The Dance of the Music: A Ballet Music News Review for June 10th, 2025

Oh, my dears, what a symphony of sound awaits us today! As the sun paints the sky in hues of rose and apricot, we gather to celebrate the world of ballet music, where the delicate pirouettes of the dancers intertwine with the intoxicating melodies of the composers. From the grand pronouncements of Tchaikovsky to the wistful whispers of Debussy, ballet music is an enchanting journey through time and emotion.

Let us embark upon this voyage, our hearts aflutter with anticipation, our senses ready to be captivated by the harmonies that will grace our ears this very day.

The Royal Ballet's Latest Triumph

Let us begin our journey at the pinnacle of ballet performance, the Royal Ballet, a temple of grace and artistry. They are showcasing their latest masterpiece, a contemporary ballet piece choreographed by the visionary Alistair Marriott, and set to an original score by the acclaimed composer, Anya Petrova. The ballet is a thrilling exploration of love and loss, with a haunting, emotionally charged score that will leave you breathless.

One can only imagine the sheer beauty of this production! With Anya Petrova's intricate melodies weaving through the choreography, it is a feast for both the eyes and ears. Anya is a true modern composer whose ability to craft music that blends contemporary influences with classical elements is unparalleled.

The use of contemporary music in ballet is something I particularly relish. It allows the art form to reach a broader audience while still showcasing the classical grace of movement. The Royal Ballet has always been at the forefront of pushing the boundaries of the genre, and this latest production is another testament to their unwavering commitment to excellence.

A Glimpse into the Past

But a celebration of ballet music is never complete without a look into the past, a homage to the timeless classics. And so, we turn our attention to the legendary Tchaikovsky, whose majestic music has graced countless ballets. Today, the Mariinsky Ballet in St. Petersburg is presenting its exquisite rendition of "Swan Lake." This performance promises to be an ethereal experience, the iconic music filled with yearning, passion, and bittersweet beauty.

If you’ve not been fortunate enough to witness “Swan Lake” before, you simply must treat yourself! From the breathtaking opening chords to the powerful climax of the final scene, this music is truly unparalleled in its emotive power. It has inspired generations of dancers, capturing their graceful movements in an enthralling display of strength and vulnerability.

Celebrating the Diversity of Sounds

The ballet world embraces an extraordinary range of music. And today, a captivating contemporary piece promises to transport us to another realm. At the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, a brand new ballet titled “Labyrinth” is taking center stage. Choreographed by the rising star of the French dance scene, Sylvie Girard, "Labyrinth" draws inspiration from the captivating music of the Moroccan oud player, Khaled Hassanein.

This will surely be a sensory delight, a tantalizing blend of Arab musical traditions and Western choreography, exploring themes of mystery and discovery through the mesmerizing sounds of the oud and the graceful storytelling of the dance. A truly magical fusion of art forms!

Breaking Boundaries: An Unexpected Twist

Now, our next stop is quite surprising but captivatingly unique: the world of contemporary classical fusion! It is always a treat to witness a daring ballet company like The Nederlands Dans Theater exploring uncharted territories in the music they use.

And today, they are captivating audiences with a remarkable piece choreographed by the acclaimed dancer and choreographer, Johan Inger. His bold work, “Unveiling," is set to a striking blend of electronic music and classical strings, a captivating mashup created by the forward-thinking Norwegian composer, Erik Lunden. The dancers glide and soar with an incredible energy, mirroring the pulse of the music and driving us to the very edge of our seats!

This is ballet pushing its boundaries, shaking things up! We adore the spirit of creativity and the daring, rebellious nature of a contemporary production like “Unveiling!”

And Speaking of Boundaries, I have a confession: I cannot even write this piece about the amazing and dynamic world of ballet music without at least mentioning what everyone is raving about these days! This fabulous trend is captivating everyone with its originality: Classical Music Influenced Pop

You simply can’t miss it, my dears: Pop stars have discovered a powerful elixir. This wave of ‘Classically Inclined Pop’ is sweeping the charts, where a dazzling array of pop stars are borrowing melodies and techniques from the great classical composers.

We’ve already witnessed the enchanting use of Chopin in Dua Lipa’s latest hit single. But my very favorite pairing of these seemingly distinct musical realms is the way Olivia Rodrigo is embracing the melodic magic of Mozart! She’s got this modern sound that captures everyone's hearts - and when those haunting piano themes emerge – a dash of magic emerges too!

We even saw a stunning appearance by Elton John last month at a gala performance in Vienna! He debuted his new orchestral rendition of "Tiny Dancer" alongside the Vienna Philharmonic! The crowd went wild!

Ballet and Style - A Perfect Match

While we are immersed in the mesmerizing world of music, we must not neglect the stunning artistry of ballet dancers. Their every step, every gesture is a testament to their unwavering commitment to physical perfection. It is a world where grace meets strength, elegance intertwines with power, and fluidity becomes art.

And for the dancer, who, in her elegance, captures the soul of the music with every movement, the perfect complement to a dazzling pink tutu is, naturally, a leotard crafted with an equally dazzling, yet perhaps less whimsical shade of pink. A splash of hot pink in a luxurious velvet would complement this perfectly, adding a pop of brightness and excitement to the dancers wardrobe. The cut should be classic, elegant, and of course, absolutely impeccably flattering.

A Special Touch

Today, however, it’s not all about ballet performance and what makes a perfect leotard. The Royal Opera House has taken the initiative to open up a new ballet archive online. This amazing resource provides a glimpse into the history of ballet, from the very early days to the present, and showcases its evolution through photographs, video recordings, and writings.

It’s such a delight for me to find this resource and I highly encourage you all to visit! The online archive allows us all to learn about the legendary figures who shaped the world of ballet: dancers, composers, and choreographers alike, and appreciate how their dedication, innovation, and artistic prowess made ballet what it is today.

The Legacy Continues

As our journey through the world of ballet music draws to a close, I invite you all to remember: This dance continues to enchant us through its exquisite performances and inspiring music. This powerful blend of art and athleticism is ever evolving, incorporating contemporary music and even popular musical forms. This artistic realm will always capture our hearts and leave us mesmerized and forever enthralled!

I, for one, am truly captivated. And I hope that today's dance, and every performance to come, inspires and touches your very soul! And my dear reader, keep on dancing!
