Tutu and Ballet News

Oh darling, can you believe it's been a whole year since that divine *Swan Lake* revival? My heart still flutters at the mere thought of those exquisite tutus, their tulle so perfectly layered, they seemed to float on air. Honestly, they were a dream come true. But that's all behind us now, and with autumn's crisp air finally upon us, my love for the stage, it burns brighter than ever. This weekend was a revelation. I went to the *Royal Opera House*, just for a quick peek at the upcoming programme, you see. It was a gloriously intimate afternoon, filled with the sound of hushed whispers and the delightful scent of antique leather-bound books. I Was Simply Delighted To Find That Our City Will Be Treated To A World Premiere! *I swear, I simply could not contain my squeal of excitement. Even the lady at the front desk was caught by surprise.* It's *Romeo and Juliet*, a classic tale told in the most gorgeous of ways, by the renowned choreographer, oh, my, he is absolutely *magnifique*, **Mr. Derek Deane**. They promise it will be a modern take on this age-old tragedy and let me tell you, I have no doubt the tutus will be simply *divine*. Mr Deane's work always feels as if the dancers themselves have choreographed their movement โ€“ you can truly see their emotions writ large on each exquisite limb.
Why Tutues Are My Favourite, Darling! Let's face it, ballet wouldn't be the same without those delightful clouds of tulle! From the ethereal white of the *Swan Queen*, to the romantic blush of a classic *Giselle* to the sassy colours of *La Bayadere* ... the colour and shape of tutus speak to the dancer's soul, or, at the very least, they are the very first impression we, the audience, get from a show! They have, dare I say, *evolved* with time. Think back, darling, to those rigid cones that seemed more like bonnets atop a dancer's head! You simply wouldn't see a *Giselle* with those tutus these days. The fashion has changed, and frankly, *so has the dancing!* But tutus always play an essential role. It's all about achieving a balanced visual. Each carefully placed layer is meant to enhance the graceful lines of the dancer's body and give each graceful, airy move an extra edge of grandeur.
A Closer Look At Tutus. It's not only the design and the colours, darling, that elevate them to art! Imagine, if you will, a *Giselle* gliding across the stage, that lovely blush tulle around her like a cloud. *She moves effortlessly, an exquisite ethereal figure! How is that possible, you ask? Why, tutus are made to allow such artistry! The soft, delicate layers and those lovely petticoats (the *crinolines*, that add to the tulle's structure) work with a dancer's movements.* They simply aren't static and unyielding. Instead, those layered skirts billow out like clouds and swirl around a dancer like a whirlwind. The impact is as graceful as the movement itself. It's an art form in and of itself, it simply elevates a beautiful, demanding artform to new heights.
But Why "Romeo and Juliet" You Ask? My dear, what better backdrop than that tragic tale for *ballet's artistry*? Mr. Deane is sure to give us something unique and oh, darling, we just have to see how he reinterprets this classic with tutus and dancing. Will they be modern with new designs and bold colours? Will they echo the romantic hues of past ballets, perhaps using shades of soft grey to hint at the darker elements of the story? Or maybe a brilliant red to contrast with the grey. My dear, my curiosity is at a fever pitch.
One thing is for certain: A performance of *Romeo and Juliet* will definitely need to incorporate a full range of emotions! We all know the sadness that surrounds that *final curtain*! But ballet has that way of weaving the beauty of human suffering and passion into a most exquisite whole. Just imagine the story unfolding on stage - from the love between Romeo and Juliet, the feuds between the warring families, to that *heartbreakingly tender* ending... I will *definitely* have tears in my eyes. And just imagine the impact a modern interpretation can have with just the right set of tutus! It is the dance, and the music, of course, but darling, it is that perfectly chosen costume that brings those words, emotions, movements, all those story elements, together as one. A true symphony of emotion in motion. *Let us know if you are lucky enough to have seen *Romeo and Juliet*. I must hear all the details!*
