Tutu and Ballet News

Well darlings, the year 2000 has brought us so much, the dawn of a new millennium, Y2K fears that thankfully didn't come to fruition, and
the utter bonkers spectacle that is the Tutu-Rama fashion craze sweeping the nation! It’s the latest fashion trend that’s leaving the fashion world utterly flummoxed, yet undeniably intrigued. Forget about your skinny jeans and crop tops, because this season, it's all about the tutu, darlings!

You see, last week, some cheeky chappies from Oxford decided to “deconstruct” the concept of ballet for a good laugh and what they’ve accidentally unleashed upon us, dear readers, is fashion mayhem. It started at a rather splendid, albeit slightly outlandish, gathering at a rather exclusive college common room with a rather elaborate costume ball. The “Tutu-Rama” started in this delightful hotchpotch of Oxford dons and undergrads. Instead of wearing just, you know, your usual gown, the fellows went full blown ‘swan lake’ – or well, perhaps ‘Swan Lake’ as styled by Vivienne Westwood! And the fun was had by all – particularly the good old lads – it really got those brains a-flutter!

From this singular, slightly drunken, college prank came a whirlwind of tutu madness and it's not just Oxford lads doing a pirouette into fashion – It's EVERYONE darling! We've spotted your local supermarket cashier sporting a pink, poofy one as her new uniform, that old boy next door doing his gardening in a rather fetching navy blue version with knee high boots, and I swear, I saw our Prime Minister's wife attempting a *jetĂ©* at the opening of a new library whilst wearing a canary yellow tutu – well she might as well have just been doing an *arabesque* for all the attention it attracted! I mean darling, if the Prime Minister's wife isn't scared of wearing one at a public event, who is?!

Don't get me wrong, my dear readers, I'm not hating. I absolutely love a good dose of tutus – especially ones made from fluffy, airy tulle that looks so pretty! I am a girl who grew up taking dance lessons so let’s be real; a little ballet, a little glitz, a little something-something, makes for some absolutely fabulous fashion fun. The *pas de deux* has entered the realm of fashion! Who would have thought it! I mean who would have thought that this simple little ballet dress - and lets be real - not that complicated at all really, would set off such a fashion hurricane?! But darling, it's certainly not a bad one at all, so embrace it and let's spin ourselves silly with this utterly outrageous fashion moment.

And how does one embrace this Tutu-Rama craze, you may ask? Simple, darling! We start at the beginning and what's more classic than the tried-and-true *tutu* itself?! And yes, by 'classic,' I mean those impossibly short, puffy affairs that have us all yearning to channel our inner ballerina, a ballet dancer if you will. We're talking full length, poufy, bouncy, floaty tutus here. If they were used for dancing, it wouldn't be that practical but the ones I've been seeing, have really been made for style! You need a fluffy, oversized, tutu-esque kind of dream to fully appreciate it and then make it your own. The trick, of course, is to get one that makes you feel absolutely fabulous. If you've got the legs for it, darling, don't shy away from a *demi-tutu* – those super short ones will get everyone doing a *double take*!

To fully embrace Tutu-Rama, try these things:
  • Wear your tutu with confidence! I mean let’s face it darling - you’ve got the legs, flaunt them - and let everyone else admire the fabulous tutu you’ve chosen!
  • Add your own flair – maybe you’re into wearing it over jeans with your favourite t-shirt, perhaps with an elaborate lace shawl, or even better, an elaborate vintage coat? If you like pairing it up with some heels or even sneakers - whatever rocks your boat – just go for it! I think the idea here is that anything goes, my darlings! It’s up to you! Just don’t forget a fabulously elegant hairstyle! Don’t forget!
  • Take inspiration from your favourite ballet dancer – do you fancy something a bit more traditional like *Giselle*’s long ethereal tutus? Want to try an Edwardian *tutu*? Perhaps something with ‘en pointe’ shoes? If the traditional looks don’t rock your boat - then do a little mix-and-match. Don’t be scared darling! It’s *all* about personal style. Make this craze *your own!*
  • Add a dash of sparkle! Go on, make it shine and glam! The sparkle and shine doesn’t hurt – after all this is about unleashing your inner ballerina – a bit of glamour goes a long way in making that statement! I’d suggest adding your favorite dazzling necklace or a brooch, maybe a little something that reflects the light when you spin! Don’t be afraid to mix in a little bling - but always keep it chic and understated. Don’t go over-the-top - you can’t go too over-the-top in the world of tutus though can you darling? I'd think!
  • Go bold or go home! This really is the most important rule for you darlings, and one I believe in most definitely. There is absolutely no place for shyness in this realm. After all, tutus are made to get you noticed! So embrace this bonkers craze - own it - let it make you *swoon*.

Remember, this craze, dear readers, is all about unleashing your inner ballerina. Have fun with it, express your style and don't be afraid to go bold. Now darling, just get out there, grab your tutu, and spin the night away!
