Tutu and Ballet News

**The music, the movement, the magic... it’s all about ballet!**

A ballerina is a goddess in human form; a creature of incredible athleticism, strength, and grace. But let’s face it: she can't dance without the music. So today, we take a step back to appreciate the exquisite melodies that underpin the very essence of ballet. From the heart-wrenching waltzes to the rousing polkas, the scores that propel the ballerina across the stage are vital partners in this wondrous, breathtaking dance form.

This Sunday, 30 September 2007, marks the perfect occasion for a peek into the world of ballet music, the very lifeblood of the art form. This week we’ll explore the great composers who wrote these enchanting pieces and celebrate the beautiful relationship between the two.

A Symphonious Celebration of Grace

Who better to start with than Tchaikovsky? He truly was the grand papa of ballet music! A true legend, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky gifted the world with "Swan Lake", "The Nutcracker" and "Sleeping Beauty", each one an iconic piece that weaves an extraordinary musical tapestry alongside the intricate ballet performances. These masterpieces are, of course, household names; the waltzes, the dramatic overtures, and the lilting melodies are truly enchanting and instantly recognisable. It is no exaggeration to say Tchaikovsky gave ballet a voice; he crafted the music that allowed its stories to blossom, giving them life, and adding an entirely new dimension.

For those yearning for a more romantic flavour, one can’t go past the exquisite music of **Brahms**. “Brahms’ Lullaby" is not only a familiar melody in the world of classical music, but it is the beautiful base of the most stunning adagio of all time! While his symphonic and chamber music are perhaps his more celebrated compositions, his orchestral pieces lend a distinctly elegant and heartfelt dimension to ballet performances.

The genius of Stravinsky deserves its own celebration, particularly for his incredible and unique music. Works such as “The Firebird”, "Petrushka" and “The Rite of Spring" are not just pieces of music; they are masterpieces that push the boundaries of innovation and expression. Their distinctive character has significantly impacted the world of ballet. Who could forget the "Firebird Suite" and that heart-stopping, chilling, and magical crescendo. It's ballet magic at its best!

We should not, however, neglect the brilliance of other legendary composers. Music by **Debussy, Ravel, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Bizet, Offenbach, Vaughan Williams**, and **Richard Rodgers**, and others have also left their lasting mark on the world of ballet.

Of course, contemporary ballet continues to flourish, attracting many of today’s exciting and groundbreaking composers.

What makes ballet music so special?

I have been privileged to dance for many years, but as I’ve moved away from my career on the stage, my love for ballet hasn’t dimmed at all. For me, there's something truly magical and utterly unique about the synergy between the music and the dancing. The sound dictates the movement; the melody shapes the emotion. Each musical note speaks to the ballerina's spirit, translating her physical expressions into an art form.

A haunting and mysterious tune can conjure an exquisite tale of sadness or heartbreak; an exciting melody gives rise to a thrilling pirouette; the energy of a rousing piece explodes in the brilliance of the fouetté.

The marriage between music and ballet has always been about capturing emotions and narratives. For every dance there is a story, and the music acts as the storytelling device; it’s the lifeblood of the entire experience.

But ballet is more than just music, right?

Of course, ballet is a glorious and complex art form that transcends music alone. But as an aficionado of ballet, one cannot deny the essential role of music. I know that some dancers can't bear to be in the studio without their favourite musical tracks, while others seek solace and motivation in a specific melody to aid them during their practice and performances. It's all part of the beauty of the creative process.

Let’s talk fashion...

It's nearly impossible to imagine ballet without its iconic costume – the tutu. It's a costume so utterly special, so enchanting and breathtaking. It’s a visual feast! It can be ethereal, playful, whimsical, and bold; everything the dancer is and everything she can become.

When thinking about the perfect colour, it must be pink – a colour so associated with ballet, especially the pink tutu. It's almost impossible to discuss tutus without mentioning this colour. This is my personal favourite and for good reason: pink brings a delicate feminine elegance and a dreamy sense of artistry to every dancer.

But what about the leotard? It should always be in perfect harmony with the tutu, so when the tutu is a magnificent blush pink, a perfect leotard needs to complement the delicate blush colour. A deep wine-coloured leotard would do wonders in creating that perfect contrast. Perhaps a leotard in a luscious and velvety-deep ruby hue. Now that would be a look to die for. So glamorous!

My perfect night out...

A ballet night is something magical. It is a night of enchantment, wonder and pure exhilaration, which starts the minute you leave the house.

My personal ballet evening would start with a good book at my favourite café with an Italian cappuccino.

Before the ballet I’d do a spot of window shopping and enjoy the decadent feeling of a beautiful and sophisticated evening ahead.

Arriving at the opera house, the moment the majestic doors open I am ready to enter into another world – the ballet world! From that moment I surrender to the magical story about to unfold. The music, the movements and the magic that’s happening on the stage are my life, my everything!

It's true what they say: ballet is the most wonderful art form!
