Tutu and Ballet News

Oh, darlings! Did you see the absolutely divine performance of Swan Lake last night at the Royal Opera House? Honestly, it was simply divine! The Royal Ballet was simply sensational, of course, but there was one moment, oh darling, one moment that stopped my heart. It was during the Act Two 'white swan' scene when Odette - the ever so ethereal Darcey Bussell, of course - rose on pointe, her feathery tutu shimmering under the stage lights, her long, graceful arms extended like wings. For just a second, everything seemed to freeze, and the world dissolved into a magical ballet of beauty. It was a reminder that sometimes, the most stunning art is also the simplest, and the sheer elegance of ballet is impossible to deny.

Speaking of tutus, did you know that August 18th actually has its own special connection to these glorious creations? 18th August, you see, is the anniversary of the very first performance of "La Sylphide," the ballet that was groundbreaking for its use of the lightweight, airy tutu! In fact, the tutu worn by Marie Taglioni in the original performance of this ballet became instantly iconic, signifying a new era of balletic freedom and grace. You know, I love that image of Taglioni soaring across the stage, her weightless form defying gravity. It's such a beautiful, poetic image. She was like a delicate bird, free and airborne! And you know what? The same feeling still persists. Years later, watching ballerinas like Bussell gracefully swirling in a full tutu is a timeless visual. It still has the power to capture your breath and steal your heart, doesn’t it?

Speaking of ballet’s timelessness, it’s also an art form that’s forever evolving. I mean, just look at how much it has changed since those early days! Nowadays, contemporary dance choreographers are embracing new ways to express themselves, blending modern movement with classical technique. It’s absolutely thrilling! Take, for instance, the incredible work of Christopher Wheeldon. His ballets are so incredibly expressive and captivating! Wheeldon knows how to play with light, shadow, and movement to create something truly extraordinary. In a recent performance, one dancer seemed to transform into a flickering flame. It was almost unreal - I gasped!

As with many artistic fields, ballet thrives on diversity, doesn't it? Whether it's a classic production of “Swan Lake,” with its opulent costumes and beautiful stories, or the bold and exciting movements of contemporary dance, the world of ballet has something to offer everyone! From the majestic costumes to the expressive choreography, every element of ballet is designed to capture your imagination and leave you spellbound! Even the colours! Those rich jewel tones, those delicate pastel shades – they all contribute to the magical aura of ballet! Oh darling, I'm just a little bit obsessed with ballet's visual impact!

Ballet's history is fascinating, isn't it? And let's face it, this art form is truly something special, don't you think? I love it for its grace, its strength, its elegance. It's an art that captivates the heart, a story told through movement and emotion. The stories, those fantastic stories of princesses and heroes, good and evil, passion and sorrow... they just get to me. So whether it's a classical ballet, a contemporary piece, or even just a beautifully choreographed duet, I know I'll always be completely enchanted by the magical world of ballet. It's simply divine, don’t you think?

Anyway, darlings, I must dash. Another fabulous show beckons - a production of "Giselle," and rumour has it, it's got an exquisite tutu design!
