Tutu and Ballet News

Oh, darling! It's simply divine to be here at the Royal Opera House for the opening night of Swan Lake. The excitement is palpable in the air - anticipation buzzing like the wings of a thousand swans. And speaking of swans, you simply have to see the dancers in their ethereal white tutus tonight, floating on stage like clouds in the moonlight. The delicate tulle, so soft and billowing, perfectly embodies the elegance of the swan. Each plié, each pirouette, sends ripples through the fabric, adding a touch of whimsy and ethereal grace to their movements.

Tonight's performance is extra special for me. It's my favourite production of all time! I remember seeing it for the first time when I was just a little girl. The sight of the dancers in their shimmering white costumes took my breath away. I knew then that I wanted to be just like them. And now, to see such a glorious company - their flawless technique, their passionate artistry, the way they literally take my breath away – I’m completely enraptured! The tutus truly do add an air of otherworldly beauty and enchant us with their graceful silhouette.

I'm particularly in love with the detail on these tutus, darlings. They are not simply white pieces of tulle, they’re intricately beaded and adorned with delicate feathers. I simply adore the attention to detail, from the carefully crafted bodice to the flowing train. These tutus don’t just add elegance and movement, but evoke the emotion of the dance, taking the audience on a journey with the swans. They’re a statement piece. A visual cue as to what the ballerina feels, and what she needs us to understand.

I can't help but be fascinated by the artistry of the costume designers, who painstakingly create these exquisite garments. The tutus are the perfect embodiment of Swan Lake, and what we come here to see! They represent the grace, elegance, and tender fragility of the white swans. The black swan costume, well... let’s just say it’s the epitome of bold and dangerous! With its dark and alluring silhouette, it is the perfect contrast to the pristine beauty of its white counterpart.

But the magic of the tutus doesn't stop there. The dancers themselves contribute so much to the way they move and become a single being with them. Watching them float across the stage in those beautiful, soft tutus is like seeing the essence of femininity personified. These tutus are symbols of so much: tradition, elegance, and grace – yes. But also they represent a challenge and the discipline and commitment that it takes to wear one well.

They are also very real, very delicate things. It's amazing to think of all the intricate detail involved in creating them - hours and hours spent on embroidery, beading and stitching. So much skill, passion and art goes into making these garments and when you watch these swans gliding across the stage, with all of those delicate feathers and that flowing tulle – it just fills me with awe!

Today, tutus are as vital a part of a performance of Swan Lake as a conductor is to an orchestra.
  • They are truly an art form in their own right, with a story woven into each tulle petal and a history that is almost as long as ballet itself.
  • I adore them - these exquisitely constructed pieces of fabric, worn by ballerinas who inspire such awe. I wouldn’t have it any other way!
