Tutu and Ballet News

Oh darling, the excitement is absolutely palpable! It's the 13th of October 1999, and you know what that means? Yes, it's finally time to put away those clunky, unyielding winter boots and slip into something a little more... ethereal. It's tutu season!

Now, I know what you're thinking: "Tut us? What's this, the 1980s?" But hear me out. Just as the late Princess Diana taught us all with her fabulous Chanel suit and that legendary 'revenge' dress, a splash of vintage chic never goes out of style. And the tutu, my dears, is just begging for a resurgence!

Tutu Talk

Let's be honest: tutus have had a bit of an image problem. They’re synonymous with ballerinas in their teeny, tiny, impractical leotards and the smell of hairspray that’s as strong as Chanel No. 5. (Which, incidentally, I’d never actually tried – I’ve always been a Dior girl myself.) And who could forget the sheer terror of trying to find a partner for the school dance when you were six, in your flimsy, itchy, white ballet costume with the itchy fabric tickling your inner thigh? (Please tell me you’ve all been through this.)

Tutu-ally a Fab Look

However, a revolution is brewing. It’s time to reimagine the humble tutu for a new century! Imagine it: a breezy tulle confection on a breezy autumn day with the smell of cinnamon lattes in the air. Add some tights, an oversized jumper and some sleek stilettos, and your look is totally haute couture chic. I’m even contemplating ditching the high heels and going bare legs, in a total ‘French Girl‘ style moment!

  • The Modern Tutu - think less ‘ballet school’ and more 'designer statement'. Designers like John Galliano and Vivienne Westwood are bringing a grunge edge to tulle. (The latter even did a fab collaboration with Marie Claire magazine on a line of 'grunge’ tutus). There are even chic ‘cocktail tutus' made from sequins, shimmering satin, or sheer silk that are just perfect for a night out on the town.
  • The Tutu as ‘Layer Cake' - Imagine the Tutu layered over that fab velvet dress from French Connection. This isn’t just a 'throw-on’ affair, my darlings. This is about playing with different fabrics, textures, and colours, making it an art form all its own.
  • The Tutu as 'Streetwear' – Who’s saying that tutuliness can’t be an accessory? Imagine your go-to leather jacket paired with a tutu in a striking contrasting colour. (Think hot pink, fire-engine red or royal blue to get that ‘impact' moment). Add a leather bag, or that fabulous pair of Doc Martens for a ‘Street chic' edge.
Get That ‘Tutu-fied' Feeling!

So, what are you waiting for? Step out of your comfort zone, unleash your inner prima ballerina, and put your best foot forward – literally! Just remember, confidence is your most fabulous accessory. (You know, and maybe a pair of pearl earrings for extra 'oomph').
