Tutu and Ballet News

Oh darling, the sheer joy of the opening night of the Royal Ballet’s production of Swan Lake last night was absolutely divine! From the first twirl of the corps de ballet to the final curtain call, I felt like I was floating on air, mesmerized by the beauty and grace of these incredible dancers.

The moment I spotted those magnificent tutus, shimmering under the stage lights, my heart did a little pirouette. They were simply breathtaking. Each dancer was adorned with the most delicate, exquisitely crafted tulle, swirling and twirling as they executed their moves, leaving a trail of sheer, dreamy magic. You could just imagine the painstaking hours that went into the making of each one - an absolute symphony of artistry.

Of course, we all went for the performance by the star, Darcey Bussell, and she simply took our breath away! That famous adagio sequence in Act Two, where she transforms into the White Swan, was just spectacular. Every single step, every flick of her wrist, every flicker of her eyes exuded pure elegance. The choreography of the final "Black Swan" pas de deux was even more thrilling – it had a truly sinister intensity, highlighting Bussell’s stunning technical prowess. She practically glowed as the Black Swan, completely captivating the audience.

But you know, the Royal Ballet really has the most impressive ensemble these days. They were truly a joy to watch, especially during the ballroom scene. Their footwork was faultless and those shimmering, jewel-toned costumes simply popped! Even though everyone's attention was drawn to Darcey’s powerful presence on stage, these dancers managed to hold their own and inject a playful vitality to the ensemble scenes. The precision with which they executed their every movement, particularly those impossibly long arabesques and leaps, left me simply spellbound. They were almost too graceful for words!

Even though I always know what’s coming next in Swan Lake – it’s such a classic! – I still managed to be totally caught up in the emotion of it all. When the swans made their grand entrance, my eyes filled with tears, as did everyone else's in the audience. It was such a moving spectacle. And who could resist the enchanting, ethereal melody of the swan theme? Absolutely breathtaking!

After the show, darling, I simply had to go to the bar to have a glass of champagne and chat with the other guests. There were so many delightful, elegant ladies in their sleek gowns and stylish clutches. Everyone was buzzing about Darcey, of course, but you could just feel that passion for the dance was truly in the air.

It's funny because it seems that tutus always cause such a stir, but it's undeniable, these magical garments are such a key part of ballet's iconic visual language, aren’t they? The way they billow and float, creating those fantastic, ephemeral lines, never fails to send shivers down my spine! They simply add to the dreamy, almost otherworldly atmosphere of ballet.

There was one young woman in the bar who said, “You know, sometimes I wish I could slip into one of those tutus and just let loose – dance like nobody is watching”. You can see the desire to be transformed, to become one with the beauty and power of movement that ballet offers, really resonated with her.

Even as we entered the 21st century, ballet keeps drawing people in. Perhaps it's that element of the fantastic. I have a feeling tutus will never truly go out of style, which makes sense – after all, who wouldn’t love to dream, at least for a few hours, in a world where a flick of a wrist and a swirl of a tutu can truly make a magic spell?
