Ballet Music: A Symphony of Dreams

Oh, the enchantment of ballet music! It swirls around me, a delicate, ethereal cloud, whispering secrets of grace and passion, carrying me away on wings of sound. And today, July 10th, 2007, is a day to revel in this symphony of dreams. We celebrate the composers who breathed life into the silent language of dance, the artists who wove sonic tapestries to accompany the ethereal beauty of twirling ballerinas. Let us raise our imaginary champagne flutes, dear readers, to the timeless enchantment of ballet music.

This year, the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden will host a special celebration dedicated to the music of the ballet. It is an event fit for a fairy godmother! A veritable constellation of talent will gather, including the esteemed composer, Dame Thea Musgrave. Dame Thea's work is a testament to the power of music to transcend time and transport audiences to magical realms. It's truly thrilling to know she'll grace us with her presence!

As the music washes over us, let us transport ourselves to a world of elegance and poise. The dancers, clothed in tulle and silk, seem to float effortlessly across the stage, their movements a perfect harmony with the swirling melodies. The grand pas de deux, a timeless dance of love and longing, is rendered even more poignant by the dramatic, romantic strains of Tchaikovsky. Such a powerful combination! Think of the vibrant hues and the sparkling sequins! A pink tutu and matching leotard – the perfect colour combination to match the shimmering romanticism of a beautiful ballet piece. The melody, a siren song calling to the heart. Such grace, such fluidity! I simply adore it!

Of course, ballet music is not simply for the classical concert halls. It finds a place in our daily lives, in film, and even in television. When the music of Swan Lake graces the airwaves, I feel my pulse quicken with anticipation! The graceful swan dances in my mind's eye, the melancholy beauty of the music taking hold of my heart. I picture a dreamlike setting – maybe a garden bathed in the silver moonlight, filled with lilies and roses – just like a page from one of my favourite fairytales! Ballet music holds such a magic. It allows us to momentarily escape into another world and let the dreams and stories unfold in our own imagination.

Let us, then, embrace this beautiful day. We will indulge in the delightful melody of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, savour the exquisite grace of Debussy’s La Mer, and get lost in the grandeur of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. Each note, each phrase, transports us to a world where beauty and passion dance hand in hand.
