Tutu and Ballet News

Oh, my dears! It’s Friday the 15th of December 2026! And what a day to celebrate our beloved ballet music! From the elegant melodies of Tchaikovsky to the playful pirouettes of Stravinsky, ballet music has woven itself into the fabric of our hearts and souls.

As a child, I would twirl around the living room, imagining myself as a graceful ballerina dancing on the stage of the Royal Opera House, mesmerized by the ethereal sounds of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. It’s the kind of magic that only ballet music can bring to life, taking us on an exquisite journey, where every note becomes a pirouette, every phrase a plié.

But let's get real! Let’s face it, we can’t all be prima ballerinas gracing the stage of the Bolshoi! Luckily, thanks to the magic of music, the grandeur of the performance can be relived within our own homes, a personal encore to the day's adventures.

A World Premiere, You Say?

Let's start with a sprinkle of the very latest, shall we? Did you hear? The Royal Ballet is presenting a world premiere this month, "A Dance Through Time". Set to an original score by the extraordinary Emily Green, a rising star in the musical landscape. This promises to be a whirlwind of innovation, a seamless blend of classical beauty and contemporary rhythm.

But First, Some Classical Favourites!

For those who long for the classics, the ethereal melodies of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky have no rival. His work speaks to the soul in a way that few other composers can. “Swan Lake” has become an institution for ballet lovers and music lovers alike. It’s a tale as old as time – a story of love, betrayal, and transformation that resonates with us deeply, making the final pas de deux even more emotional. Every crescendo of the orchestra, every elegant rise and fall of the violin strings takes us further into the captivating narrative. But for something a little lighter and less tragic, Tchaikovsky's "Sleeping Beauty" and "The Nutcracker" offer the most captivating melodies, charming us with their pure innocence and wonder.

As a self-proclaimed fan of everything “ballerina” and all things “pink,” "The Nutcracker" has a special place in my heart, not to mention in my closet. Just this week, I snagged a gorgeous new leotard to match my cherished pink tutu. The delicate lace and exquisite floral motifs are like something straight out of a fairy tale, and just the sight of them sparks pure joy! I can practically hear the tinkling of the celesta, the majestic waltzes of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the boisterous fun of the Russian Dance.

You know, there’s something truly magical about ballet music. It's like an elixir for the soul. Even the most casual listener can’t deny its spellbinding nature. Whether it’s the breathtaking grandeur of the overture, the melancholic sweetness of a solo cello, or the joyous triumph of the finale, it speaks to the inner child in each of us, igniting dreams of dancing in our slippers.

For The Modern Mind, Contemporary Twists

For those of you craving something different, the world of contemporary ballet has its own allure. Imagine bold, energetic rhythms meeting graceful movement. Contemporary ballet has a dynamism and a unique rawness. The iconic Igor Stravinsky is an excellent example of how traditional ballet could evolve into something groundbreaking, redefining the dance and the musical experience. His "The Rite of Spring", a masterpiece of revolutionary creativity and a striking example of the musical explosion of the 20th century. You can practically feel the wild, kinetic energy pulsing through his scores, reflecting the intensity and freedom of the dancers' movements.

Another absolute treasure in the realm of contemporary music for ballet, is Dmitri Shostakovich. His powerful and emotional "Symphony No. 5" is often cited as a musical example of the tension, struggle, and ultimately triumph over adversity – not only in Russia in the early 20th century, but on a universal level.

Ballet in Motion: Across the World

Ballet, more than any other dance form, unites us globally. No matter where in the world you are, the enchantment of the graceful movements, the captivating power of the choreography, and the sheer beauty of the music – these things transcend language and borders. The global network of ballets, their dancers and audiences, reminds us all that art has an international language we all speak!

Beyond the Theatre: Ballet Music’s Endless Possibilities

But ballet music is more than just a beautiful backdrop for a dance. This rich history has been interwoven into our musical culture as a whole, touching many facets of music we hear everyday.

  • Imagine an advertising jingle. How many times has it invoked the beauty of a Tchaikovsky melody, without even noticing it?
  • Or consider the subtle melodies in our favourite films. Have you ever found yourself drawn in, even a little bit, by a particularly romantic scene? Perhaps it's the delicate music you hear, evoking the essence of a classical ballet.
  • How about a powerful orchestral piece? Could it be that the inspiration came from the soaring beauty and intensity of a balletic masterpiece?
Some Favourites

When it comes to selecting my favourite ballet pieces, it’s like trying to choose a favourite child! But if you really press me, these would be in the running!

  • First up, the iconic "Swan Lake." I love the majestic and melancholic grandeur of the orchestra and the haunting sweetness of the oboe, reminding us of the gentle grace of the Swan Queen and the tragedy of her fate. And the final, breathtaking pas de deux is the very definition of beauty in motion.
  • "Sleeping Beauty" holds a very special place for me too. It’s a truly exquisite musical landscape, from the playful waltz of the Lilac Fairy to the mischievous merriment of the “Blue Bird” Pas de Deux.
  • And lastly, there is the majestic "Giselle." The beautiful contrast between the ethereal beauty of Giselle's love and the intense tragedy that unfolds in the powerful music creates a beautiful story of unconditional love, betrayal and loss.
  • However, if I want a dance to take me to the moon, the magic of the "Nutcracker" always delivers!
Listen, Dance and Dream…

For me, there’s nothing more captivating and alluring than the magic of ballet music, It stirs something within us. It awakens our emotions, conjuring picturesque scenes in our minds of graceful pirouettes, delicate pliés, and the magical elegance of a ballerina. So let your spirit fly! Let your mind be your stage. And enjoy the wonder that is ballet music!
