My Top 5 Ballet Music Selections for 26th October
1. Swan Lake by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky:
- Okay, so it’s cliché, I know, but darling, how can you not include this iconic masterpiece in any top-five list? Swan Lake’s melodies are some of the most enchanting in all of classical music. From the mournful, haunting cello themes representing the lonely plight of the swan princess, Odette, to the jubilant and celebratory violin themes during the triumphant dance of her dark alter ego, Odile, every chord is pure poetry. This score tells the story with a symphony of sounds, bringing both despair and love, and weaving it into an emotional rollercoaster that tugs at the heartstrings of every audience member. Even those who think they don’t like ballet music are simply hypnotized by the sweeping crescendos and dramatic tempos, allowing them to lose themselves in its evocative landscape of dreams, romance, and betrayal.
- Just as the graceful ballet movements, Swan Lake is also a masterpiece in the way Tchaikovsky has played with contrasting themes. You can feel every ripple of emotion within the characters’ hearts. There’s this duality throughout the entire score, as the swan queen transforms from a vulnerable, fragile creature to a vengeful and empowered sorceress! The music really makes the performance so powerful. The use of cellos in Odette’s melancholy movements, the lighthearted violins to highlight the carefree personality of Odile, the grand fanfare during the triumphant battles, all interwoven to give depth to the performance. It’s almost like Tchaikovsky is speaking directly to the audience, letting us experience all the facets of love, hope, despair, and redemption through the magnificent language of music! It's impossible to resist!
2. The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky:
- Now darling, prepare to be both challenged and captivated with The Rite of Spring! Unlike the grand Romantic symphonies that ballet is known for, Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring took the ballet world by storm when it premiered. Its powerful, innovative, and utterly radical composition shattered the musical norms of its time. Don't worry if you don't fully understand what is happening; you are supposed to feel disorientated, unsure, a little uncomfortable even. This is the beauty of Stravinsky's genius!
- Imagine the music as a series of sonic eruptions – a primal, almost jarring exploration of rhythmic power, echoing ancient rituals, fertility rites, and the sacrifice of the chosen maiden. You’ll feel a tension building as each note reverberates and transforms. Even those who consider themselves non-dance fans are captivated by the force of the music’s primal rhythms. With a rhythmic structure based on shifting patterns and the repeated use of irregularity and repetition, Stravinsky crafted a soundscape that captures the untamed forces of nature, the cyclical dance of life and death, and the raw, powerful emotions that lie at the core of the human experience! It's a symphony that’s almost shocking in its beauty - think wild horses on the run and untamed winds!
3. Sleeping Beauty by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
- Back to the more familiar, here's Sleeping Beauty. It's a perfect choice for this ballet music day! Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty is the epitome of elegance and refinement. From the opening bars of the waltz that captures the heart of the Sleeping Beauty kingdom, we're instantly whisked away into a world of fairytale enchantment, a magical land with cascading melodic beauty, grand waltzes, graceful harmonies, and moments of dramatic intensity.
- This score takes us on a romantic odyssey from the enchanting forest scenes to the ethereal kingdom where Princess Aurora is awoken from her slumber by a handsome prince’s kiss.
4. Giselle by Adolphe Adam
- Adolphe Adam's Giselle is a tale of forbidden love, sacrifice, and remorse – a heart-wrenching, poignant ballet set against the backdrop of romanticism, where emotions are raw, love is passionate, and betrayal feels deep.
- The ethereal music sets the perfect atmosphere for this powerful love story. Every note echoes the heartache, despair, and passionate yearning that propel Giselle’s actions. In a sense, Giselle, is one of the great early ballerinas' “tragic” stories – those classic loves and stories that we still love to see, read, and dance. I always imagine how the ballerina who plays Giselle is simply radiating the pain, the confusion, the rage of such a dramatic and sad storyline!
5. Romeo and Juliet by Sergei Prokofiev
- Now, if we’re going to discuss the top ballet scores that just take your breath away, then how can we not mention the score of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet? The composer takes the age-old tragic tale of Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers and crafts a sonically beautiful piece that mirrors their tempestuous love story. Every melody becomes a testament to the power of love, fate, and sacrifice!
- With themes of fierce love and passion interwoven with dark tension, Romeo and Juliet's music feels raw and captivating, reminding us of the timeless tragedy that plays out on stage! This is another ballet music masterpiece that truly embraces the classic Romantic ballet era. You can just hear the dramatic tempos in the choreography, just waiting for that tragic ending! The intensity of the drama is matched by the intensity of the music. Oh dear, it just breaks my heart, but there’s no other music that could express this story in quite the same way. The intensity is perfectly woven in each note. There are some fantastic parts of the music that also express joy and youthful love - but ultimately the piece is a triumph of dark, dark, passion!
