A Ballet Music Miscellany: 21st March 2007

Dearest darlings, it’s that most magical of days again – 21st March, the spring equinox! And to mark the turning of the seasons, what could be more fitting than a dive into the intoxicating world of ballet music? Oh, the stories it tells! The passion, the pathos, the sheer beauty… every note a brushstroke, painting our very souls with emotion. Today, we’re going to waltz through a delightful selection of news, gossip, and revelations about ballet music, embracing its intoxicating charm.

Let’s begin with the London Coliseum, a dazzling venue that hosted the premiere of *Le Corsaire* last week. Oh my, the music! A grand, vibrant affair from the glorious Adolphe Adam, woven with the shimmering threads of Romantic drama and dashing heroics. Each arabesque seemed to spring forth from the very melody, and the ballerinas spun with the ethereal grace of silk in the wind. It was, as they say, pure magic! The sheer dynamism of this piece is something quite remarkable, capturing the spirit of adventure and exoticism, transporting you straight to the shimmering seas and ancient temples of the Levant. Speaking of which, the costumes were a feast for the eyes, vibrant and opulent. The hero’s tunic was a shimmering spectacle, its deep reds and golds whispering tales of heroism, while the female dancers were ethereal in their flowing skirts and gauzy fabrics, their colours swirling and melting like a sunlit dream. The sheer power of the choreography is only enhanced by this visual feast!

And speaking of dazzling costumes, let’s talk about the recent “Dance for Life” gala that took place at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Hosted by the magnificent Misty Copeland, the event was a triumph! A symphony of stunning costumes! Ballet is, after all, a world where colour and form speak in whispered dialogues. My heart skipped a beat when the principal ballerina emerged, a shimmering vision in a cherry-red, frilled tutu that practically pulsated with life! To complete this delightful look, she sported a matching leotard. So divine! You just couldn’t help but marvel at how the music transformed every leap, every twirl, into a canvas of pure beauty, as though the dancer herself were the instrument upon which the music played. A true feast for the senses!

And then there was the exquisite Stravinsky, maestro of the unconventional! *The Rite of Spring* is the soundtrack to raw, untamed energy! It pulsates with the very pulse of the earth, resonating with primal rhythms that shake us to our very core. If you ever doubted the raw power of music to evoke emotion, then this ballet will make you a believer.

Speaking of powerful emotion, *Swan Lake* is an absolute masterpiece! Tchaikovsky’s score is as if a heart shattered into a thousand pieces and then were exquisitely strung back together with exquisite beauty. From the fragile fragility of the white swan’s dance to the bold majesty of the black swan, it is a score of captivating depth that makes the heart both ache and soar.

This leads us nicely to a special announcement: there’s a new production of *Swan Lake* coming to London’s Royal Opera House! *Quelle joie*! Rumour has it the costumes are even more breathtaking than usual! It is said they will be a luxurious, modern twist on the classic theme, perhaps with touches of opalescent materials? This has truly whetted my appetite! I have already booked my tickets – after all, a ballet lover should never be without a touch of romance!

But let's not get lost in our ballet reverie! There’s news from the world beyond the barre. The latest buzz is around the young British conductor, Alice Blackwood. At the tender age of 28, she’s making waves in the classical music scene! Last week, she conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a mesmerising rendition of Prokofiev’s *Romeo and Juliet*. A performance as vibrant and full of fire as the star-crossed lovers themselves. Truly, Alice is a talent to be watched, with her youthful energy bringing fresh perspectives and vibrant interpretation to the world of classical music. I’ve heard she’s particularly interested in the use of contemporary dance techniques to reinterpret ballet scores - a truly revolutionary concept! She is someone to watch in the world of classical music.

However, not all is rosy in the ballet world! There have been whispers, of course, of rivalries backstage – just like in every great dramatic tale! The rumours, they are as delicate and subtle as the pas de bourrée, but they are no less intriguing! One rumour I've heard - although take it with a grain of salt - involves the coveted lead role in a new production of *Giselle*. Apparently, two rising ballerinas, one fiery redhead, the other a doe-eyed beauty, are both vying for the role! I wonder who will take home the coveted prize? Such a tantalizing puzzle! And it is sure to spark plenty of lively gossip! The best part? We can sit back and enjoy the ballet, letting our imaginations spin along with the dancers as the music weaves its spell.

However, there are many beautiful stories blossoming in the world of ballet. The *London School of Contemporary Dance* has received a much-needed grant! This means they will be able to offer even more scholarships to young dancers – nurturing the next generation of balletic talent. This brings a joyful twirl to my heart! It’s all about celebrating these young artists, nurturing their passions and letting their unique talents bloom. These young talents are sure to set the dance world ablaze!

Speaking of celebrating, what could be more fitting than the upcoming international ballet festival? This year's theme is the power of music. I dare say, it’s set to be a spectacle that will ignite the senses! Ballet music transcends the stage and speaks to our souls – an invitation to embrace the joy of movement, emotion and, most of all, the beauty of shared artistic passion. Let’s revel in the kaleidoscopic world of ballet music. From the grand narratives of Tchaikovsky to the wild energy of Stravinsky, each score offers a window into a world of wonder. As the music swells and ebbs, as the dancers take flight, we too can embark on our own journeys of exploration. Remember, my darlings, there’s magic to be found everywhere! So grab your pointe shoes, twirl your way into the afternoon, and let the music take you away…

Now go and get your tickets! It’s going to be a breathtaking ballet season. And until next time, let your spirit dance.
