Tututastic Tuesday: Ballet's Big Day Out

Darling, did you know that today, 12 June 1999, is officially Tututastic Tuesday? Yes, you heard right. It's a whole day dedicated to those delightful, voluminous delights of the dance world: tutus!

Now, before you all go thinking this is just another made-up holiday for bored housewives (oh, and by bored housewives, I obviously mean us chic and glamorous fashionistas!), I assure you, it's a legitimate, official, completely bonkers celebration! We’re celebrating these amazing swirling garments - that we, by the way, can wear without looking silly.

I know what you’re thinking. "A whole day dedicated to tutus? That's just ridiculous!". But listen, you fabulous fluff-loving floozies, there's something magical about those billowing, perfectly-stitched delights, right? Especially when we’re on holiday and a little sun-kissed!

But don't get me wrong, darling, this isn’t about traditional ballet or fussy grand jete’s (although, one must acknowledge the artistry involved, naturally) , oh no. This is all about tutus for everyone! Fancy a tutu at the seaside with a chilled Chardonnay and a beach bag? Absolutely! Want to wear one for a picnic in the park, complete with cucumber sandwiches? Go right ahead!

Don't be shy! It's a glorious day for all things tulle and feather boas. And just to be clear, I’m definitely advocating feather boas in combination with tutus - if it's not quite the full ballet look, it certainly looks as good on everyone!

I hear that tutus have become an increasingly hot fashion item, beloved by celebrities (they get a much bigger cut for fashion items than we do) and the stylish set - and even that wacky Victoria Beckham's given the tutu trend a nod - well, darling, there’s no escaping its magic.

Of course, any self-respecting tutu celebration wouldn't be complete without a spot of dance, would it? So get out there and do a little twirling, darling. It's therapeutic! But remember, it's less about perfecting your pliés, more about celebrating those layers and layers of loveliness and the gorgeous swirling volume!

To make your tututastic Tuesday a truly glamorous affair, here's my list of 'dos' and 'don’ts’:

The dos of Tututastic Tuesday:

  • Don your most dazzling tutu. Let’s see all the tulle and be generous with the feather boa.
  • Plan a tutu-themed picnic - even an "Afternoon tea party for tutus" with delicious miniature finger sandwiches would be great. Add in all the quintessential fancy things you can, but in the spirit of celebrating the tutus, just leave out the tea, it will be too much!
  • Get out in the sunshine (as long as it’s dry darling) and give it your best, happy pirouette. Bonus points if you manage a full-blown twirl! I mean, seriously darling, a really spectacular pirouette requires years of ballet training, so, a big twirl is just the ticket, right?
  • Indulge in a bottle of bubbles, preferably rose or prosecco - all about keeping things pink and pretty. Just be careful to keep the drink away from the lovely fluffy stuff as it can stain!

The don’ts of Tututastic Tuesday:

  • No complaining. It's Tutu-licious Tuesday, let's be positive about life. You know how annoying people are. Don’t tell me how difficult finding a good tutu in the UK is, as there are tons of places in the city to source them from!
  • No frown-face tutus. Tututastic Tuesday is a day to celebrate the whimsy and the sheer joy of life. The last thing we need are mournful looks under those clouds of lovely tulle! And besides darling, tutus only really work on happy faces.

So there you have it, darling. Go forth and enjoy a day of tutu-ing! Let's make this the most fabulous and most twirlingly enjoyable day of 1999.
