Tutu and Ballet News

Darling, can you believe it's already February? Where does the time go? Honestly, I swear, every day I wake up and think, "This is the year I'm going to conquer my messy top drawer," and then bam! I'm already planning next year's holiday. Oh well, as my beloved Granny always said, "Life's too short to let your wardrobe collect dust!"

Speaking of collecting dust, have you seen those awful tutus? I'm talking about the ones that are so old they look like they've been living under a grandma's bed for decades. Honestly, it's a sartorial tragedy! Those things have more holes than a sieve! I mean, I'm all for a bit of vintage glamour, but let's be real, there's vintage and then there's just plain vintage. A tutu should be like a good bottle of wine, aged beautifully and bursting with character. It shouldn't resemble something unearthed from an antique shop.

And what's with the fabric? Stiff as a board! These tutus aren't designed to twirl. I'm convinced they're more for displaying in a dusty antique shop, you know, next to the dusty, faded gramophones and chipped porcelain dolls.

So, dear reader, I felt compelled to act. I simply couldn't let the tragedy continue. What is the point of a tutu if it can't twirl, I ask? So I took matters into my own elegant hands. This past Sunday, in my fabulous flat, nestled amongst the cushions, I gathered my dearest friends – some fabulously talented dancers, all, obviously, wearing fabulously gorgeous tutus. I decided we were going to stage a very specific form of “Tutu Revival,” a dance for the ages. My idea? We would breathe new life into the “dusty vintage” tutus and prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that even the most unfortunate fashion statement can become something elegant.

Honestly, I am bursting with pride! Not only was it a total triumph in the realm of fashion, but it also brought back memories from my ballet days at the Royal Academy, which – as you know – I totally rock. My little sister, Chloe, who’s the complete opposite of my refined nature – always been more of a free spirit – thought the idea of wearing those tutus was hilarious. And darling, it was. When we started, I had my own mini fashion show. I was all like “this tutu will never twirl!” but as we kept spinning around and getting used to them, it was like magic. Each spin made the tutu become softer. I can honestly say, that by the time we reached the final dance pose – which I totally invented, because of course I did! – my sister’s original expression had changed completely. I just knew we were onto something special.

Chloe, now wearing the dusty tutu that looked as if it came straight out of her Granny’s dusty bedroom (a place where her granny doesn’t even go anymore), came up to me. She’s usually really blunt and just laughs at everything I do, so the change in her tone was so unusual! "Okay,” she whispered, “you might have a point about this vintage, because this is actually kind of fun!” And I totally swooned, of course, because my beloved younger sister was the most vocal critic in our family. She even, dare I say, used a slightly “artsy-fartsy” word - the whole scene was surreal. I couldn’t help myself, I just had to go over to the piano, pull a very fabulous sequined scarf around my neck and just play one of my very favourite Chopin pieces – my grandmother taught me Chopin before she passed – and even then Chloe didn’t stop smiling. Now tell me darling, is that not divine intervention?

Chloe even ended up wearing that ridiculous thing for the rest of the afternoon. She’s actually very good at ballet, we just haven’t had the chance to see her full potential, it was as if a dam of self-confidence had finally burst. And who can resist a little Chopin while swirling about? At one point, she was literally doing the “grand jeté” - the ballerina pose where she is soaring through the air like an angel! The dusty, stiff fabric was even helping to make the entire thing so impressive! I almost took out my phone, but then again, darling, how rude to do so!

But you know, even with all of the good times we were having – especially after my divine, very impromptu Chopin performance, - this event really did highlight an important message about what happens when we put aside the opinions of others, embrace a bit of “new-age vintage” - oh my god, I love how the mind works! - and use them in new, creative ways! This was about showing everyone that sometimes, you just have to embrace the flaws, dust off that vintage beauty and let it shine!

By the time we had finished, there was not a single, dusty old tutu in sight. We had taken each piece, transformed it from dust bunnies into things of sheer brilliance – or at least a few of them, - and with that, my dear reader, the tutu revival was officially underway! So, take my advice: don't let your wardrobe get you down! Get creative, throw on that “dusty vintage” and remember, sometimes, a good old-fashioned “Tutu Revival” is the perfect way to find your inner ballerina.
