Tutudrama: The Great Tutu Shortage of '99

Darling, gather round, for a story that's positively scandalous! It's the 11th of June, 1999, and the world of ballet is in a tizzy. I'm talking *tutudrama*, darling. The tutus, those iconic puffs of tulle, those feathered flourishes of femininity, are *gone*, my dears! Vanished!

The Royal Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet, even the delightful school at the end of our street, they're all panicking! They've cancelled their productions. Apparently, someone called "Boris" has raided the tutu supply. "Boris the Tutusnacher," as the papers are calling him. Just imagine! The great prima ballerina, Svetlana, has to perform her final, dramatic leaps with... a beige pencil skirt? Oh, the *horror*!

But let's get to the juicy bits. The gossip, darling, is simply *delicious*. Sources close to the London Ballet (and don't you know that's where the best gossip comes from?) tell me Boris actually used a very impressive collection of tutus, for...wait for it, dear...*personal use.* I don't want to know what goes on behind closed doors in Borovia, but this is *extra*. Apparently, the rogue Boris had a wardrobe full of nothing but tutu-esque loveliness - apparently, he loves pink and loves the colour blue too. The gossipmongers at the Royal Opera House have it that he enjoys parading around the village in a giant *Swan Lake* tutu, causing quite a stir.

Well, it's not all doom and gloom. As my darling grandmother always used to say, "A problem is an opportunity in disguise, sweetie." And this, my dears, has spurred on a flurry of creative brilliance! Now, there are workshops dedicated to making recycled tutus! The Ballet School in Canterbury has launched a competition - the "Tutulicious Challenge" - inviting aspiring tutu-makers to send in their designs for new, eco-friendly tutus made of… wait for it...plastic bottles! Even the Mayor of Wimbledon has issued a challenge to all Londoners - wear your most outrageous tutus on a Monday to show your support for the arts. I daresay there will be tutue *mania* on Monday morning, which is fabulous!

Now, about Boris… the authorities, or *that* policewoman who’s always in our local papers, seem determined to bring him to justice. They say they have his whereabouts but, personally, I wouldn't mind having a quick peek myself, darling. Just a glimpse of what those amazing tutus looked like in those very un-Ballet-esque settings. Imagine! But I’m just an old-fashioned girl and I think that a tutus must always be onstage… perhaps in a little theatre, with a quaint old curtain!

Boris has inadvertently kick-started a movement for sustainable fashion, and isn't it all a tad bit delightful? You never know what a shortage, especially a shortage of *that* sort, might bring out in the human spirit! Oh, this is certainly going to be a story for the books - well, not those books about *boring* history, but those lovely hard-back glossy magazines, don’t you know?! So here’s to you Boris, thank you for all the laughter! The future of ballet might be uncertain but my heart, darling, it is *thriving*!

Fashion Forecast: Tutu Chic Is the Next Big Trend

The Great Tutu Shortage of '99 has inspired a brand new *tutu* craze. Think about it, darling! The traditional white tutu was always *lovely*… but why stop there? The *pink* and the *blue*... I do like the colours of Boris. I daresay a bit of lilac could be divine!

Here are my top trends for Summer '99, all *inspired* by our favourite tutu-obsessed villain:

  • Tutu-to-Go : A practical look for everyday errands. Think about it: Your jeans, a simple blouse... then *wham!* a splash of *colour* and movement with a tutu-esque chiffon skirt layered underneath. Oh, I think this is just *chic*.
  • The Cocktail Tutu: For the *party*, of course, darling! Ditch that little black dress. Why, you can take your trusty little black number… but just add a *hint* of ballet, you know? It's daring, fun and absolutely fabulous.
  • The "Ballerina At Home" Look: The Boris Effect! It is an ode to relaxation and *comfort*, darlings! This is about a soft, pastel tutu skirt worn with comfy knitwear. Perfect for the book club… and I know just what wine pairs best with tulle, *darling*!
  • It's all about embracing those layers, those delicate flounces and, oh, how that colour of pink, darling! It's *fabulous*.
