Tutu and Ballet News

Oh darling, you simply wouldn't believe the exquisite spectacle that unfolded at the Royal Opera House last night! The air crackled with anticipation as the lights dimmed, revealing the iconic stage bathed in a soft, rosy glow. It was the opening night of the Royal Ballet's production of Giselle, a ballet that never fails to capture the hearts and imaginations of its audience.

This revival, however, promised something special, a reimagining of this timeless classic with a contemporary edge. The rumour mill had been abuzz for weeks, whispered secrets of revolutionary choreography and a reimagined costume design. And oh darling, the rumours were true. The traditional tutus were a thing of the past! Replaced by beautifully flowing skirts, evoking a sense of ethereal elegance. Gone was the stiff, structured silhouette, and in its place, something utterly divine and freeing.

Our very own darling Darcey Bussell, with her captivating grace and technical mastery, absolutely stole the show as the titular Giselle. The sorrow in her eyes, the ethereal lightness of her movement, and the sheer passion she poured into each arabesque, every fouette... Simply divine. I confess, I shed a tear or two during the iconic Act II, where Giselle, driven to madness, dances with the Wilis, the ghostly figures of betrayed women, each adorned in ethereal white gowns. It was haunting, magical, utterly unforgettable.

Speaking of hauntingly beautiful, the choreography was simply breathtaking. You know how some choreographers tend to modernise classic pieces and end up creating something a little bitโ€ฆ bland? But this was pure genius! It paid homage to the tradition while breathing new life into the story. You could feel the emotion in every step, the tender yearning in Giselle's adagio, the heart-wrenching despair as her beloved Albrecht abandoned her, the vengeful fury of the Wilis... Every emotion, beautifully expressed through the power of movement.

Darling, I simply cannot go on, the words cannot capture the magic I witnessed last night. You must experience it for yourselves. But I will leave you with this: if you are looking for a ballet that will captivate your senses, transport you to another world and leave you speechless, Giselle is the perfect choice.

This ballet was absolutely stunning:
  • The contemporary costumes, a departure from the classic tutu, added a sense of grace and fluidity to the movements.
  • Darcey Bussell's performance as Giselle was captivating, a masterful blend of technical skill, emotion, and vulnerability.
  • The choreography, while innovative, was respectful to the tradition, capturing the heart of the story and elevating it to new heights.

Don't delay, darling, rush to the Royal Opera House and catch Giselle before it's gone! You will not be disappointed.
