Tutu and Ballet News

My darlings,
What a wonderful day to be celebrating the artistry and beauty of ballet music! May 14th, 2026, feels absolutely divine, and as I stand here with my pink tulle tutu billowing gently in the afternoon breeze, I can't help but feel a twinge of joy. My heart beats like the rhythmic tap, tap, tapping of a ballerina's pointe shoe upon the stage, a gentle and yet impactful thrumming that echoes the heart and soul of every dancer.
Ballet music is a symphony of emotion. The way it rises and falls, ebbs and flows, mirrors the dancers’ graceful movements. From the softest whisper of a cello to the booming crescendos of the full orchestra, the music guides and compels, breathes life into every arabesque, every plié, and every grand jeté.
Today, darling, let's immerse ourselves in the enchanting world of ballet music. It's a world brimming with artistry, passion, and beauty! Let's take a peek at its glittering, ever-evolving landscape and admire its magical charm! We will examine what’s trending, review our favourites, and discuss the ballet world’s latest musical adventures! But first… an accessory must! Yes, we'll dive headfirst into the magical, and I suggest we wear a blush pink leotard to match our glorious tutu, or if you have it, why not a sparkling crystal, diamanté or sequin-covered body-suit for a modern look that whispers sophistication! Isn't this exciting?
Trending Tunes and Melodies:
Firstly, my lovelies, there's a new air about ballet music these days. It’s like the air that floats upon a petal of the most delicate, sweet-smelling rose. You just know, it’s magical! Composers are branching out! They're no longer simply composing to traditional, classical ballet themes, oh no, not at all! And my darlings, that's wonderful!
• A young up-and-coming composer named Max Dubois has re-imagined Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet score with an electronically infused touch, blending in some ethereal-sounding synthesizers! This clever manipulation makes the ballet music sound so beautifully modern. Max has managed to find this extraordinary sweet spot, where he pays tribute to the classical roots, but also brings it bang-up-to-date! He’s added an extra layer of intrigue, keeping the classic ballet vibe while appealing to contemporary audiences. You'll find him at ‘The Royal’ this coming season performing the work live! This is one not to miss! We might just find our dear Mr. Dubois a household name come season's end.
• Then there's young Emily Hart who, much like her contemporary Max Dubois, has also played with convention! Her ‘The Swan Lake’ rendition weaves in folk melodies, the sounds of nature - you can almost feel the wind swirling in the strings - she has created something ethereal and beautifully evocative. Emily will be appearing in July, July at the Birmingham Hippodrome! Her interpretations are utterly spellbinding, like listening to an angelic choir, which, to be honest is just my sort of ballet music and probably will be the theme tune of the upcoming ballet!
• Then, we mustn’t forget that in September we are receiving the incredible ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream' and for those who love ballet and music combined with this famous play - this, my loves, will blow you away!
• In August, my darlings, we will find the Royal Ballet embracing new talent in the ‘Rising Star’ Programme. It's a beautiful programme giving talented young ballet musicians a chance to shine and showcase their amazing talents, all on a fantastic stage, what a dream! You must pop along and enjoy!
Our All Time Favourites: Now let's rewind a little and pay tribute to the icons. There are certain musical pieces that have simply woven themselves into the tapestry of ballets over the centuries. They are, my darlings, absolute staples and as ballet enthusiasts our ‘favourites’ - it’s in our DNA. Let’s name them. I daresay that as I utter them your hearts, will melt into an array of soft, beautiful emotions and nostalgic memories:
• “Swan Lake” by Tchaikovsky - an iconic score of delicate grace and melancholic drama! That beautiful melancholy melody of ‘Odette’ just haunts us and sets the mood of this timeless and exquisite ballet so incredibly well. And “Dance of the Little Swans” has inspired ballets all over the world.
• The 'Nutcracker' by Tchaikovsky - You just cannot imagine ‘The Nutcracker’ without ‘The Waltz of the Flowers’ or 'The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’. It’s not possible, my love! And this magical score truly takes us on an unforgettable journey, bringing the magical realm to life with each glorious melody! We will have many lovely ballets performing this ballet in 2026. You won’t be able to escape its enchanting sound.
• And then my darlings - it is utterly, completely impossible not to adore Debussy’s “Clair de Lune,” the moon-lit beauty and dreamlike atmosphere. A symphony of ethereal emotion that inspires and transports you.
• Don’t forget my darling, "The Rite of Spring," a powerhouse by Stravinsky. I remember watching this with my granny back in the day! Its innovative rhythms revolved around a primitiveness that created a sense of excitement and wonder. We still feel it today! It remains one of the most significant scores in ballet history, an epic of rhythmic strength.
• I couldn't complete this segment without ‘Giselle’ by Adolphe Adam, a score which perfectly encapsulates the tale of love and loss with melodies both dramatic and exquisite.
Musical Innovations and Experimentations:
• The ballet world is a world of constantly evolving artistry. This expands to the world of music, and my darlings, it's simply enthralling.
• This coming October The Bolshoi will be hosting a ballet ‘Dancing on the Edge' with the theme 'A Touch of Madness'! The choreographer is going to create an extraordinary contemporary piece that involves electronic sounds as well as classical themes. The theme will explore the emotions and boundaries of dance using music as its guide.
• In June at the Royal there’s ‘The Sleeping Beauty’, set to original score by the emerging musical maestro, Mr. Simon Williams. Simon is quite the innovator. His ‘Sleeping Beauty’ will present the traditional ballet with an innovative edge, weaving in ambient and electronic textures! Now this should be a beautiful clash. He has also included sound effects to the ballet. This, you can almost bet will take ballet lovers by storm! Mr. Simon has a magical way of blending sound and movement together with some fantastically exciting outcomes!
The Future of Ballet Music:
The music scene within the world of ballet is evolving, it is a magnificent symphony in the making and it is happening in real-time! And so we are truly living in a thrilling period where artistry is reaching heights never experienced before, so many incredible musicians are creating soundtracks, scores, orchestral pieces that bring dance to life with each melodic masterpiece!
• We see a vibrant blending of classical and contemporary influences, which promises a world of musical possibilities that will no doubt delight, captivate, and astound generations to come.
• As we've seen with these contemporary composers - it is absolutely clear that new technology is shaping the direction of the soundtrack of dance, giving us an opportunity to experience familiar music in brand new and thrilling ways!
• What a time to be living, isn’t it, darling! The possibilities are truly endless! So my darlings, grab your tutu, slip into a fabulous pink leotard and take your rightful place in the dance, a place where beautiful melodies bring dreams to life.
