Tutu and Ballet News

Darling, can you believe it’s October already? The crisp air is swirling fallen leaves around our ankles, like a fleeting ballerina in a swirling autumnal skirt, and the nights are getting longer, a perfect time for indulging in a little cultural escapism. Speaking of which, have you heard about the extraordinary season we have in store at the Royal Opera House this year? It’s a veritable cornucopia of dance delights, each more exquisite than the last.

Let's begin with the upcoming "Giselle" - an absolute masterpiece! Set to a breathtakingly beautiful score, it tells a timeless story of betrayal, love, and the supernatural. But what really elevates "Giselle" are the glorious tutus, my dear. Imagine, flowing layers of tulle, so light and delicate, creating the most ethereal, dream-like effect. And speaking of tutus, those of you who follow the ballet world are likely familiar with the recent scandal surrounding the Paris Opera Ballet’s new designs. Let’s just say the director's penchant for 'avant-garde' designs led to some quite shocking looks! But darling, no matter how radical those tutus might have been, they pale in comparison to the truly legendary ballet skirts, like the iconic tutu worn by Margot Fonteyn. Imagine that, it’s more than just fabric and feathers – it’s pure artistry.

Now, back to our London Ballet season, what else do I recommend for your diaries? Of course, we mustn’t forget the utterly divine "Swan Lake," the ultimate tale of tragic love. Prepare to be enchanted by the beautiful dancers gracefully soaring across the stage, and don't forget to look out for the gorgeous tutus – their pristine white fabric perfectly embodies the fragility and innocence of the swan. Now, darling, "Swan Lake" is simply iconic, a truly unforgettable ballet that leaves you breathless! And then we have "The Sleeping Beauty" – a truly charming ballet, full of fairytale romance. Who wouldn’t want to see the heroine, Aurora, grace the stage in her luxurious tutus, as she awakens from her slumber, finally uniting with her Prince Charming? I think the intricate craftsmanship of the tutus in "The Sleeping Beauty" will surely set the pulse racing with their breathtaking elegance and luxurious artistry. The costumes are a triumph, truly reflecting the majesty of the royal courts and the sheer splendor of the period.

But my darling, I do have a small confession. Sometimes, even as a ballet enthusiast myself, the endless string of tutus, although magnificent, can feel just a bit predictable. So this year I have decided to embrace the adventurous side of dance and venture beyond the world of classical ballet. Don't be shocked darling, there’s more to dance than just tutu-clad ballerinas, you know! Let's explore some of the alternative delights. For those seeking a more contemporary twist, the Royal Ballet's program features "The Rite of Spring," a dance sensation from the 1900s, set to Stravinsky’s innovative and groundbreaking music. It’s certainly a more raw, more dynamic experience, with choreography that’s powerful and provocative, often quite intense, so you better grab those tickets quick – you do not want to miss it. But my dear, for a real change of pace, and for something truly exciting and fresh, I simply must recommend the "Dance Massive" festival.

This truly groundbreaking event features contemporary dance styles, like:
  • Butoh
  • Breakdance
  • Hip-hop
  • And even contact improvisation!

Forget about tutus, darling! The "Dance Massive" will make you want to throw off all expectations and just dance to your heart’s content, be it breaking the moves with some fabulous breakdancing or joining in with a little contact improvisation, where movement, touch and exploration are celebrated in a free-flowing, unfettered expression. I must tell you, dear, this festival is quite a spectacle. You will discover new talents, different approaches to movement, and above all, enjoy a new kind of freedom, a way to truly embody the beauty of dance beyond tradition.

Remember, my darling, that no matter your personal dance aesthetic – from classic tutus to cutting-edge contemporary styles – it's all about finding that something that makes your soul sing, and celebrating the universal language of dance. You know I am always with you, darling, in the journey of exploring this vibrant and captivating world! Until next time, stay fabulous and keep your dancing shoes ready!
