June Pride Month in a Pink Tutu in Portsmouth

Portsmouth Pride: Tutus, Disco Balls and a Rainbow of Joy

#tututuesday #tutupride

Hello gorgeous peeps! It’s Emma here, your resident ballet buff and proud member of the pink tutu brigade!

So, it's June, and you know what that means? Pride Month! The time for celebrating the fabulous rainbow spectrum of our LGBTQ+ community and everything wonderful about who we are. And let's face it, we're a pretty sparkly bunch. This year, Portsmouth has gone all out with their celebrations, and I’m not just talking about the epic glitter cannon they used during the parade (though, seriously, who wouldn't love a good sprinkle of rainbow sparkles? It's like a metaphor for life!).

This year, I decided to bring my own brand of fabulousness to Pride. After all, what better way to celebrate our diverse community than with a magnificent pink tutu? Trust me, the vibrant hues of a perfectly pleated pink tutu against a background of Pride flags, joyous laughter, and beaming smiles? It's a sensory symphony!

As a professional ballerina, I find my own way of expressing individuality within the structured world of dance. We may be bound by a certain elegance of movements and an artistic vision set out for us by choreographers, but the costumes we wear allow us to become something new, something bigger, bolder, and, yes, even brighter than we are in our day-to-day lives. A tutu, my dears, can truly transform a person, allowing us to embrace a different facet of our personality. This June, my tutu was an outward expression of my own pride, a beacon of my own LGBTQ+ journey.

Portsmouth, the heart of Hampshire, knows how to throw a party! This year’s celebrations felt even more potent than usual. From the incredible energy of the main parade, filled with vibrant floats and a constant chorus of joyous chants, to the lively atmosphere of the after-parties that had everyone moving their bodies in sync with disco rhythms (I personally spun so hard that I briefly worried about ending up in the River Solent!), there was a palpable joy and acceptance that radiated through every nook and cranny of the city.

I love the sense of camaraderie, the way everyone embraces the freedom to be whoever they are without fear of judgement. Portsmouth Pride is not just a day of parades and parties, but a poignant reminder that our world is richer and brighter because we allow ourselves and each other the space to bloom with our truest colours.

My heart felt full witnessing the beautiful smiles of the LGBTQ+ community, and it was clear that Portsmouth had embraced this event with open arms and even more open hearts. And you know what? My tutu was a hit! I got countless high fives, a few "fabulous" exclamations, and a generous sprinkle of confetti in my hair – all perfect proof that Portsmouth has a very particular type of sparkle to its personality!

The whole experience has fuelled a renewed sense of hope and excitement for me. It reminded me that Pride isn’t just a single event, but a constant journey towards creating a world where everyone feels free and accepted. A world where, even amidst the diverse expressions of identity, we are united by our shared humanity and desire for love, kindness, and the undeniable power of a pink tutu.

I have to confess that this pink tutu has become more than just an accessory for me. It’s a symbol of liberation, of defying expectations, and most importantly, of finding the courage to shine. If a tutu can evoke this sense of joyful expression, imagine what our whole community can achieve together!

Portsmouth Pride was not just about pink tutus, but also about creating a safe space for our diverse community. It was about the joyous echoes of laughter as the LGBTQ+ youth, so brave and bright, paraded in their full colours, knowing they were seen, loved, and supported.

My heart overflowed with pride as I watched the youngest generation embracing their truth, marching through the city centre with their vibrant costumes and infectious energy, their steps echoing the message: We are here, we are proud, and we are ready to dance! I think they knew, instinctively, the profound connection between expressing ourselves through our clothes and the way it fuels our personal evolution and liberation.

For me, the experience has been deeply personal. Not only has Portsmouth Pride given me the chance to embrace my passion for pink and twirl around in my beloved tutu, but it has reminded me that the greatest form of pride is found in being exactly who we are, regardless of anyone else's opinion.

As a ballet dancer and an LGBTQ+ advocate, I find my voice through a beautiful symphony of movements, colourful costumes, and bold pronouncements. My pink tutu, for one afternoon, became more than just a fashion statement; it was a symbol of unity, a message of acceptance, and a reminder that love knows no bounds, and the sparkle of individuality shines brighter when we choose to dance together, hand in hand, towards a more vibrant future.

Remember, babes, we can make a difference in the world through little acts of kindness, of self-expression, of showing our support for a community we deeply love. And yes, even with a touch of pink and a perfectly twirling tutu!
