Ah, December, that most magical of months! The air is crisp, the lights twinkle, and there's a certain sparkle in the air - much like the glitter on a dancer's tutu! And for me, a ballet devotee, this month always stirs a particular kind of anticipation. For it's the time when the world's finest ballet companies begin their festive performances, bringing with them an enchanting blend of music, movement, and emotion.
As I sit here, enveloped in the aroma of warming gingerbread and the comforting crackle of a log fire, I can't help but let my thoughts wander to those majestic stages. I imagine the hushed audience, the dimming lights, and then, that glorious moment when the curtain rises to reveal the ballet dancers, graceful and ethereal in their swirling tutus and shimmering leotards. Each pirouette, each grand jeté, is a symphony of elegance, precision, and storytelling. But it's the music, my dears, that truly brings it all to life!
For it is the music that fuels the dancer's every movement, guiding their every step and breathing life into their emotional journey. The ethereal strains of Tchaikovsky, the poignant melodies of Prokofiev, and the fiery rhythms of Stravinsky all combine to paint an auditory tapestry that is both mesmerizing and deeply affecting.
This December, we celebrate the enchanting world of ballet music and explore some of the most compelling works:- The Nutcracker: Let's face it, this festive masterpiece has captured our hearts and ignited our imaginations for over a century. It's impossible to resist the captivating sounds of Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", "Waltz of the Flowers", and "March of the Wooden Soldiers." And, let's not forget the beautiful, iconic "Arabian Dance." It transports us to a fantastical land of sugarplum dreams, and its iconic melodies are truly unforgettable!
And as the Nutcracker Prince, with his handsome costume and confident moves, dances across the stage, there’s a thrill of magic. For a moment, everything is possible in that fantastical realm. Each year, as I see that Christmas tree swell with glittering gifts and hear those iconic melodies, it brings back so many happy childhood memories!
And the dancers - oh my, the dancers! From the delicate elegance of Clara, to the strength of the Sugar Plum Fairy, to the comical silliness of the Rat King. It’s like a stage full of childhood dreams given life!
- Swan Lake: It is simply breathtaking. With its hauntingly beautiful score by Tchaikovsky, Swan Lake transports us to a world of ethereal beauty, dark secrets, and forbidden love. Each note of "The Dance of the Little Swans" speaks of innocence, the graceful strains of "Odette's Theme" whisper of her sorrow and longing, and the dramatic "Black Swan" sequence is charged with power and intensity.
And then there's the incredible feat of the choreography, capturing both the delicate beauty of the swans and the tempestuous, darker heart of the black swan. Oh, the passion of the dance!
We, as the audience, get sucked into this narrative of tragedy and hope.
- Sleeping Beauty: The fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty, made famous by the iconic ballet by Tchaikovsky, features many delightful dance pieces - and some challenging for dancers, too! The beautiful “Waltz” (especially the second one - wow!), “The Lilac Fairy’s” beautiful, magical entrance, and the ever-delightful (if also challenging!) “Rose Adagio” are pure enchantment for every ballet enthusiast. I must confess that each time I hear the haunting music and see the Lilac Fairy descend gracefully to the stage, it still gives me chills!
And, if I ever do manage to make it to the Paris Opera House and watch them perform “The Rose Adagio”…. Well, that’s pure fantasy!
- Giselle: Set in 19th-century Germany, Giselle, the romantic ballet of love, madness, and death, has been performed in different variations and styles since it first took the stage, but it’s remained an immensely popular classic. Its score, written by Adolphe Adam, evokes all the feelings that we find in the dramatic story: love, despair, betrayal, and finally, forgiveness.
As the innocent peasant girl, Giselle, and the young man she loves are caught in the web of her madness after she is betrayed, the music brings to life all the pain and grief - the heartbreaking "Mad Scene" - with powerful melodies, moving harmonies, and driving rhythms, making it a dramatic, compelling, and enduringly moving work. The choreography matches that emotional range, moving us from tender grace to dramatic pathos. And that haunting ending… wow!
- Don Quixote: What a feast of color, dance, and comedy this ballet offers! With a score by Ludwig Minkus, the vibrant story and music transport you to sunny Spain - just imagine the costumes! The vibrant, infectious “Gypsy Dance,” the dazzling and virtuosic “Grand Pas de Deux,” and, my favourite - the beautiful, delicate “Dance of the Dryads,” make for a thrilling night. The "Waltz of the Dryads" features gorgeous flowing movements - and it’s just mesmerizing to watch!
It's hard not to feel utterly delighted watching this iconic ballet, with its captivating mixture of wit and dazzling artistry, showcasing both playful humour and technical brilliance!
But ballet music is not merely about the grand scores of these legendary ballets. It encompasses a whole spectrum of genres and emotions. There is the exquisite elegance of the 18th-century era in works like the Bournonville ballets - for example "La Sylphide" or "Napoli" - featuring music with an irresistible sweetness that can't help but make you smile. Then, there's the powerful emotional impact of the works by the more contemporary ballet choreographers like Balanchine or Robbins. Their work embraces the rich variety of styles and musical sounds and has an immediate emotional resonance, captivating audiences with their evocative and bold contemporary movements.
Ballet music has this unique power - the ability to transport us beyond the realm of everyday life. Through the melodies, rhythms, and harmonies, it connects us to something profoundly human, something that speaks to our hearts and imaginations.
Of course, ballet and the exquisite music that accompanies it are not just about dancing or musical beauty. They are a powerful form of storytelling and a window into human emotions. They challenge us, they inspire us, and they leave an indelible mark on our hearts and souls.
This month, I encourage you to make time for ballet. Immerse yourself in its unique beauty, marvel at its elegance, and lose yourself in its emotional power. Be inspired by the dancers who grace the stage, and revel in the rich tapestry of sounds created by some of the world's greatest composers. For, just like a ballerina gracefully gliding across the stage, ballet music is a timeless, enduring masterpiece, waiting to be discovered, explored, and cherished.
As the festive season begins and the snowflakes gently fall, remember this:If there is a single thing in life that embodies grace and artistry, that combines the ethereal beauty of music with the powerful expressions of dance, then it’s the magic of a ballet. And, when you’re watching those magical dancers perform their graceful, often gravity-defying movements… what you’re really experiencing is pure artistry, set to a captivating score.
So, when the holiday lights begin to twinkle, when the frost paints delicate designs on your windows and your heart feels filled with that particular warmth of the festive season, I encourage you to head to the ballet, or perhaps listen to your favourite pieces in the comfort of your own home. There’s an enchantment that lingers, like a delicate mist in the winter air, long after the music has ended and the curtain falls. As the ballet season opens in December, and the spirit of festivity envelops us all, may your dance of life be filled with beauty, joy, and an elegant rhythm all its own. Happy December!
