Tutu and Ballet News

The year is 2024. Christmas is around the corner, the air is crisp with the promise of snow, and my heart, like the beat of a conductor’s baton, is quick with excitement. For today, 14 December, is a day to celebrate something truly magical: the exquisite, ethereal, and eternally enchanting world of ballet music.

Let us journey back to the very roots of this exquisite art. We’ll dance back to the salons of France in the 17th and 18th centuries where the elegant figures of the French court took their first tentative steps. Here, the birth of the ballet took root, spurred on by the intoxicating sound of composers like Lully, Rameau, and Campra. Imagine, my darlings, the swirling silks of a courtly gown and the tinkling of a harpsichord. Ah, what a scene it must have been.

But our journey through the history of ballet music can’t just stop with the whispers of courtly waltzes and the twinkling of the harpsichord. We must march on, twirling past the 19th century where the music of Tchaikovsky took centre stage. His masterpieces – *Swan Lake*, *The Nutcracker*, and *Sleeping Beauty* - have become synonymous with ballet music. Each note a story spun out of emotions as deep and beautiful as the twirling arabesques on the stage.

Tchaikovsky's music took us to worlds unseen. We swirled with the graceful swans, trembled with the Nutcracker, and were captivated by the beauty of Aurora's sleep. It was a glorious age of emotionality where ballet became more than a spectacle. It became an art form where dance and music conspired to paint a portrait of human emotions, joy, sorrow, love, and longing.

And what would our beloved ballets be without the artistry of our incredible choreographers? I am speaking, of course, about those titans of the dance world - Michel Fokine, Sergei Diaghilev, and Vaslav Nijinsky. Their ballets, set to the scores of Debussy, Stravinsky, and Ravel, pushed the boundaries of dance and challenged convention, demanding that we look beyond the glitter and sequins and understand the stories etched in the very movement itself.

I must admit that, while ballet may appear light and whimsical, beneath its surface lies a potent and powerful story waiting to be revealed. Imagine, if you will, the soaring melodies of Stravinsky's *The Rite of Spring* which propelled Diaghilev's company and their interpretation of ‘the primal rhythms of creation and destruction’. And then the evocative tenderness of Debussy’s *Clair de Lune* as the dancers expressed feelings of delicate longing, melancholy, and shimmering introspection. Oh my dears, to truly appreciate these pieces is to fully immerse yourself in the emotions they evoke, the tales they weave.

I'm also a huge fan of Sergei Prokofiev, the composer of *Romeo and Juliet* and *Cinderella*. His music, dramatic and emotive, is like an exquisitely written drama brought to life through the poetry of movement. The very core of a love story unfolds before your eyes through the dance, each pirouette and jump telling us more of the characters’ lives.

We could journey deeper into this glorious world - discovering the rich history of ballet music in other countries - the majestic Russian ballet, the charming stories spun out by Italian opera and ballet, the elegant figures and delicate movements of the French school, the powerful expressions and sweeping lines of the American ballets, But for now, I'm sure you’re dreaming with me, of pink tutus and the magical symphony of the orchestra.

Speaking of tutus... do you know that if you have a pink tutu, there’s a matching leotard just for you, perfectly complimenting its tulle and shimmering fabric? You wouldn't want to wear it with any old leotard would you? Fashion, my darlings, is crucial for the complete and authentic ballet experience.

I have a perfect pink tutu in mind, with a multitude of layers, fluttering in the soft breeze. Each tulle ruffle is as light as a feather, delicately crafted, with just the right amount of sparkle and shine. This ballerina masterpiece should be paired with an equally striking leotard, the kind with intricate lace or elegant embellishments, in a shade of pale pink, a subtly different tone than the tutu. Let the leotard and the tutu complement each other, harmonizing to complete this magical ballet fashion moment.

Just as there is no one way to enjoy a symphony, no single approach captures the joy of a ballet. But for me, there are elements that cannot be omitted, must not be left out for fear of diminishing this magical experience.

I always, always, insist on a well-chosen, carefully selected playlist. My current one is an eclectic mix of Tchaikovsky, Debussy, and Prokofiev, because those melodies bring back memories, ignite the spark of dance in my soul, and encourage the rhythmic grace that is at the very heart of ballet.

Then there is the ritual of warming up. This crucial part of every dance session is not to be missed. A warm-up doesn't just prepare the muscles for the demanding moves; it awakens your inner dancer, aligning your energy and allowing it to flow as effortlessly as the most skilled ballerina's leaps and twirls.

Finally, there is the ultimate privilege: the actual dance itself. I choose my music with care. Then, my ballet space, a sanctuary, transforms. I allow myself to be swept away by the notes and my heart sings as my feet move gracefully, drawing intricate figures across the floor, replicating a swan's elegant movements or the dramatic steps of Romeo and Juliet. This, dear friends, is pure, unadulterated magic.

So, what do we have here today? A world of vibrant and intricate dance music. But it’s more than that, it is a reminder that beauty lies in the unexpected and that music, even ballet music, can be transformative. A reminder that through movement and expression, we can transcend the mundane and experience a life truly magical.

So, today, put on a sparkling pink tutu and the perfect leotard to match. Turn on your favorite ballet music playlist and dance with all your heart. Let the music carry you to a place of unfettered beauty and pure joy.

The music of the ballet is more than just notes, it is a symphony of emotions that evokes joy, sorrow, love, longing and everything in between. A dance, a ballet, is the story of life in all its wonder, expressed through movement.

The ballet and its music have captivated audiences for centuries and they will continue to enchant the world, long after the curtain falls, leaving us spellbound, entranced, and wanting more.

Today, as you immerse yourself in this world of enchantment, I'm with you, in the rhythm of the music, dancing on. Happy Ballet Music Day, dear friends.
