Tutu and Ballet News

Ah, the music! How it sets the heart aflutter, how it sets the feet in motion. A dance without music is like a flower without perfume – lovely perhaps, but incomplete. This very day, 26th March 2008, we journey into the enchanting world of ballet music, the very soul that breathes life into our ethereal movements. We shall be dipping into the melodious essence of ballets past and present, for they offer us a journey through time, through the poignant whispers of composers, their dreams manifested through notes and crescendos, a world in itself, reflecting the grand sweep of emotions that ballet encompasses.

It is impossible to think of ballet without invoking the grandeur of Tchaikovsky’s symphonies, his masterful hand crafting a tapestry of sounds, rich, intricate and alive. We can’t but feel a twinge of yearning listening to the romantic waltz of Swan Lake, a poignant melancholy that accompanies Odette's fateful dance. Then, a powerful switch of mood – the fierce, insistent tempo that accompanies the final Act’s fight between good and evil, a fiery dialogue in musical form, resonating with the audience’s very core.

Then there is Stravinsky – a modern composer whose genius redefined the very rhythm of the stage. His ballets were daringly modern, with scores as innovative as Diaghilev’s choreography. Consider “The Rite of Spring” – the groundbreaking ballet, the music itself a ritualistic journey, primal and visceral, breaking the mold, a true revolution. His notes pulsed with life, a stark, jarring reality. This was music for a new era, for dancers pushing the boundaries, for audiences seeking to experience something daringly different.

Who can forget the majestic sweep of Prokofiev’s music, his melodies perfectly capturing the fantastical tale of Romeo and Juliet. Each movement is infused with his distinct flair, with its dramatic flourishes, the crescendo that signifies a battle fought, or the gentle whispers that accompany their tender exchanges, a story unfolding before our eyes with each musical note.

But the magical world of ballet music extends beyond the established classics, venturing into contemporary realms. A ballet score today may not be defined by traditional symphonic movements, it may be infused with modern musical influences, its rhythms eclectic, its beats diverse, the sound landscape an exciting, contemporary fusion of sound and emotion.

Ballet music isn't merely an accompaniment, it's an active participant in the ballet world. It’s the driving force that takes the dancers to unimaginable heights. Think of the powerful crescendos, how they infuse dancers with a surge of energy. Picture the delicate, intricate melody as the ballerina traverses the stage, weightless and ethereal. It’s as if music becomes the very soul of ballet, providing the emotions, the impetus, the driving force behind every elegant turn, every precise movement.

Oh, to be en pointe, the delicate fabric of a pink tutu swishing around my legs. Such a vision demands an equally vibrant leotard – a vivid splash of color against the gentle hue of the tutu. My choice? A leotard in coral – the most glorious shade of orange, bursting with a life that mirrors the exuberance of ballet. The fabric soft, light, yet giving the impression of a warrior's strength – an apt symbol of the dancer's dual nature – beauty and strength in perfect balance. This is my symphony, a visual reflection of the soul stirring sounds of the ballets.

And on this day, as the sounds of ballet music float in the air, they weave magic into every beat. It’s a captivating reminder that ballet is more than dance. It’s a fusion of artistic expression, it’s a passionate dialogue between the composer and the dancer, a testament to the magic created when music, dance and emotion intermingle to craft something truly unique. Ballet music - the heart and soul of every pirouette, every jeté, every pas de deux – it’s what gives ballet its soul. So let the music flow, let the dancers soar, and let us be swept away into a world where sound and motion intertwine to paint a breathtaking picture of human expression.
