My dears, what a day to talk about the magic of music, specifically the soundtracks of our very own enchanting ballet. I must tell you all - 19th March 2024. Remember that date, darling. It's a day when we'll feel the twirl in our souls and the elegance in our movements even while sitting at our desks, teacups delicately held in hand, perhaps a petit four or two gracing the plate beside us, just waiting to be nibbled on during this fascinating exploration of the artistry that is music for ballet.
You see, dears, the music for a ballet, that is where the magic really starts. It is the foundation, the whispering secret that informs every step, every leap, every single movement of those exquisite dancers. We get lost in the choreography, but don't forget, the music tells the story. It's a tale in every measure, in every key change. Of course, we all know Tchaikovsky, that darling! 'Swan Lake', 'Sleeping Beauty' and my absolute favourite 'The Nutcracker'. And don't even get me started on his magnificent overtures! It's pure magic. And Stravinsky? Well, his music for 'The Rite of Spring' was a sensation, not only for its groundbreaking composition, but for how it ignited a storm within the theatre! Simply exhilarating. We must mention Prokofiev for 'Romeo and Juliet', which adds such romantic depths to the tale. I could listen to the music to this ballet forever! Oh my, just hearing the names of these extraordinary composers and their music evokes such emotion, it sets the stage ablaze, don't you agree?
Today is the day to go back and reminisce, to celebrate those legendary ballet composers who, as it were, became the choreographers of our ears.

Each emotion is captured through musical themes and the overall journey of the ballet is conveyed via changes of rhythm, tempo, dynamics and melodic motifs.

This is how we experience the music through movement. Through the beautiful steps and leaps, and with the exquisite movement of our elegant dancers. The dance takes form through the sound. Let's face it - this type of music allows for endless potential in the choreography, how each movement interprets and speaks to the beauty and drama inherent in the score! And if there are multiple musicians playing in the pit during a ballet? Imagine the layers that sound adds! My goodness! I simply love it!
