Tutu and Ballet News

Dearest darlings, I'm absolutely thrilled to be back with you today, fresh from a rather decadent afternoon at the Royal Opera House, where I, your beloved, ever-stylish guide to all things twirly and divine, witnessed a sight that has left me speechless - and in need of a new vocabulary. For you see, dear readers, today was the day of the Tutus. The Great Tutus. Yes, I know, you're thinking "Darling, what on earth is she talking about?," and you'd be forgiven, for this, my pet, was a sight to behold!

It seems the world of ballet is buzzing about these wondrous tutus. They weren't just your standard poofy affairs, oh no. These were, how can I say this delicately, 'enhanced'. One, a daring vision of shocking pink tulle with glittering silver sequined accents, felt positively 'Sex and the City' (except in a Covent Garden setting). Another, a vibrant sapphire blue number, was crafted of so much material, it surely took at least a dozen seamstresses to hoist it on stage! This one was accompanied by a little silver tiara that, frankly, could only be described as 'extra'.

Of course, the highlight of the show, if I can even call it that, came during the final "Grand Pas de Deux," which was quite frankly, chaotic, what with the 'enhanced' tutus being an absolute distraction. We're not talking 'slightly embellished', darling, we're talking "so much volume you'd need a small crane to hoist a dancer."

Imagine, the dancer took a turn and suddenly, poof, a wave of iridescent blue material engulfs the stage. It's as if she had tripped into a fairy godmother's surplus fabric store. The dancers were clearly struggling with these behemoth creations; pirouettes looked like they were being executed under protest. It was pure entertainment, my dears, pure and glorious entertainment! Let me just say, this show, these tutus, this 'performance', made for quite the spectacle. It was so bizarre and utterly fascinating that it truly, I kid you not, surpassed the "Swan Lake" incident last year. I mean, do you remember that?

  • A ballerina forgot her pointe shoes in the dressing room (honestly!)
  • The lead dancer got stuck in the middle of the "Black Swan" pas de deux
  • And they had to have a mid-performance fashion show with backstage staff who all looked quite stressed (but stylish, mind you!)

I can't lie, I left the theatre positively invigorated and feeling so fabulously alive! These 'enhanced' tutus made me remember the simple joy of ... well ... joy! We often get caught up in the "perfection" of ballet, which is great and all, but don't we all just need a little bit of "out-of-the-box" thinking in our lives, sometimes?

So, my dear friends, go forth and enjoy a "Tutu Moment," if you will. Try something slightly more, well, flamboyant, with a dash of "over-the-top". Perhaps that flamboyant hat you've been coveting in the back of your wardrobe or a pair of outrageously patterned tights. You deserve a "Tutu Moment" - the more unconventional, the better. It's what makes life so incredibly fun!

Till next time, darling, enjoy your dose of the divine! And keep twirling.
