A Tutu-tastic Time in the Eternal City!
By Emma, Your Friendly Neighbourhood Tutu Enthusiast
Hello darlings! It’s your girl, Emma, back with another exciting update from my fabulously flamboyant life! This time, I’m bringing you a kaleidoscope of sunshine and sass directly from the heart of Rome – the city that stole my heart, one ancient colosseum and creamy gelato at a time.
As you all know, June is Pride Month, and I'm always on a mission to spread the rainbow cheer. So, naturally, I was absolutely buzzing to get to Rome for a vibrant week of celebrations!
Now, you all know my weakness is a good ol' pink tutu, so obviously, my first stop in the eternal city had to be a spectacular shopping spree. Finding a tutu in Rome was like finding a needle in a haystack… except this haystack was full of beautiful silk and shimmering sequins. Let’s just say my wardrobe got a very flamboyant makeover.
It felt so right to be strutting around Rome, my pink tulle billowing behind me, and honestly, the locals seemed to love it too. They'd smile, wave, even take photos. My inner child was doing cartwheels – okay, not literally in the 12-inch heels I'd chosen to compliment my tutu, but you get the idea.
But the real magic kicked off at the main Pride parade. I’ve seen parades all over the world, but this one had a special spark – it was electric! The energy was palpable. Imagine thousands of people united in a kaleidoscope of colours, joy, and acceptance, all twirling, dancing, and radiating pure joy – it was magical!
I felt like I was part of a disco party straight out of Studio 54 – a mix of colourful feather boas, sequins, and platforms galore! It felt incredible to be surrounded by so many people, young and old, from all walks of life, united by their passion for LGBTQ+ equality and self-expression.
As a ballerina, I’ve always believed in the power of dance to communicate emotions and unite people, and Rome’s Pride parade felt like the epitome of this. There were dance troupes of every flavour imaginable, twirling and jumping, bringing their hearts to the beat of freedom. I even spotted a fabulous drag queen doing splits in a bedazzled feather headdress! You'd have to have been blind to not feel the positive energy radiating from the streets!
My favourite moment, though, was a sweet older couple holding hands. They’d been together for decades, and their love story had survived decades of stigma and discrimination. They told me about their struggle to be themselves, the years they hid their love, and the years they had to fight for the right to be together. Their faces glowed with the love that could finally be shown without fear. It was heartwarming and a powerful reminder of the long road to acceptance.
Later, we enjoyed the music and lights at a legendary Pride club night. Let’s just say glitter and dancing are my second and third loves after pink tutus, so I danced until my legs screamed. The DJ played an epic mix of disco, house, and pop music – exactly the type of tunes to set any party on fire.
During the week, I also found time to delve into the city's history. A true renaissance lover, I marvelled at the beauty of the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and Trevi Fountain – all while wearing my pink tutu, of course! Even the most traditional of Roman sights couldn't resist the playful touch of tulle.
One thing I quickly learnt about Roman Pride – it’s not just about dancing and partying. It’s about having a powerful voice. We were celebrating progress and celebrating the hard work that countless people have put in to fighting for the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals.
And that’s exactly the message that I’m trying to bring home – it's never enough to just talk about inclusivity, we must actively champion it! Wear your pride loud and proud! And yes, that may involve a fabulously pink tutu in the centre of Rome. 😉
It's a bit of a cliché, but I genuinely feel like I left a piece of my heart in Rome – the city’s beauty, history, and warmth all mixed in with the infectious energy of Pride. And to top it all off? I met some truly wonderful people who shared the same values of equality, acceptance, and joy. It’s safe to say I had the time of my life.
So, here’s to spreading the rainbow cheer and celebrating our diversity! And here’s to every opportunity to twirl, strut, and shout about it.
And a little tip for those who haven't been to Rome – if you are considering visiting, Pride Month is the perfect time. You won’t regret it. Ciao, bella!
