As the twinkling lights of the theatre shimmered, and the air crackled with anticipation, a hushed excitement descended upon the audience. Tonight, wasn't just about the dance; tonight, was a symphony of emotion painted through music. And I, a devotee to the enchanting art of ballet, was swept away by the tide of sound, and the graceful bodies that seemed to rise, pirouette, and soar as one with it. It is on this very day, 11 December 2023, that I shall indulge my love for ballet music by reviewing the world of ballet music - a world where emotion is expressed through the notes, where rhythm becomes an echo of the heartbeat, and where stories are whispered on the breeze of the orchestra.
Ah, ballet music, a world so wondrously enchanting! How I adore the exquisite dialogue between the dance and the orchestra! A choreographer's vision takes shape through the magical tapestry of the music. The crescendo builds with the intensity of a leap, a diminuendo caresses a softly executed arabesque. With each note, with every intricate pause, a feeling, an emotion, a story is spun. From the grandeur of Tchaikovsky's _Swan Lake_ to the melancholic beauty of Debussy's _La Mer_, ballet music can be ethereal and ethereal, joyous and profound, heart-wrenching and heart-soaring. But how, dear readers, to capture its essence within these pages, to convey the magic and the mystique that binds us to this world of beauty, grace, and emotion? Where do we begin to explore its captivating tapestry, its fascinating history, and its captivating evolution?
Today, I embark on a whimsical journey to examine the current landscape of ballet music and to explore what excites and inspires. A voyage into the hearts and minds of the composers, choreographers, and dancers who bring the ballet music world alive. This world, like ballet itself, demands artistry, precision, and a delicate balance between traditional and innovative.
Let us begin with a discussion of a very captivating, and very special ballet: _The Nutcracker_ . Who could ever forget the sheer delight of Tchaikovsky's music as Clara ventures into the Land of Sweets, her world transformed through the magic of music and a charming Prince in a Nutcracker shell? _The Nutcracker_, with its heartwarming narrative and whimsical score, is truly the quintessential holiday ballet. But _The Nutcracker_ isn't simply nostalgia; it is a timeless work that resonates across generations, showcasing the power of the story, music, and choreography to transport us to another world, full of fairy tales and whimsical wonders.
Yet ballet is so much more than just classic works; it is a vibrant world in constant motion. Today, we have a wonderful blending of old and new, where innovation co-exists with tradition. New voices, emerging and established, bring fresh interpretations to ballet and infuse the stage with innovative rhythms and harmonies. Contemporary composers are delving into the emotional depths of modern ballet, pushing the boundaries of dance with unique soundscapes and groundbreaking rhythms.
For those wanting a delightful juxtaposition of old and new, the London Contemporary Ballet is certainly the company to check out. In recent years they have captivated audiences with their powerful productions, often incorporating music by renowned contemporary composers. It’s a thrilling dance of styles, where the raw emotion of dance meets a thrilling soundscape.
Speaking of innovative and fresh, there is a definite focus on storytelling. Music is being utilised to forge deeply personal narratives. One of the key themes emerging is the use of electronic music and the fusion of genres to create new expressions of movement and sound.
One of the leading exponents of contemporary ballet music, and its fascinating cross-pollination of genres, is the Royal Ballet’s own, Joby Talbot. Joby is a true visionary. He has blended electronica and modern composition with classical structure and an impressive awareness of ballet's history, with each movement mirroring the emotion and physicality of the dance.
Of course, music that has been a true companion to the ballet world since the 17th century are the compositions by the great Baroque composers, notably Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, and Corelli. Baroque music with its impeccable structure, elegance and grandeur, lends itself admirably to dance.
Now, speaking of fashion and music, could you ever imagine dancing to _Giselle_ in a dazzlingly bright green tutu? Not likely, no? There are sartorial rules in the world of ballet, as immutable as any of the choreographic norms. Ballet costumes, from the iconic tutus to the equally glamorous leotards and tights, are all designed to work with and showcase the beauty and artistry of the dance. For instance, what do we see as the perfect garment for an elegant _Swan Lake_ ballerina? A majestic, pristine, white tutu. The music calls for such, does it not?
Let us discuss a key sartorial element: the ballet leotard. The leotard. Essential, beautiful, versatile! There is no end to leotard combinations in the world of ballet, and thankfully there are no real fashion faux pas! I’m rather partial to leotards made with breathable, luxurious fabrics. They look lovely and move freely and with the graceful dancer. It should hug the figure to allow for elegant transitions and flowing movements. It should also be incredibly comfortable. It goes without saying that leotards come in an astonishing array of colours. What is perhaps less obvious, is how the colour choice can complement the overall mood and emotion of the ballet. If we were performing a contemporary ballet featuring a particularly lyrical and flowing sequence, I would personally prefer a rich, decadent amethyst purple leotard with subtle silver shimmer that is designed to capture the light. On the other hand, a strong crimson red would suit a vibrant piece with sharp, dynamic movement sequences. There are even leotards with stunning embroidered patterns.
And the tutu. How delightful a design, that has evolved from simple to spectacular in such an array of colours, layers, and fabrics, each with its own style, texture and volume.
What we wear can enhance a performance and reflect the character that the dancers bring to life on stage. Think about it – there is no end of options, an array of sartorial treasures waiting to enhance every kind of performance and bring its story, its theme and its message to the world. The artistry of ballet extends not only to the dancer's physical form, but also the way in which they dress!
When we watch ballet, we witness artistry at its most refined. From the grace of every single step, to the elegance of each movement, we witness the exquisite symphony of emotion, music and performance. Let us celebrate the unique language that binds us all to this magical world of music, and dance, a world of joy, beauty, and timeless expression.
