Harrogate: A Tutu-ful Pride Celebration!
It’s June, the sun is shining, and the air is thick with the joyous buzz of a thousand conversations. Today is Pride day in Harrogate, and as a lifelong lover of all things pink and fabulous, I simply couldn't resist throwing on my best, glittery, bubblegum pink tutu and joining the vibrant parade. It’s no surprise that Harrogate is becoming known for its progressive and welcoming atmosphere, but seeing this sea of rainbows and laughter was truly a sight to behold.
The day kicked off with a bang at the impressive Valley Gardens, the energy radiating as loud and proud as the disco tunes blasting from the DJ booth. Now, anyone who knows me, knows I’m a massive fan of all things disco – I mean, what’s more fun than dancing the night away in a feather boa and sequins? I’d spotted the stage decorated with a magnificent rainbow banner and knew that the rest of the day would be a non-stop extravaganza. The atmosphere was electric – I was overwhelmed with a sense of love and camaraderie, surrounded by people celebrating love in all its glorious forms.
The first thing that caught my eye were the vibrant rainbow flags flapping in the breeze, like a beacon of inclusivity against the brilliant blue sky. Honestly, even though I'm used to seeing these symbols of acceptance around, it never fails to warm my heart. Next came the sheer scale of the event: people of all ages, from every walk of life, had gathered together for this one day of unadulterated joy. Young couples were sharing smooches under the watchful gaze of a dazzling glitter cannon, while older generations were joining the vibrant conga line, beaming with pure delight.
But it wasn’t just about the joy; there was a potent undercurrent of activism and community here. There were information stalls galore, educating people about LGBTQ+ issues and providing invaluable resources for those who may need them. I spent some time chatting with a volunteer from Stonewall who was passionate about promoting trans rights. Honestly, it’s these conversations that really resonate with me. Pride is more than just a celebration, it's about continuing the fight for equality and fostering a more inclusive world. I even had the chance to sign a petition for same-sex marriage equality in countries where it’s not yet legally recognised - something that deeply touched me.
As the sun started its descent, casting long shadows over the crowds, the parade itself began. It was truly an awe-inspiring sight. Imagine: a kaleidoscope of colours, sounds, and laughter winding through the streets. You had families walking hand-in-hand with their children, each with their own message of hope. You had individuals boldly expressing their personal stories through handcrafted banners and dazzling outfits. I even spotted a drag queen perched precariously on a giant unicorn float – an image that instantly brought a smile to my face. There were musicians, dancers, performers of all sorts – and then there was the endless stream of rainbow flags held high, each fluttering with the power of shared hope and belonging.
The energy of the parade was palpable - even as an onlooker, I couldn’t resist swaying my hips to the catchy beats that pulsed from the various floats. It was a testament to the enduring power of unity. But my absolute favourite part of the parade was, without a doubt, the “Queer Choir” that followed us down the street, their voices echoing the message of “Love is Love” - sending shivers down my spine and making my eyes well up.
The day culminated in a spectacular firework display against the velvety canvas of the twilight sky. Fireworks are always dazzling, but against the backdrop of such a positive event, it felt more than just an explosion of colour - it symbolised the ever-expanding spirit of pride, a statement of defiance and love, bursting outwards like the flames from each fiery burst.
Pride in Harrogate was about much more than rainbows and glitter – it was about bringing together individuals who have been silenced for too long and celebrating their unique stories. From the heartfelt conversations at the info booths to the electrifying performances on the main stage, every element was infused with the magic of shared human connection. And as I sat on a bench in Valley Gardens, taking it all in, I knew that this was a day I would treasure. It wasn't just a festival; it was a powerful statement, a bold proclamation that Harrogate embraces love in all its colours and forms. And in that, I found a profound sense of belonging – something I’ll carry with me far beyond the last sparkle of the fireworks.
And what better way to end this article than to say, “Don’t be afraid to show your colours! It’s June, and that means Pride!” I encourage you to find your own way to celebrate - whether that's attending a local event, spreading awareness online, or simply having an open and loving conversation with someone who may need a kind word. Every action, however big or small, helps make a difference!

Rainbow Feathers & Frills: This one is perfect for those who love to go all out. Think a full-body, glitter-covered jumpsuit with feathers and layers of ruffles cascading down the arms. A bright-red lipstick and a fluffy rainbow feather boa would add an extra touch of panache.
Disco Ball Delight: This outfit is guaranteed to turn heads. It involves a body-hugging, shimmering disco ball-effect dress, matching platform boots, and, of course, a crown of shimmering rhinestones. Don't forget your mirrored sunglasses to complete the look.
Simple yet Elegant: Some people prefer a classic and sophisticated approach. Opt for a flowing, pastel-colored dress with delicate floral embroidery. Pair it with a simple but bold statement necklace, a flower crown, and elegant, silver strappy sandals for a truly sophisticated look.
Glitz & Glam in a Tutu: And last, but certainly not least, there’s my favourite go-to outfit for pride celebrations: a fluffy, pink tutu paired with a classic black or white top (try a white crop top to make it extra fun!) Add a vibrant statement piece, a sparkly rainbow clutch bag, and some colorful fishnet stockings.
Don't forget to wear your pride with a smile, because in the words of my favourite disco diva, Gloria Gaynor: “I will survive! I will survive!”
