A Grand Jeté Through the Year in Ballet Music: A Whirlwind of Reviews

As the curtain falls on another year, it seems only fitting that we celebrate the glorious world of ballet music. From the grandest of scores to the most intimate whispers of emotion, the melodies and rhythms of ballet have carried us on a captivating journey. And what better time to reflect upon these sonic treasures than on the eve of the new year, a moment when time itself takes a grand jeté into the unknown.

Oh, the year has been a whirlwind! So many new ballets graced the stage, each with a musical heartbeat of its own. We’ve been mesmerised by shimmering waltzes that swept us off our feet, stirred by tempestuous pas de deux that spoke of love and longing, and energised by vibrant rhythms that pulsated with life. And the old classics, ever the stalwarts, continued to enthral us with their timeless beauty. It's been a truly grand ballet season.

New Creations and their Soundtracks:

  • Let's start with a highlight of the season: the utterly mesmerizing "Echoes of the Moon." The ballet tells a fantastical tale of love and transformation under a shimmering full moon, and its score by the up-and-coming composer, Emily Carter, perfectly captures this moonlit magic. It's a symphony of shimmering harp arpeggios and ethereal flute melodies, laced with haunting cello solos that weave an spellbinding narrative. Think moonlight reflecting on water, soft sighs of wind, and the heart’s yearning expressed through ethereal harmonies. The ballet’s exquisite costumes were inspired by this score, with a shimmering silver gown evoking the lunar glow. The dress was exquisite, but as for the pink tulle tutu, a perfect leotard would be the vibrant fuchsia, echoing the vibrant colours of the moon’s reflected light.

  • Speaking of contemporary innovation, the daring "Ascension" by Christopher Jones, a choreographer known for his fearless embrace of new ideas, made a considerable splash. He set his bold, kinetic choreography to a pulsating electronic score, creating a thrilling ballet experience. The music is full of electronically manipulated percussion, hypnotic bass lines, and pulsing synth arpeggios, mirroring the kinetic energy of the dance. For a costume to match the energetic choreography, I imagine a striking black leotard that embodies the dynamism of the electronic score.

  • The whimsical world of "Whispers of the Wood" captivated audiences with its fairy-tale charm. The ballet’s score, composed by Oliver Rose, is a delightful mix of whimsical pizzicato strings, lyrical woodwind solos, and even a dash of gentle percussion reminiscent of birdsong. A vibrant emerald leotard, reflecting the green hues of the enchanted forest, would complement the delicate grace of the choreography, just like a jewel glistening amongst lush greenery.

Returning Favorites: A Dance through Time:

  • Of course, the year wasn’t all about the new; it wouldn't be complete without revisiting some of ballet's timeless treasures. Tchaikovsky's music for "Swan Lake" is as timeless and elegant as ever, with its haunting melodies capturing the yearning, despair, and hope that makes the ballet such a powerful and moving experience. If I were designing for the swan queen, I'd envision a celestial, sapphire blue leotard that reflects the regal and ethereal spirit of her character, just like a sky brimming with twinkling stars.

  • Another timeless score, Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring," continues to be both a thrilling and visually impactful ballet experience. The music is powerful and explosive, mirroring the barbaric rituals depicted on stage. In my imagination, a fierce, tribal-inspired, terracotta orange leotard could symbolize the raw energy and fierce primal power of the dance. I would make sure to add textures, layering and cuts to accentuate this animalistic yet elegant spirit of the music.

  • While a ballet may be old, the choreography never seems to get tired, as was proven again this year by a captivating revival of Prokofiev’s "Romeo and Juliet." The music masterfully captured the passionate emotions, the gentle whispers of budding love, and the dark drama of betrayal in a tale of two star-crossed lovers. A leotard in crimson, with delicate black accents, is the ideal tribute to the timeless love and tragic fate of these characters, evoking the intense passion and beauty of their story.

A Musical Tapestry of Emotion:

The world of ballet music isn't just about beautiful melodies; it’s also a rich tapestry of emotions. From the joyful exuberance of the “Sugar Plum Fairy” in "The Nutcracker," which makes us want to twirl alongside Clara in her winter wonderland, to the soul-wrenching lamentations of “Dying Swan," a classic which never fails to leave a tear in our eye, the music is our conduit to these emotions. We find ourselves lost in the ethereal realms of musical expression, transported by the power of music and dance to other places and times.

The Future of Ballet Music:

As we look towards the new year, one thing is for certain: the ballet world will continue to explore, evolve, and push boundaries in both dance and music. Perhaps we'll see a rise in "fusion" pieces blending ballet techniques with other dance forms like flamenco, or a greater embrace of electronic music. The sky, much like our dreams, is the limit, and I am, like so many, eagerly awaiting what the coming year will bring. The possibilities are as limitless as our imagination, as beautiful as the artistry that inspires us. But, of course, as we enter a new year, a beautiful dance of creativity will continue.

The magic of ballet isn't confined to the stage; it also echoes through the streets, the parks, and every quiet corner of our hearts. Ballet is not just about leaping across the stage or executing perfect pirouettes; it’s about a shared language, an understanding of expression, and an emotion that transcends words. The year may come to an end, but the music of the ballet, like the stars in the sky, remains constant, forever illuminating our hearts, souls, and minds.

I would be thrilled to know your favorite ballets. Please let me know in the comments! Happy new year!
