Tutu and Ballet News

Oh darling, can you believe it's 20 November already? The year seems to be flitting by like a butterfly in a whirlwind! But you know what hasn't gone anywhere? The tutu! That magnificent piece of theatrical tulle has been delighting our eyes and, frankly, baffling our brains for centuries. And today, dear reader, we're going to delve into the world of tutus. Buckle up, it's going to be a giggle!

Now, we all know a tutu when we see one, but how much do we *really* know about them? Firstly, there's that word - tutu. Sounds like something a baby might say when they're trying to say 'boo boo' doesn't it? But there it is, enshrined in the theatrical lexicon for all time. There's no changing it. The word, that is.

And then, of course, there's the tutu itself. A cloud of fluff, a billowing dream in the world of dance. Think about it - this enormous fluffy structure is being held up by tiny little ballerinas, their delicate ankles miraculously supporting a piece of fabric bigger than the set itself sometimes. Let's be honest, darling, it's a bit bonkers isn't it?

There's a whole spectrum of tutus too, from the delicate 'Romantic tutu', which makes it look like the dancer is barely clothed in layers of the finest gossamer, to the 'classical tutu', which basically screams 'I am a dancing Christmas tree and I'm not afraid to show it!' I just have one question about the classical tutu - how does one sit down gracefully in one of those things without collapsing in a heap on the floor?

Then, of course, we can't forget about the *other* important role the tutu plays in our lives: Fashion. Oh, my dear reader, I just can't even with the tutu and its endless fascination for the fashion world! For spring-summer 2000, the tutu, in all its variations, has been seen on everything from couture gowns to, prepare yourself, high street frocks!

There was that amazing red satin tutu in a **high-street shop in London** this year that caused absolute chaos among my group of friends, which, as you know, darling, isn't easy to achieve with women who've seen a bit of everything, so that just shows you what the power of the tutu is really like. And you know what's next? Yes! We are going to see tutus as everything from jackets and bags, darling, to shoes! The tutus are just going to keep on coming. Just you wait, this isn't over, not even a tiny bit.

So, the next time you're out and about and you see a tutu, dear reader, don't just think, 'Oh, how pretty.' Think 'That piece of fluff is a cultural phenomenon, and I should be thankful to see it in all its glory!' I don't know about you darling, but that just about makes me want to skip off into the sunset, wearing nothing but a giant, glorious, pink tutu and a smile wider than the Thames.
