Tutu and Ballet News

Oh Darling, It's Tutu-ally Glamorous!

Well, darlings, it seems the world of ballet has gone absolutely bonkers! Can you believe it? It's all the rage these days to be caught wearing a tutu – even outside the hallowed halls of the Royal Opera House! Shocking, I tell you. Absolutely shocking.

Apparently, it all started with a little bit of inspiration from the latest Chanel couture collection. Karl Lagerfeld, the absolute darling of the fashion world, presented his Spring 2000 collection in Paris – a spectacular affair with models swirling about the catwalk in gorgeous, twirly gowns that wouldn’t have looked out of place in Swan Lake. This sparked a whole trend. I mean, when Karl Lagerfeld blesses a look, it's going to be *the* look, isn't it?

From the chic boutiques of Knightsbridge to the back streets of Brick Lane, everyone seems to be caught in a whirlwind of tulle. Imagine my surprise yesterday when I was lunching at my favourite cafe in Kensington – and spotted the cashier in a gorgeous, pink tutu! It's enough to make your head spin. Even my dear mother, a woman who still insists on wearing her old hat and gloves, was seen this morning in the local shops sporting a bright red tutu under her classic Burberry trench coat – well, the one that’s not *too* vintage, you know the one! Honestly, who'd have thought that this dainty garment could have such universal appeal?

But here's the thing: it's not just the *look* of the tutu, my dears. It’s the *attitude* it brings with it. Everyone suddenly seems to have a touch of *je ne sais quoi* in their stride, their smiles, even their order in the bakery. The man serving croissants was *definitely* channeling a *Swan Lake* prince, if you ask me.

Some say this tutu-mania is just another passing fad, but I have a feeling that it's here to stay – or at least until the next big trend comes along. And I’ll tell you what, I for one am not complaining. As long as they can keep the style sophisticated – with a touch of classicism – I’ll gladly join in on the twirling, the spinning and the oh-so-elegant ballet. It’s just delightful! Now if you’ll excuse me, my dear readers, I must go. My hairdresser has just booked me an appointment to have my hair styled into an up-do – because let’s face it: it’s just not proper tutu-wear to have your hair just hanging down. It’s *so* last year! And be sure to check out your favourite boutiques; rumour has it there's a fabulous new collection of tutus hitting the shops this month. Get yours before it’s too late!

Top 5 Tutu Tips from Your Fashion Queen:

  • Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize: Tutus are *so* versatile. Just like my handbag, a girl needs lots of shoes and accessories to perfectly style a tutu!
  • Length Matters: Be careful with the length. Just because it's fashionable to wear tutus now doesn’t mean they look good on everyone. You need to find a tutu that flatters your body shape.
  • Less is More: And with the make-up – please keep it classic! Just a touch of rouge and lipstick will give that beautiful, delicate, ‘ballet' glow.
  • Choose your colour carefully: Now's not the time to experiment! Stick with classic black and white or go for a softer, more muted tone.
  • Don't forget the music: It’s just not right to go twirling in a tutu without a little music in the air!

Until next time, my dears. Be fabulous, be fun, and definitely be stylish!
