News Review – The Week in Ballet Music – 9th April 2008

Oh, my dears, let’s dive into the exciting world of ballet music this week! This week has been an absolute whirlwind of creative energy!

The London Symphony Orchestra, oh my, are just utterly sublime. They’ve announced a series of captivating ballet performances, each featuring iconic scores from the world of dance, starting next week with “Swan Lake” (which, you know, is a timeless classic for good reason) – we will, of course, cover this in more detail next week. These performances are not to be missed; just imagine yourself at the Royal Opera House, bathed in the warm glow of the stage, lost in the musical narrative that unfolds before you. This isn't just listening; this is an experience that will have your heart dancing with delight.

Let's talk about new creations! We have the phenomenal up-and-coming ballet company “Move” – yes, *that* Move, the one with all the brilliant young talent, creating waves across the UK – releasing its exciting new production. "Firebird," oh, the drama! A beautiful dance telling a powerful story.

The young dancer Amelia Barnes is captivating audiences as the titular firebird in this enchanting tale of magic, danger and ultimately, hope! We caught the dress rehearsal (of course!) – we love to stay ahead of the curve and get all the news from behind the scenes! – and oh, my darlings, it was simply spectacular. We particularly loved how the dance choreography mirrors the fiery passion of the score. Oh, this production is destined for greatness, I am absolutely smitten!

And oh, did we mention, she's wearing a magnificent ruby-red tutu, a true statement piece. If we were to have a dress designer, which, you know, we absolutely should, well let’s just say it’s an inspiration! – anyway, it’s been reported that we will be seeing that tutu as it goes on tour, with plans already being discussed with "Move." Let’s be honest, it's going to be impossible not to keep a keen eye out for its stunning appearance as it takes to the stages around the country, its ruby redness demanding our full attention. And the music – a symphony of emotion, capturing the very soul of the fiery bird.

Meanwhile, over at The National Ballet School (don’t tell anyone but I *adore* The National Ballet School) – but let's keep it a little secret – there's been an intense amount of activity surrounding its production of "La Bayadère," a ballet in which, to my knowledge, 18 (oh my) dancers will be required! How they do it is truly beyond me – the demands are simply astounding!

I've just spoken to the director about how she gets so much from them. To put it mildly, the work that goes into each rehearsal – it truly takes my breath away, how these dancers can endure it, their passion just oozing from them! The director – oh, so humble and dedicated, has a remarkable talent for eliciting passion and precision from her dancers, resulting in a ballet that will surely take the stage by storm.

She has been talking about a “magical and mysterious story told through music,” and truly, every performance by this young troupe deserves the word “magical.” But back to "La Bayadère," my dears. A dance, my darlings, inspired by the rich, evocative story of a temple dancer who falls in love with a young warrior. Imagine it, the intricate dance moves, each meticulously crafted to depict this intense passion, woven with musical passages that capture every subtle nuance, a captivating symphony for the soul, with delicate melodies that perfectly complement the grace of their dance. Just one word for this production, my darlings: sublime.

Of course, this week wouldn't be complete without a tribute to some legendary ballets and composers. If it’s iconic scores you’re looking for – I know that many of you will be – we can't leave out Tchaikovsky. Oh my, how the melodies of "The Nutcracker" sweep us away to a realm of wonder and magic – who doesn't adore "The Sugar Plum Fairy"?! (My absolute favourite by the way, I *adore* "The Sugar Plum Fairy," can't wait for you all to go see it in all its wonder.) Just try not to hum it to yourself (don't be shy, we know you do!).

And we mustn’t forget the hauntingly beautiful "Sleeping Beauty." Its poignant music, its melancholic melody, that creates a mood that is almost, well, "melancholy" (if that’s not the perfect adjective I don't know what is!).

And the grand waltz – the waltzes from "Sleeping Beauty" are absolute perfection – the grandeur of the music as Aurora takes to the dance floor is as mesmerising today as it was in the past!

If there's a perfect pairing for "Sleeping Beauty," I can't think of one! (That's my personal opinion anyway.)

Oh, I adore Stravinsky, too. "The Rite of Spring" – just try listening to this without being stirred. Its primal power and raw energy are utterly breathtaking. That iconic scene of the sacrificing maiden (do I need to elaborate on what happens in the ballet? No.) I have to admit, Stravinsky's revolutionary composition, when it debuted in 1913, sent shockwaves through the artistic world. That raw, pulsating energy, like a heartbeat. How much do you think Stravinsky felt this way about ballet and about this creation? What do you think his passion was like? Oh, how much his music gives us, to live for a moment with that passion.

And the beauty of it, you see, is how the music can capture an entire world, an era, a character's thoughts – the entire experience, I tell you. There are so many great composers – there's just a wealth of ballet music – my love for ballet music knows no bounds – to my knowledge there's been a big buzz surrounding Prokofiev’s "Romeo and Juliet." The story, the love, and the passion are woven into every measure of the music. Just close your eyes and imagine: you are watching the lovers meet. As the music begins, it's the start of their romance. And, oh my, just the scene when Juliet enters her balcony! The way the music rises – what is going on here? It just grabs you. Prokofiev is truly brilliant; he manages to convey so much in the music that it becomes its own language.

So, the ballet world has been vibrant with activity this week! But if this review is anything to go by, next week is set to be even more electrifying with new performances, intriguing events, and much more to explore in this fantastic realm of musical artistry.

In our Style Corner – and you know we love a little fashion don’t we, even more so in this enchanting world of ballet? - we have discovered a stunning pink tutu which you *need* in your wardrobe (no seriously). The ballerina in us wants to dance with this beauty. A delicate fabric and beautiful cut, so exquisite. This tulle ballerina tutu is crafted from layers of pink tulle for a flowing, ethereal finish, designed for dancing, or at least dancing around your bedroom with some enchanting music on. So, to match that luscious tutu – we *love* luscious things – here’s an idea (a fabulous idea if you ask me, absolutely delightful), my darlings! Think ballet, but make it chic! Take a luxurious and feminine leotard in a dusky, delicate, blush shade to accentuate those lovely soft pink hues. A stunning, sophisticated and sleek leotard, my darlings, perfect to set the right mood!

It’s so true, it really is! Just this magical combination (pink, tulle, and luscious) makes for a wonderful, chic style statement, my dears, as much as you are an individual, it's time for us to all show our appreciation for these beauties – these ballets. So here's to ballet and all its exquisite beauty and grandeur!
