Wrecsam Rocks the Tutu: Pride, Pink & Disco Fever!
It’s June, and that means one thing: it’s time to dust off your glitter, grab your best feather boa, and prepare to celebrate Pride! And what better way to mark this joyous occasion than by twirling around in a pink tutu? As a dancer and a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, I’m a firm believer that the best way to express yourself is through the power of movement, colour, and sheer joyous abandon.
This year, I’m taking the pink tutu celebration to the streets of Wrecsam, a town bursting with pride and vibrant energy. From the bustling market squares to the historic streets lined with colourful pubs, the atmosphere here is infectious. It’s clear that Wrecsam embraces diversity, a sentiment I fully embrace, as evidenced by my personal choice of attire for this Pride Month - my gorgeous hot pink tutu.
Okay, before we dive into the pink extravaganza, let me rewind a little. You see, it all started with #Tutuesday, a whimsical movement I launched last year. I firmly believe that life's too short to wear boring clothes, and tutus are a statement. Imagine a day filled with sparkle, twirls, and laughter – that's #Tutuesday! It's a day for empowerment and self-expression where everyone is encouraged to channel their inner ballerina, whether they’ve actually worn a tutu before or not!
This year, however, I decided to up the ante. The colour of this month, and the colour of the LGBTQ+ flag – pink – felt like a perfect marriage to the #Tutuesday movement. This led to a brand new twist on the #Tutuesday hashtag: #TutuPride. Now, I'm not only encouraging everyone to wear tutus but I’m specifically championing the bright, bold, and celebratory pink tutus!
Wrecsam embraced #TutuPride with open arms. Everywhere you turn, there's a burst of pink! The cafe across the street is offering rainbow cupcakes (all decorated with mini pink tutus), the pub on the corner has pink feather boas on offer for everyone entering, and a local dance studio is holding a “Tutus and Disco Fever” class for those wanting to hone their twirling skills before the evening’s festivities. It’s truly a joyous sight to see – people from all walks of life, embracing the playful spirit of #TutuPride.
As I explore the town, the buzz is palpable. There’s a group of young girls having a fierce tutu dance-off in the park, a group of lads strutting in pink feather boas and oversized shades, a couple sharing a laugh while wearing matching pink tutus – it’s pure joy.
It's not just about tutus, of course. It’s about celebrating inclusion, acceptance, and love in all its forms. It’s about seeing people express their authentic selves, loud and proud. Wrecsam has embraced this spirit with a sense of camaraderie that’s heartwarming.
One of my favorite moments is watching a group of older ladies in a pub garden doing a synchronised tutudance to a 70s disco classic. I swear, the dance floor shook! It was a joyful moment of shared laughter and pure liberation - the embodiment of #TutuPride.
As the afternoon wears on, we're all converging at the Pride festival, held in the heart of the town. A stage has been erected, decorated with colorful streamers and pink and white balloons. It’s a sight to behold, especially under the golden light of the setting sun.
We’ve all gathered, ready to dance, sing, and celebrate Pride. The first song explodes, a classic disco anthem. As I hit the dance floor, I can't help but grin. It feels magical to be surrounded by so many people embracing the joyous spirit of #TutuPride. We twirl and shimmy, we laugh, and we connect.
There's a vibrant sense of community here, one that makes me incredibly proud to be part of the LGBTQ+ family, and proud to call Wrecsam my temporary home. We're not just celebrating Pride - we're embracing the vibrant, unique, and downright fabulous in each and every one of us!
And I've got a feeling that the #TutuPride movement has only just begun. There's something about putting on a tutu that gives you the power to take on the world. So next June, wherever you are, dust off your glitter, grab a pink tutu, and get ready to shine your brightest light. After all, we've only got one life, so we might as well dance and twirl in joy!
