June Pride Month in a Pink Tutu in Gateshead

Gateshead Glistens with Tutu Pride

Itā€™s June, itā€™s Pride Month, and Gateshead is sparkling with all the joy, glitter and colour that the LGBTQ+ community brings. As a ballet dancer whoā€™s lived in the North East all my life, I'm constantly surrounded by creative spirits who've shown me the world beyond the traditional ā€œpinkā€ and ā€œblueā€ confines we're often told to fit into. I always said the only blue I like is the sky (well, thatā€™s a lie, turquoise and cobalt are pretty ace too) and, this month, that couldnā€™t be truer. In the heart of our historic town, surrounded by Victorian architecture and a sense of local history that warms your soul, something even more important is taking shape. We're reclaiming pride and proving that no matter where you come from or who you love, you belong! And what better way to express it than by spinning around in a fabulous, flamboyant tutu?!

This year, for Pride Month, I made a promise to myself: I was going to embrace the whole rainbow, and, importantly, to wear at least one pink tutu every single week in June! Honestly, if you saw me at Tesco the other day in my frilly pink concoction with a basket full of carrots, don't be shocked ā€“ Iā€™m spreading the love.

A tutu a day, keeps the rainbow away.

Of course, pink is just the start, don't get me wrong! There's a vibrant array of colours popping up across Gateshead: from rainbow flags adorning buildings to the iconic Pride colours splashed across our local arts spaces, we're drowning in rainbows, and I'm here for it!

It's the atmosphere that really makes Gateshead a shining beacon this June. From local cafes holding Drag Queen Brunch events to the vibrant rainbow parades that make the streets feel like a non-stop disco, every day is bursting with energy. You feel like youā€™re literally stepping into a vibrant, colourful world ā€“ and it's making a statement!

A Love Letter to Local Business

This yearā€™s Pride celebration has become much more than a parade or a month of fun. The whole cityā€™s thriving, and the sense of community is incredible. Local businesses are putting on their best, most inclusive face, and it's heart-warming! From bakeries with rainbow cupcakes and tea rooms holding Pride afternoon teas to clothing stores decked out in dazzling Pride colours and independent pubs hosting ā€œGlitter & Gayā€ nights, the love is everywhere!

My personal favourite find has to be ā€œRainbow Creationsā€ ā€“ this little vintage shop is exploding with the brightest rainbow outfits youā€™ve ever seen. Every time I step in there, I can practically hear Donna Summer singing "I Feel Love," which makes me want to twirl until I lose my balance ā€“ in a good way, of course!

Dancing with Joy

I canā€™t deny I've been channeling my inner diva all month. After all, it's a good day to be you! Whether it's the excitement of watching a live drag show at The Town Hall or laughing at funny stand-up comedians who always seem to know the right blend of humour and heart to keep the Pride crowds entertained, thereā€™s never a dull moment.

And then there are the parades. Oh, the parades. Every weekend in June has felt like a huge party for the whole city. From the moment you hear the first thumping beats of disco music, it's hard not to get carried away by the vibrant colours, joyful crowds and infectious spirit.

As I mentioned earlier, itā€™s all about spreading the love, and I have to say, the best part of all the Pride events in Gateshead is how open-armed the community feels. Whether youā€™re walking through the parade, dancing at a club, or simply chatting at a local cafe, thereā€™s this overwhelming sense of welcome. Itā€™s so lovely to see everyone come together, embracing each otherā€™s individuality, celebrating what makes each of us unique. It's just one big, happy family, ready to dance the night away!

A Month of Empowerment

Of course, Pride Month is about so much more than fun, fabulous outfits and good times. Itā€™s about celebrating our resilience and fighting for equal rights for all. Itā€™s about the tireless work that countless people do throughout the year to break down barriers, to promote understanding, to combat hate and discrimination. Itā€™s about raising awareness of the issues LGBTQ+ communities continue to face across the globe.

But this year, thereā€™s a distinct shift in how Pride is being celebrated in Gateshead. Weā€™ve reached a stage where the community is empowered and embracing itself, but thereā€™s also this inspiring element of supporting others ā€“ local initiatives that are working tirelessly to build bridges between diverse communities, to empower young LGBTQ+ individuals, and to offer a space for open dialogue.

It's refreshing, heartwarming, and so very fitting that Gateshead is making its mark in such a positive way. And honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. We are diverse, we are strong, and we are proudly marching to our own beat ā€“ and itā€™s going to be a groovy journey, all the way!

Tutu Tuesday Takeover

To get in the mood for the rest of Pride, and to support this amazing movement, Iā€™m launching #TutuTuesday, a movement to embrace your individuality, your fun and most importantly, your unique fabulous self, in a fabulous tutu. Donā€™t forget to share your looks on social media!

Don't just take my word for it, though! Head down to Gateshead in June ā€“ youā€™ll understand why we say it's a special place! Itā€™s where the spirit of Pride shines so bright. So whether youā€™re wearing a tutu or not (although Iā€™d recommend it!) we're ready to welcome you with open arms.

Don't forget to #tututuesday and #tutupride to show us what youā€™ve got! Letā€™s spread that joy far and wide.

See you at the disco!
