Itâs a truth universally acknowledged, that a single girl in possession of a good tutu, must be in want of a decent dance partner! And darling, last night at the Royal Opera House, there were more tutus than you could shake a pointe shoe at!
Why? Well, dear reader, it was the annual âTutu Ballâ, the most important event in the London ballet calendar since the last time a celebrity broke their ankle on stage at the Royal Albert Hall. This yearâs event saw an abundance of tulle and taffeta in the grand ballroom as ballet lovers and wannabe dancers alike gathered for a night of pirouette-filled frivolity and more sequins than a disco ball could handle.
Now, the first thing to know about the Tutu Ball, darlings, is that the dress code is VERY strict! Anything less than a full-on tulle explosion just wonât do. Think âGone with the Windâ meets âSwan Lakeâ, with a dash of âBreakfast at Tiffanyâsâ. Thankfully, all the girls seem to have the memo this year, with each more extravagant than the last.
As for the boys, they really do make an effort with the suits this year! Honestly, a bunch of charming princes in perfectly tailored velvet and silk jackets⌠swoon! It made it difficult to take my eyes off the dance floor, where everyone from prima ballerinas to Lord knows who all the people who get invited to this kind of shindig, were twirling and swirling their way around the floor. The energy was practically buzzing in the air.
Speaking of the dance floor, darling, did you know that they imported 5,000 square meters of extra dance floor for the event, all in the colour of the most popular shade of blush pink of course, just to be sure that everyone could twirl to their heartsâ content? Talk about attention to detail!
Now, as for the entertainment, well, darling, it was an absolute feast! Imagine, a ballet performance, the most incredible 10-piece band I've ever seen, and for a special performance â get this - the âRoyal Opera Houseâs newest choreographerâ , apparently an amazing young man from Argentina, with a very handsome mustache⌠*dreamy sigh*.
There were so many tutus swirling, darling! I swear at one point, they all were about to form a vortex of sheer bliss. But letâs not get lost in the glamour just yet â the true stars of the night, were the girls! Honestly, some of those dresses were the stuff of dreams â there were ruffles galore, sparkles to rival the disco era, and not one but two pairs of feather boas in attendance (much to my delight!).
A particularly notable tutu, (you know me darling I have to mention the one!), was worn by, what else can I call her, but the âQueen of the Tutuâ, the iconic Lady Penelope, a noted art patron and ballerina. Letâs just say, darling, sheâs still got it, and she's definitely still wearing a tutu.
All in all, darling, the Tutu Ball was a memorable affair. Iâve already begun saving for next year's! I hear theyâre introducing a new design for tutus this year... âAiry & Chicâ, sounds perfect donât you think? Well darling, until then, youâll have to take my word for it⌠a tutu a day keeps the blah away!
