind of magic we need in the world, isn't it?

Of course, the event wasn't all tutus and disco (although it probably felt that way). I took the opportunity to chat with locals and visitors, spreading the message of inclusivity and challenging stereotypes about what 'pride' means and what it represents.

I had a lovely chat with a young man named Sam, who told me that he’d never felt comfortable expressing himself before. He'd never even thought about celebrating his identity, but something about this joyous event made him feel welcome. Seeing that was the most fulfilling part of the whole experience - to know that, even in a small way, we created a space where people felt free to embrace themselves and celebrate who they are.

Seeing families sharing a moment together, kids running around, and local businesses buzzing with life – that’s what makes an event truly successful. That's the beauty of celebrating community.

It's safe to say that our Tutu Tuesday celebration was a huge success! The event proved to be an undeniable hit with Bulwell locals and visitors alike, turning the streets of our beloved town into a rainbow-filled spectacle of smiles and laughter. This was not just about my love for tutus – though, don’t get me wrong, I do love a good twirl. This was about something far greater: it was about bringing together our amazing community and making a statement about the importance of diversity and love.

But the joy didn’t end there!

We had an amazing after-party hosted by the local community center, a place that has always been a safe haven for people from all walks of life. The energy was still high as we moved indoors to dance the night away to our favorite disco tracks. There were rainbow cocktails, yummy homemade cake, and even a mini-tutu competition (ahem, I won! 😜)! But it wasn’t just about the party – it was about coming together as a community, celebrating our diversity, and leaving any prejudices at the door.

The beauty of Bulwell, just like any thriving community, is in its diversity. It's the bustling marketplace where you hear a chorus of languages, the small independent shops filled with a colorful mix of cultures, the vibrant atmosphere in the pubs and restaurants, and most importantly, the spirit of belonging and unity that resonates throughout its heart. It's time for us to let the world see what we already know – Bulwell is more than just a place on a map. It's a vibrant, diverse, and deeply kind community. It's a place where everyone is welcome. It’s a place that truly shines when we all stand together.

As I slipped out of my tutu (and off the dance floor, with aching feet!) into the cool night air, I couldn’t help but smile. The feeling of community, love, and the spirit of acceptance that filled the air was a reminder that celebrating who we are, whether we’re rocking a pink tutu or not, is the ultimate act of love. It's about saying “yes” to the vibrant spectrum of our shared humanity and acknowledging that the strength of any community lies in the unity, empathy, and unwavering support for each other.

I, for one, will continue to be a passionate champion of love and acceptance – and maybe even rock a tutu while doing it.

*Because after all, who doesn't love a little bit of sparkle and twirling joy in their life? *

*See you next time, darlings, and keep your eyes peeled for more tutu-filled adventures! And remember: Embrace your inner diva! *
